Alien: Covenant didn't get the best reception, but I think it's been picked apart a lot more than it deserves, just like Prometheus... Be honest, do you always remember your space suit on alien planets? Here's everything right with Alien Covenant.

I really liked actually seeing the xeno's in the light for once. We've seen like 10 movies where they're in the shadows, and it works great, but im super happy Scott threw us a bone and was like 'here ya go kids!" for me it ramps the fear factor up a bit higher as you see them movie like a cross between a spider and a human. i thing that alien do not need oxygen and since i am not satisfied with movies and where are they going let assume that some fans movies fix in the future what fox made bad about alien origin and so on. because it do not give a sense nothing just some sort of genetic things when you expect that biomechanoid just do not pop out after 10 years of some experiments even more new born looks like fully grown miniature of adult when giger clearly designed it like worm due to disgust from worm parasites venturing under your skin and by far aesthetic of the movie is just reflection of old alien and its really feel it due to lack of giger presents. well there in first movie work together one of the most genius brains of that decade and surrealism (psychological reflection in art) and Freud psychology from sixties had very strong influence on cinema. why this is important? well it is, because if you do not have corner stone like Ridley do not have it now, you can not make psychological movie and you put there such a ideas relevant today, like danger of ai. let say that Ridley did it first and really want to create some sort of horror of that danger but it do not have the same dark corners of unconsciousness and all that mysteries. idea is interesting but far less developed then that one before and literally less potent in case of horror. just dark future of terminator and matrix did a lot of exploration in this philosophical matter. alien should forever stayed surreal, freudian and lowecraftian. not religious, mythological and danikenian

Zuu Kuu this is how i think of Ridley from Metroid (being BASED on the Xenos). i know that the only time we see him actually do that is in Prime 1 as a cyborg, but maybe he can even when he's 100% organic. also your picture's a cutie.

Actually, after thinking some more... it wasn't established outright that they dont need oxygen, all together. Think it just seemed that way because the alien was robust enough to survive outside of the ship for a time but realistically it wasn't out there that long... I guess that kind of makes people (including myself) assume however, there's no reason the alien couldn't have adapted to only need a breath once every few hours, just like a crocodile.

Physical monster vs a soulless monster. Does David understand morality, does he have empathy? It's hard to say, its a good question. It involves the question of whether you can grow beyond what you were “made” to be, and what is considered truly “bad” (by human definition). David was made to serve humans, but chooses to grow beyond that to serve what he considers to be a greater purpose. Xenos, according to this film, were created to be the perfect organsim and essentially stay the perfect organism. Is it worse to be something that only knows violence and has no capability or motivation to grow beyond it, or something that has the ability to choose and chose to do what it thinks is right (despite whatever suffering that choice causes)?

I rewatched Covenant the other day (it was on TV) and had a thought, consider this: The first Engineer David meets (in Prometheus) rips his head off within minutes, with no explanation. So, when he's approaching a whole planet full of them, is it really that surprising that he decides to wipe them out? He's already shown that he's willing to murder humans (Holloway, with the black goo) who he owes his entire existence to. It's actually 'logical' that his self preservation would kick in, considering that from his point of view he owes the Engineers nothing and they are 'in his way'.

Personally, I would have respected the movie a lot more if they kept to their original plan for the prometheus sequels. Similarly to how I feel about the sequel trilogy of Star Wars. I really did not like Prometheus and I hated most of The last Jedi, but I would have respected their sequels a lot more had they stuck to their original idea rather than caving in to the haters and pandering to angry fans who won't like it either way. As it stands, Covenant is not a good movie, and more important for my argument, it's not a movie I can respect because it's obvious the plot was changed because of the haters.

David didn't create *the* Xenomorph. He *RE*created it, within his means, ie. not an exactly identical species compared to the "real" Xenomorphs. The reasons: - The ancient Engineer ruins from Prometheus feature prominent Xenomorph murals in the in-universe year 2093 - The Space Jockey ship was carrying Xenomorph eggs, which had been there for most likely hundreds of years. David created the Protomorph in the in-universe year 2104. The Space Jockey was discovered in the in-universe year 2122, just 18 years after Alien Covenant. So even if somehow the Space Jockey from Alien was carrying eggs created by David, the timelines don't match - the Engineer murals were discovered in 2093. 11 years before David created the egg in Covenant.

I will never say that those who didn't like this film don't have valid complaints, but I find that most of those negative reviews are based on the viewer's personal expectations for the movie and the franchise as a whole. I think this is easily the best of the series since Aliens. Really, the only flaw I can find is that the alien's life cycle seems drastically accelerated so as to bring the Xenomorph into the scene in time to menace the remaining characters. I love the David/Walter dynamic and that scene of aliens attacking people in a field, at night, lit by firelight...god, that was awesome. I hope Scott gets to finish this trilogy.
@HalcyonSkies
@HalcyonSkies 3 жыл бұрын
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks There are a lot more problems than just that. Before I go on though let me preface, I'm not looking to start an argument, and if you like this film that is great. So, you have a huge cast of characters in this film, which doesn't allow us to get invested in them at all. You know they're all basically just fodder. The first Alien had a tight cast, and we got to know them at least a bit before they died. Plus, everyone in here all seem to act like morons. Even in a breathable atmosphere, you don't go out into an alien environment without some kind of protection, since you have no idea what pathogens could be lurking. We knew this when the movie came out, hell we even vaccinate people on our own planet when they just cross the ocean, but they don't even bother here. One guy even puts his face down to a plant-thing that obviously shot something out of itself. Also the fact that no one really questions David on his story, he leads them through a forest of Engineer corpses, and even after the one guy has explicit proof that he's up to no good, he still takes David at his word and goes right up to an alien egg and puts his FACE near it, rather than shooting David when he had the chance. There is just a host of issues with the film, in my opinion.

You're free to enjoy this film, no problem. You're not suddenly a bad or dumb person if you do. I can certainly see this film's charms, but I personally don't like it for the same reason I don't like most Alien films, or horror films in general: I am really, _really_ tired of people being made inconceivably stupid in order to drive a plot. I would love for a film to have a story based around intelligent, competent people being unable to deal with a challenge despite how good they are at what they do. The idea that this Alien creature is 'perfect' is made so cheap by the fact that the main reason it succeeds is because you couldn't find humans that were somehow more incapable of performing the task they were told to do, even if you tried. Such things annoy me, but not so much that I couldn't look past that and see how this film could be very enjoyable. The acting is great, the score fantastic, tension building, visuals, set dressing, everything. The whole thing has been thought out perfectly into the minutest of details, but somehow these big, glaring problems with writing are completely missed. It just feels so weird to think that nobody throughout the production of this film raised the question "why would these people do this?" Were they too scared to call anyone out on their shit because they were the writer or director and therefore much more important than them?

The problem with the sensors and them not wearing a helmet is that they decide that the air is fine simply because it has oxygen in it. All throughout the movie we’ve seen Walter show basically no emotion so that’s another way you could’ve seen the Walter/David thing going. In the Extras of the DVD you can watch a portion where the whole crew goes through “fear trials” more or less, and Walter again shows no fear. So that flinch really stood out to me. I honestly can't think of another director that creates such dreadfully beautiful landscape shots. Especially from space down to a planet. Something about the way he composes the shots and designs the worlds, they are beautiful, stark, terrifying, mysterious, draw you in, all at once.

What I understand and appreciate is how they aren’t trying to recreate the magic that was the tension in the first _Alien_ movie. You can’t top that within the same franchise and you can’t just copy it. It’s nice that they’re using the opportunity to expand on the lore, presenting the Xenomorphs in a different way (really demonstrating the speed and power outside of a glimpse and a cut to a different shot away from the action), as well as telling a wider variety of stories and using the Xenomorphs as something that connects to the original franchise as well as easing the audience into the new one

It's a small detail, but originality, Shaw's transmission that the crew picks up was supposed to be a prayer, as a form of cry for help/distress signal, but some people involved felt that was a bit 'hokey'/melodramatic and etc, so they last minute switched it to the pop song serving the same purpose, which feels like it was probably the right decision, all things considered

@@tomgamble3875 Mostly shouldn't care. If you're making a movie about pregnancy, i think it should matter what gender the protagonist is. Roger Ogue, yeah there are defiantly some cases where it does matter, but I don’t understand why Disney is just pushing for Female justice? Where are the overweight Jedi? There is representation, also they are basically saying that you are what your skin colour is, to are what your genitalia are etc, which goes against every ‘Disney’ movie ever, ‘it doesn’t matter what you look like, it’s who you are that matters!’ And that mass message applies to everybody, not just half the population. Roger Ogue to a point yes but even the movie “a quiet place” has a male protagonist in a story centered on pregnancy. i think gender and race shouldnt be restricting factors in a cohesive story. the emotional story for the female lead in this movie works better from a female pov than from a male and as a male, seeing a relationship from another pov wasnt distracting in the slightest, and hopefully future movies understand that a good female lead can offer men insight into how females would “ideally” operate in the same situation as an “ideal” male or any variation if that makes sense

I find your theory about David very interessing, specially considering "Prometheus" in greek mithology, or Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (the sub-title of the book is "The Modern Prometheus"); Prometheus in Mithology is punished because he gave humans (that kinda are Prometheus creation) fire and is punished by Zeus, his creator. The "Monster" on Frankenstein is set a part of the World by his creator, and turn on him because of the isolation, even though they share a lot of similarities;

While I did miss the Prometheus feel and hated how Shaw was handled, it still felt new despite using some of the usual cliche suspects. Fassbender by far is the saving grace of this new set of films for the series and his Data/Lore performance as both David and Walter in Covenant really had me invested all the way through. And thank you for making this video. I feel all icky for cheering David on, I don't know why I find him so compelling. And the fact the Fassy played two droids who have the same flaw for a certain kind of women is just mind boggling. you know it's not Walter, at the end, but when he sighs when he sees Daniels is okay just makes your heart clinch. It also shows how dismissive the humans were of Walter. If they had been paying attention, they would have noticed that David isn't as attentive to the humans needs, he had to be told to grab the face patch. He was slow in replying to questions about the alien. But yeah, good movie. I spent the entire weekend binge watching the series.

Great video. I like how you suggest Covenant is David's story and that the Prometheus theme heard in Covenant is diegetic. It makes me recall Frankenstein being a framed narrative, one that makes sense more and more towards the end, examined in reverse through the final frame in the narrative, the creature, itself. In Covenant, David is the modern day equivalent to Shelley's creature, and by the third film, or so on, who knows how viewing that sequel will change how we look back on, and view, Prometheus? Great stuff, guys!

YeOldSloth This is why I ignore the reviews and comments, all anyone has to say about movies is how bad they are. Nobody watches movies for entertainment anymore, they watch them to hate on them. While there were a couple of things I weren't fond of in this movie in terms of the writing (all in the second half of the movie) I can say without a doubt that I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and the gore in it is exceptionally rad. I would be totally ok with giving this movie a second viewing and would be equally entertained. Now heres what I didn't like: (Spoilers) Besides Excorcist imagery being a weak spot for me in Horrors I was not cool with the way they handled Walter's fake out death. A sudden stab to the neck and his eyes immediately rolled to the back of his head and his body siezed up. His death was an "in your face you blink you miss it" jumpscare death but that's not the problem, the problem is that he just strolled up 10 minutes later to fight David. That sudden jumpscare should totally have been a proper death. They should have saved that death for someone else and had them stay dead. I must add that this 10 minutes is almost exactly the same as Iron Man. Tony stark gets paralyzed by Obadiah with a tazer and sometime later manages to get into his MkIII suit and fight Obadiah soon after. I love how freakish that two seconds is between David and Walter but if he was alive it didn't need to be so unnecessarily grotesque and should have been spent on someone else. Another thing was how the final alien kill was done. The way Daniels just hopped out of the hangar to make way for the bulldozer was just weird. How did she descend? How did she keep herself perfectly still and not get hit by the bulldozer. IMO it would have been better if instead of having the alien get impaled by the second bulldozer they should've had Daniels sacrifice herself at the end. The first bulldozer knocks the alien out of the hangar, but it climbs over the bulldozer and leaps througj space back towards the Covenant. Daniels will not allow the Xenomorph to harm any more of the ship's occupants and after a running headstart, dives out of the hangar and tackles the alien into the planet's orbit where they both burn up in the atmosphere. Other than those two things, like I said I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and would watch it a second time.

David was a lot like its creator Weyland. They are both brilliant visionaries, arrogant, proud, manipulative, and both think they can make a perfect being, Weyland with the androids and David with the aliens. The major problem with this movie is that Ridley (genius that he is) put to much philosophy and not enough common sense in the movie.

The studio Fox and the fandom pretty much forced his hand on this one. Ridley didn't originally want to make this movie this way, but he had to bring back Xenomorphs, so he had to rush things out to make that happen, rather than what he actually wanted to happen.

James Bell Except we pretty much already understood it long before Prometheus. It was pretty much like an insect. And the idea was that there are or were others like it, such as the Albino, which was used as a concept for the Neomorph. Though I guess you're one of those who hate the entire Alien franchise except the first movie. In this case I can somewhat agree, because Aliens has made the individual Alien less special and less threatening. I've found an entire article dedicated to how Aliens pretty much cut the balls off the Alien. It's why I appreciate Alien Isolation so much. However, it is still and always will be an Alien. It is not man made, nor was it ever. David only had a hand in creating it through experiments. But the alien substance for that creation came from other aliens. You having an issue with the concept of exploring the Alien's origin is not an issue with the film or the concept. It's YOUR issue. The solution: Never watch another Alien movie ever again.
@nexusshark

James Bell No, you're just happy to watch an Alien movie that you agree with so that you can call it "well written" and "well-directed". *Having them be insects isn’t defining them so much as allowing for more unique ideas to be in place (eg queen/hive mind). It simply uses that information as a basis for a different story.* So you're fine with them no longer being as Alien as they used to be in the original movie. I can use that same logic on Covenant and future films. Not exploring the derelict ship or the space jockey is not exactly something that every fan will appreciate. Sure, Aliens went into a different direction, but that doesn't mean that the questions that are left open should never be answered. Some fans would like to know. I also don't see how Alien is now trying to cash in to Marvel's formula of success. I can see DC doing this, but it's not like Alien didn't have an expanded universe long before Marvel did the thing. It even crossed over to the Predator universe and eventhough the more recent movies tried to seperate the two franchises again, it hasn't stopped other fans and writers to tie these two back together. *I don’t want to see an origin story about the treasure Indian jones is hunting because it’s used as a way to springboard a plot.* Then it's a good thing that nobody is forcing you to if such a movie is ever made. I don't see how knowing what the Xeno is distracts from the horror in any way. It's not like it becomes any less deadly or any less scary in the dark. Seriously, in what way do humans understand the Xenomorph better than they already did in the previous films? The only thing new that we have is that it is a product from an alien black goo made by other aliens. And we know for a fact that others like the Xenomorph have previously existed long before David was even an idea. And what do we know about the black goo and the engineer's? Not much. We also only got glimpses. *I’m fine with Prometheus being about all of that because it’s not really an alien movie. The worst part of the movie is when a xenomorph pops out at the end for no reason.* That was not a Xenomorph. That was a Deacon. Also one of many products created by the Black Goo. It also looks like the picture we see in the big head room. The "god" that the Engineers worship. The creatures produced by the black goo all share similar features. The reason for that scene was to show the result of the Trilobite's Tentacle Hentai on the Engineer and to show a glimpse of other horror's produced by the Black Goo that might come in the future. It doesn't always have to be about Xeno's. As you noted in your previous response, Scott was preassured to make this more like an Alien movie by Fox Studios and the fandom. They wanted an Alien movie, they got it. I don't think Covenant would have turned out like this if Scott wasn't forced to please a certain group of biased fanboys who only wanted to see their precious Xenomorph's. Me personally, I would've been fine if the movie would've focussed on the Neomorph's. And I think that's what Scott originally wanted for this movie. It wasn't meant to be a Xenomorph movie. The Xeno was simply shoehorned in to please the fanboys and the studio. I hope they're happy. I've seen enough Xenomorph's and I'm much more interested in other creatures, including the Engineer's. Reading the interviews it is obvious that Scott originally wanted to make quite a different sequel for Prometheus. He also wanted to make quite a different sequel to Alien back in the 80's. Also, Deadpool is part of the X-Men universe. It ackowledges the flaws with the different timelines and inconsistency, but it is canonically part of the same X-Men universe. Like you pointed out, Prometheus is not a Xenomorph movie. It only shares continuity with the Xeno movies. Some people also say that Blade Runner takes place in that same continuity aswell. I've yet to see any rule book that states that different movies sharing the same continuity must not deal with different themes.

Scott just made an alien movie to mess up with Neil Blomkamp's take on Alien. Like a "don't touch my stuff!" kinda attitude.

The scene with the 2 Michael Fassbenders playing the flute really felt like a whole lot of showing off to me... and I'm perfectly okay with that. They used every technique brilliantly and showed how far technology has come

I’ll never get over how Scott caved for this film. Prometheus was a work of art that’s themes and characters deserved exploring. But the way the Xeno was shoehorned into this movie and previous things from Prometheus were dropped to make way for it and retreading the same old action set pieces.. breaks my heart man. Could have been something special.

Am I the only one who thinks that Ridley Scott is silently laughing with us during the xenomorph egg sequence. David's lines seem to be making a knowing wink to the audience who, for the most part, knows what happens when a human gets near an egg.

I was reminded of a joke about a man walking in the countryside. He finds himself crossing a field that has a bull in it. He sees a farmer leaning over a fence and calls to him "Is that bull safe?" The farmer replied, "Aye, the bull's safe... can't say the same for you though."

Ive said it before and i say it again, Cinemawins is my favorite channel, so many movies iv'e seen that i liked and then i see the reviews bashing them and i start to question my taste in films, and then the warm fuzzy feeling i get when i discover that i'm not alone in liking something that the majority think i should hate.
