Being portuguese myself, that Lisbon earthquake section blew my mind. Of ocurse, it's always something that we learned in history books - how the great earthquake of November 1st 1755, followed by a tsunami, ravaged downtown Lisbon completely, causing the estimated deaths to be at around 10 000 to 100 000 (relative to the source you read) - but actually seeing it first hand? The screaming, the perfect use of Portuguese to convey the fear and horror of the scene. I didn't know this event would be portrayed in an AC game, and when I saw the date, my heart sank immediately. Because again, every portuguese citizen knows about this earthquake! And it's the perfect catalyst for Shay. Like you so brilliantly said in your video, it's the one drop too many that tips the scale. His resolve was already wavering, but after that? His heart was set. Like you said, I love that Rogue isn't black and white. But honestly? I feel like the Assassins will never be as great as back when they were under Ezio's leadership. Many mentors tried, but none ever quite succeeded. And the Colonial Brotherhood was just alllll the way messed up. Seriously, Achilles speaks like a typical templar villain in so many moments. If Altaïr showed us what the Brotherhood could be, and if Ezio showed us what the Brotherhood should be, then Shay showed us what the Brotherhood looks like when it falls in incapable hands. Achilles was too proud to be the Mentor this brotherhood needed. And even after he's defeated, he still brainwashes Connor into killing his own father. Sure, Connor was dead set on killing Lee, but Achilles redirects that anger towards Haytham, making Connor believe that Lee only acted under Haytham's orders, when it was not the case. And Connor only realizes his mistake much too late, when he reads his dead father's journal. He's too late to admit that he was wrong, and Haytham was right. Achilles poisoned the Brotherhood, and Connor, and only with his death did Connor show the resolve to rebuild a better Brotherhood through his perseverence.

@@ahmedsachwani2868 Uh... AC 1 = The Templars are already moving to try and get the Apple of Eden so they can start their New World Order. Quite a few of them make it clear that they intend to oppose both the Catholic Church and the Saracens. AC 2 & Brotherhood = ... Yeah, okay, you're right there. Renaissance Templars (save maybe Emilio Barbarigo) are pretty shitty, which is actually acknowledge by Modern Templars. Though I read somewhere that the Borgias plotline could have been made way better if the writers explored all the prejudice Rodrigo faced for being a Jew-descended Spaniard in Italy, and needless to say that Cesare Borgia was completely wasted for the sake of making him "Joffrey Expy". AC Revelations: Ahmet actually WANTS to help and unite the world, which he makes clear to Ezio. We get to see plenty of Templar Agents have their own reasons and justifications for doing what they do. When you get down to it, Ottoman Assassins and Byzantine Templars are basically killing over an old cultural grudge and a locked-up library that, as far as they knew, is full of old books and maps. I think the best thing about Rogue is one question Shay asks Achilles: What gives the _Assassins_ the right to decide the future of countries and humanity? There is the greatest paradox regarding the Assassin's Creed: they claim they want mankind to decide its own fate and create a peaceful world... but aren't Templars humans too? Why are ANY efforts of their part to do exactly that so inacceptable and wrong? Sure, they're wrong in wanting to enslave people using the Pieces of Eden, but the Assassins got it into their heads at some point that only THEY are in the right when they do anything. Killing people, manipulating politicians, clerics and governments, theft, working with thieves, prostitutes and mercenaries, causing and manipulating wars or disasters, deciding what people should be able to do or think, using the Pieces of Eden to experiment and uncover secrets and then holding monopoly on how such secrets are used, taking advantage of people's tragedies to convert them into more Assassins (if not indoctrinate them from birth) and then kill them if they don't do as you say? It's only okay when THEY do it. When the Templars, the Hermeticists or anyone else try it? Hidden Blade to the neck, screaming that "mankind isn't ready" and "you're the bad guy cause you killed my [insert relative]". (Sidenote: Maybe Nixon was an Assassin?! MIND. BLOWN.) Like Edward Kenway once said, the Templars may want to be the guy who controls all the water during a drought so he can tell people what to do... but the Assassins as a whole are like Achilles. They do what they do, and don't really put any thought or care in the devastation they leave in their wake. They may feel a little guilt and doubt, but go back to thinking their Creed and ideals of freedom justify anything and everything 5 seconds later. When you really think about it, the Assassins are no different from any religion, political ideology (right or left) or social cause. Ironically, when you get down to it, both Assassins and Templars are still just playing the Isu's game and in fact still worship them to some degree; only difference is that the Templars want to BE the new Isu, while the Assassins are still acting like religious cults finding "sacred artifacts", hiding it away in fear and (unconscious) adoration. Unfortunately, it looks like Ubisoft itself has failed to learn the very message their game subconsciously carries.

The first time I played Rogue was when it was released alongside of Unity. What I loved about this game was how easy they made it for me to empathize with Shay. I understood his betrayal of the Assassins. I also felt his sadness & struggle with hunting down his former friends & allies. To me, it felt like he was slowly seduced into joining the Templars. It didn’t have the cliche, ham fisted feel of “Well, they betrayed me so I’ll join the other side to spite them”. Shay initially just wanted to keep people safe from the rush to grab power that both sides were caught up in. Rogue was a fairly short game but Ubisoft did a great job with Shay & his story.

@mr-mr-1013 жыл бұрын
I found the counter-Assassin stuff super interesting and it got me thinking on an idea for an AC game. What if you were on the run from both the Templars and the Assassins? Maybe you pissed them both off and got exiled from one or maybe you have a friend/love interest whose secretly in the other group and you decide to say "fuck it" to the cycle of violence of the two orders and try to bring them both down so the secret war can finally end. Assassins would use the stalkers and snipers to try to take you down from a bush or a ledge while the Templar would have their own goons and fancy weapons they've always been able to buy. It would be interesting to see the betrayal not be immediately known by everyone in both orders so you could have a mission of protecting the Templar and then in the next you're infiltrating a Templar hideout for the Assassins while they still mostly believe you are a Templar. Maybe you could get the two sides to fight each other like if you drag a Templar patrol to an Assassin hideout, they'd start fighting and you could make an escape instead of trying to fight both sides at once. This would be perfect for a Cold War-era setting with the theme of spies and double agents, being constantly hunted by two very powerful organizations who do not want you to live but ultimately have much larger beef with the other org. But I know AC doesn't like very modern settings so it could be set in the West with themes of freedom (from both orgs and the cycle) and what happens after you previously gave your life to a cause you no longer believe in.

One minor touch I love between this game and AC4: Edward closes the eyes of every single one of his victims. He kills them, but he at least treats them with respect, no matter how much he hated them. Shay doesn't, even when he's killing someone who used to be his best friend. Just a small touch that goes to show his character. Edit: when I wrote this, Black Flag and Rougue were the only AC games I'd played. I still haven't played most of the Desmond games, but I have played 1 and 2, and my point stands even more. Altair's only action is swiping a feather to prove he killed them. Ezio says something sweet and respectful, and tells them "Requiescat in pace." Edward closes their eyes. Shay just walks away.

Ezio's Family is so prevalent in the series that I pretty much say it's become the theme song for the entire franchise, even as we dig into Assassins who have no connection, blood or otherwise, to Desmond's lineage. Edit to add: Rogue shows us why the American Brotherhood fell to pieces and I get some catharsis knowing that everything Shay did is ultimately undone by Connor. Kind of shows the simple truth that ideas are functionally immortal. One of the only ways to kill them is to kill their believers before they spread it. Achillies was left alive, so the Brotherhood continued to endure into the Revolutionary Era. Edit Edit to add: I got a huge kick out of learning Liam's full name: Liam O'Brien. It's as Irish as it comes but one of my favorite VAs literally shares that name.

Also I agree the only thing keeping this from being one of the greatest AC titles is length. Even doing all the side stuff it's barely 8-10 hours and that's super short imo

I played this game on release, didn't watch trailers or reviews. And it shocked me, how good the story was. It was, sometimes a bit rushed, but it still was good. Everything you talked about, was my thoughts when I was done with the game. Thank you, for reminding me about it. I'll go and replay it

I really like Rogue despite its faults, and there are several. I consider it the seventh main title in the franchise, instead of a last gen spin off at the time which Ubi clearly regarded it as. Over time the game I've found has got a lot of love as a great spiritual successor to Black Flag.

Loved this game, was a bit too short, but loved whatever I got. Shay is seriously badass..The outfits make him look even more so. The opening music and the menu thingy where assassin logo turns into Templar cross is brilliant . New weapons make the game a lot more enjoyable . The new game mechanics are cool too. Morrigan obliterating almost everything is so satisfying to see. But I would've loved to see Shay in another game, maybe unity. Where Arno actually tries to hunt for Shay in a DLC. Maybe they could've brought Connor back and Connor guides Arno to hunt and kill Shay. Shay's story was left open.

Rogue’s naval stuff is way more fun to me solely because of the better ship and the different environment. Sailing around the subarctic in a snowstorm at night dodging waves while fighting a small fleet is JUST SO COOL. Black Flag is arguably better overall but, damn if I don’t love the North Atlantic

I just noticed that the scar that shay has on his face can be seen as a mark of betrayal from the assassins.

Little hidden fact. The symbol on Shay's chest we know it as the ''The templars'' But it's actually the black cross. Black cross is basically the good templars. They are the ones called when a Templar turns rogue or makes people suffer. It would be nice to see another game with Shay as he takes care of a corrupted Templar group and make it right. I love the Assassin's as much as I love the Templars. Each with their sides. As you put it greatly. Humans will always be in the gray. Black Cross are the Elite Templars that believe in controlled freedom. While Master Assassin's (Ezio, Altair, Achilies in AC3) are the one's responsible to lead their brotherhood into Absolute Freedom path. Both groups want the same goal. Only different ways to achieve it. Love Assassin's Creed Lore.

Got into the remaster of this recently, surprisingly good. Only 2 pet peeves of mine -The world map feels smaller than Black Flag, especially out at sea. -The premise felt very forced. I get that we need to have Shay go rogue somehow, but did the other Assassins have to be so cartoonishly arrogant? Granted, the Templars are the ones telling the story here. There’s bound to be a biased perspective, but they were practically giving him all the reasons to defect rather than let it happen naturally.

Rogue should’ve been the only assassins creed game of 2014, the story could’ve been longer without the company having to work on two games at once and honestly between Unity and Rogue, the premise of a rogue assassin is much more interesting than a French Ezio.
@Sekaidestroyer2 жыл бұрын
Wait, wait- Ezio ans Arno are not really alike? I guess you could mention the fact they were both raised in wealthy families but even this isn't really the thing, as Ezio was literally the son with no responsibilities of the a rich banker and Arno was lowkey a servant. He wasn't adopted. Not to mention that Ezio was strongly moved by the desire of vengeance. Til the point it stopped being logical to him. Arno wasn't moved at all at first. He kept on falling into weirder and weirder situations and wanted to get out of them. He didn't want to get involved. But the decision was taken away from him repeatedly until he finally said 'to the heck with it, if I can't escape, I will at least do it my style.' I do admit it that i would love to see a longer story for Shay, maybe a confrontation between the two of them (Or Arno with Shay's offspring) but Ubi won't give us the satisfaction 🥺

You will enjoy Unity on a thematic level. There are Assassins and Templars who are sympathetic and antagonistic, the disunity between the social classes of Paris also shown within the French Assassins and Templars.

I even wish Ubi even gives more Templar experince for player. If there's game such "Templar's Order" instead of "Assassin's Creed", it could've been great. Or at least gives game to explain why Templar become greater as the time goes.

I really liked ACR both because of the Assassins maybe not always the great benevolent anarchists they're painted as, but also because of the changes to gameplay. I also learned a lot about the F&I War not included in my formal education, and I remember saying 'nuh-uh that's malarkey' about the air rifle before finding out it's real and actually existed. Very excellent companion piece to Unity, where the Assassins are depicted as out of touch weirdos.

AC rogue was one of the greatest story driven games that explore the fov of the baddies I ever experienced. The game was shaded by the release of AC unity, a game so blunt and broken that Rogue flew under EVERYONES radar. The game only improved since black flag and we get to see Alasca + the frontier,NY, and Boston remastered since AC3. And one little neatpicky thing I loved was that online events such as white whales and community treasures got the boot. It was so frustrating to get those in black flag. Also small changes in naval combat that was just making it better. Great game.

When I was younger of course I always wanted the assassins win. The revolutionaries are always the “heroes” if they win. Grabbing power from those who corrupt. But this game and growing up really changed that. No one is always the good guy. Too much Chaos is just as bad as total dictatorship. There’s a grey area in there that must be determined. Layla from the new gen assassins creed games was a great concept. A templar that went to the assassins for valid reasons. The grey area. Someone who understands both are necessary and there isn’t a true answer. Granted these two organizations go back and forth and kill millions throughout history but it was started after going after corruption. It’s a really great concept that needs to be explored more. I hope the grey line gets more obvious and I don’t find myself rooting for the assassins as much as I used to.

This is why I would side with the Templars; a world in which people can do whatever the fuck they want is not a world that I look forward to. Even though many of them take the control thing a little too far, it is better than complete chaos and an utter breakdown of social order.

Love that this is a video that exists. By far, it is easily in my top 3 AC titles & found it to be a great disservice that not more fans of the franchise opted to dive into this title. While I have yet to play Unity (all those bugs sorta turned me off from it, but perhaps now they're fixed?) However, this title brought the best elements of 3 & Black Flag while also re-contextualizing them both & broadening the scope of the story as a whole in a way that ... if only marketing had leaned more into all told.

I loved rogue from the first time I played it and appreciated that they put something out there for those who, by choice or necessity, stuck with the PS3 a little longer than most. I think I've only played it twice in full but both times it struck me as an amazing story and a true shame it's often the one most omitted from people's assassin's creed history, especially because of the chills I get being the one to kill Charles Dorian at the end that makes me want to play unity (and frankly unity needs all the help it can get).

PV-man! That really was quick. Don't overwork yourself ^^ I really liked the idea of this game, seein the other side. Beside some comics the only other time that happened - or was tried, rather - as far as I remember was the 'story' of the online multiplayermode from I think it was AC Revelations. There were even some cutscenes with Vidic and all. And of course the pretty mind blowing beginning of AC III.

A small but important thing I think you looked over is the fact that in the wake of Connor's death, Shay says that Achilles looked furious rather than grieving. This is just my speculation, but it leads me to believe that he poured his pain and loss into the Assassins, blinding him to the dangers of pursuing the Precursor sites. It isn't until he sees the site in the Arctic for himself that he finally sees clearly Also, I’m surprised you didn’t count when Haytham shoots Achilles in the leg. He’s understanding enough when Shay outlines his reasons for keeping him alive, but at the end of the day, he’s still ruthless enough to leave Achilles with a permanent reminder of his failure.

Shay changing sides was done very well, in my opinion. Some characters become either too whiny or too heartless when they betray their former allies, but Shay had a good balance. The first 2 sequences of the game also show very early how far removed he is from the other Assassins and the Creed. Liam, Hope and Kesegowaase often treat Shay as below them, or hold information from him, and nothing needs to be said about Chevalier. Wardrop's assassination is also an important moment. Shay at that point doesn't fully understand what the Templars truly represent, and simply accuses him of generic villainy, which Wardrop easily refutes. It's clear that while Shay is a great Assassin, it's not where he belongs. Absurdly nice as he may be, Colonel Monro was an integral part of Shay's turn. He not only represented the nobler sides of the Templars, but he also instantly treated Shay as an equal, unlike the Assassins. His death at the hands of Liam was the last push Shay needed to join the Templars. And I just like some of his lines. "Freedom from want is the greatest freedom of all" and "Money is a means to an end, not an end itself". I love Christopher Gist. Not just as a character, but what he means for Shay. Shay started of as a light-hearted jokester, but he became a lot more serious when he started working with the Templars. Gist was just as funny as Shay used to be, and I like to think he stuck around to keep Shay from dipping too far into depression.
