That was one of the reasons why Xena was such a great show: It wasn't just about Xena's quest for redemption. It was also about Gabrielle's transformation from a naive young woman to bard to warrior. She's there to keep Xena on the straight path. It's Gabrielle's journey into adulthood.

I remember how sobering it was when Gabrielle would go full-on fighter and kill- it just wasn't her character, but she got good at fighting. As the show wound to an end, it seems that Gabby turns out to be the greater warrior of the two. You could say that the show was about Xena; or that it was the first time that a sidekick was really the hero and the greater of the two. Too bad Rob Tapert didn't see the value of this show, or how long it could last in our culture: he sold the Rights to Universal so that he could make two ridiculous eye candy comedy-adventures which didn't last 2 seasons. Xena is a classic because of the story and the two unknowns who stepped into the roles with a great understanding of the characters.

She's helping people overcome invaders, slavers, and all kinds of bad people but it's not in atonement for her guilty conscience and evil that she once committed. It's because she believes in helping them and has made herself able.

Actually the series ended because Lucy was really burned out and needed a rest. There were plans to do some follow on TV movies later but those plans unfortunately didn't happen due to changes of management at Universal.

One of the greatest feminist shows in history... great acting, great scripts and fantastic action. It is a wonder it never won an Emmy. In fact, it makes Game of Thrones seem positively amateurish and mere drivel. Bravo for quality television and what a gamechanger... for my life anyways.
