i love how you guys were able to take the big, philosophical messages of the movie and tie them into how people treat each other in everyday life. the way that you understood each character's motivations showed a lot of compassion. that's the kind of thing we need more of when we discuss movies, but also, that's the kind of thing we need more of when we talk to other human beings. good shit, guys!

03:36 Yes! It's called code-switching, when you use different languages or dialects interchangeably in a conversation. Some of us does this on a daily basis.

Pretty standard for first generation folks and their families. Chinese families like this refer to it as "chinglish".

The movie's budget was only $25 million at most. It's less than one episode of Game of Thrones. They pulled together the perfect team on a shoestring budget!

The costume design for this movie was absolutely AMAZING! Glad you liked that we brought it up!

@@camandzay whenever people react to costume designs, it’s always “oh that’s pretty” or something that’s already in the text, and never a full understanding of the design itself. So I absolutely loved that you guys did what you did.

One thing I missed on my first viewing was a key visual story telling aspect; that Waymond's "joy' and existentialism of the Googly Eyes are the black and white inverse of Jobu's hopelessness and nihilism of the Everything Bagel. It is their ying/yang. Embracing the Googly Eyes at the end was the acceptance of the different viewpoint and choosing to fight for herself, for her daughter, and her family. Also, the circle motif throughout, including the bagel and googly eyes, is symbol of the heavens and harmony in Chinese culture. It is the most important shape alongside the square (representing earth, amongst other things).

Daniel Scheinert stated that writing where the parents are the protagonist and the child is the antagonist is exciting. Most films depict the parents as old fashion or not up to date with the world's current situations and always hold the child back from achieving their full potential. So EEAAO flipped on that narrative.

This is the best movie I've ever seen. It lures you in with the comedy and action and style, but drops deep thoughts, penetrating emotion and dueling philosophies on you all at once. It's a transformational experience masquerading as a movie. It's an experience about healing

It was amazing in every way that I needed. I don't think I've laughed and cried and cheered so much at a movie by myself in the movie theater in my entire life. I will be going back to watch the extended version when it drops on the 29th

Great reaction. I look forward to watching your other reactions. I love how people get different things from it. I thought it was a metaphor for poor families who are dealing with a child with depression, and no matter the different things they try, the depressed child is still suicidal. The language switching is common. I have witnessed what at used to be called "Spanglish" where people switched back and forth between Spanish and English. The family in the movie is trilingual: Cantonese and Mandarin (which share the Chinese writing system but pronounce the characters differently) and English. And if Becky is half Mexican, it is possible Joy is learning some Spanish as well.
