I think the Chameleon could have been a lot better if her plan was specifically motivated by Po. In particular, him being made Dragon Warrior highlighting the unfairness and double standards of her being declared 'too small'. "You were too fat, too lazy, and too uncoordinated, but you got a chance and became a legend? Whilst I was just too small, and I got kicked into the gutter. Well now I own those gutters. And I want your chance and your legend now too."

I have come up with an extended backstory for the chameleon. In Juniper City, the strong prey on the weak. The chameleon's family was pushed around by criminals and one day, her family was killed by bandits. She wanted to learn Kung Fu to fight them off but no one would teach her because they laughed at her size. Ever since then, she practiced sorcery and trained an apprentice of her own (Zhen), so she could steal the staff and take the powers of Tai Lung, Lord Shen and Kai. This is so she could make those criminals bow down to her, all because they killed her family and took away the people she loved.
@kellyntaylor81846 ай бұрын
@@Burra_Shetland39574To me, she should’ve had the combined traits of the three original villains. There was a video that explained this and I found it to be more enjoyable! She lived peacefully, but bandits kept stealing everything so she wanted to learn kung fu. Gets rejected, find someone who does believe in her and trains only to end up dead thanks to the bandits. Goes on a rampage and then discovers sorcery, gets power hungry and goes on another rampage on those who laughed at her to then return home. Only to be met with horror from her own family when they got the news of what she did. So she then snaps and decides to take Kung Fu from everyone so that no one would rely on it and use it as a way to be above someone
@AnujChatterjee-q5b6 ай бұрын
That is interesting - what the original comment said. But then she is actually older than Po and the Furious Five (confirmed by senior animation intern who worked on the movie - Abby Roadie) so she could not have been motivated with vengeance against Po. However, she did have envy and jealousy against kung fu warriors in general. The animator added that the Furious Five had not perfected their styles before Chameleon was rejected. Also on a personal note I actually liked it. Her backstory was a polar opposite of Po. Then I have been tired of cliched backstories like "society killed my parents so I became evil". Chameleon's backstory I found interesting and refreshing.

I really love KP 4's message of the older generation passing their knowledge on to the next , and how it serves to contrast Po and Chameleon's relationship with Zhen. Po treated Zhen as an equal, teaching her all throughout their journey, and earning her trust, before eventually taking her on as a proper apprentice at the end. Chameleon, meanwhile, despite referring to Zhen as her apprentice, never actually taught Zhen anything she knows, like her sorcery techniques, and instead treated her as a glorified servant, and was more than willing to kill her off without a second thought.

Something I love that you didn’t mention is the parallels between Po and The Chameleon. They both had the same backstory, both wanted to learn Kung fu but were mocked and ridiculed based on their appearances, with Po being too fat and the Chameleon too small. However, they took different paths from there. Po embraced who he was, used that to his advantage and made it his own. And through that, he got respect, love, and Kung fu. Meanwhile the Chameleon decided to take the easy route, turning to magic to simply take what she wanted from those who already had it. They serve as mirrors for each other both visually and narratively, and I really wish the movie focused on it more. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. I liked it more than 3, though that personal opinion. This movie is gorgeous, and the fight scenes are super fun and interesting. I had a blast seeing it in the theatre

@AnujChatterjee-q5b5 ай бұрын
There are actually a lot more parallels between Chameleon and Po than just their backstories. 1) They both contrast the theme of change. Po struggles to change internally i.e. accept change from dragon warrior to spiritual leader while Chameleon can change externally with ease. Chameleon uses external transformations to gain power while Po undergoes internal transformations. 2) They are also polar opposites as mentors. Chameleon exploits Zhen's skills and sees her as "something to use" and even admits it in a harsh way. Po on the other despite being reluctant in his new duties, he mentors Zhen with wisdom from Shifu and Oogway, he treats her as his equal and sees good in her. Even he needed Zhen to get him to the Chameleon but he never saw Zhen as just "something to use". I just love the parallel with the peach pit. Po gives her a peach pit and life advice while Chameleon hands her a fake jewel peach pit, symbolizing a false destiny. Tai Lung challenged Po's physical strength. Lord Shen challenged Po's mental strength. General Kai challenged Po spiritually. And Chameleon challenges Po's adaptability !!! Po was unable to defeat Chameleon so he gave the Staff to zhen because Chameleon won't see her as a threat. Even though he faked it I am sure Chameleon would have won if the fight continued. I am upset how so many people label her as a trash villain just because is she is not as good as the OGs. I personally think she is better than Kai. There are so many strengths in Chameleon storytelling wise but people treat her like a lazily written villain. It's actually they who are too lazy to see the positives in her.

My greatest problem by far with this movie is the villains motivation to steal kung fu techniques. "They said I was too small" says the chameleon, while standing next to a viper and a mantis. Would have felt more believable if she was accepted by different masters and tried to learn and eventually copy other styles, but found her body couldn't keep up, so she turned to magic. But still an enjoyable enough watch.
@AllistorRichards7 ай бұрын
The villain's motivation makes a lot more sense when you look at her critically and realize how *old* she is compared to Mantis and Viper, who are essentially generations younger than her. She grew up in a time where her size was a disability in the way of teaching that denied her entry into the teachings, obviously between that time Shifu and others proved the old prejudices wrong and broke the barriers the two shared, paving the way for masters like Mantis and Viper, but she let society tell her what she could be similar to how Zhen let it do the same, with the difference being that Zhen had someone like Po to encourage her to be better and not be what the world told her to be.
@memelescream47967 ай бұрын
to be fair, that could be an interpretation of it. obviously not the intended one, but she could be thinking too small. She isn't trying to adapt her own abilities into a Kung Fu style, like how every other Kung Fu Master does it, she just tried to copy and steal from others. She wasn't thinking large enough to be creative. She was too small-minded.
@AnujChatterjee-q5b7 ай бұрын
@@AllistorRichardsIf you think about it even Shifu was not that impartial and open minded. He never believed that Po could be a kung fu warrior until Oogway ascended. Then even in the Canon Shorts he turned away the Furious Five except Tigress and accepted them only after they defeated Boar !! And Shifu is the closest master to Oogway. So if Shifu, the closest to the wise Oogway cannot see the potential in other students I don't see why other masters won't see. It's not shown but there is still canon evidence to justify her backstory !!
@AnujChatterjee-q5b7 ай бұрын
@@memelescream4796I think you are on the right track but I would like to elaborate saying that she did try to invent her own kung fu style. In the final fight against Zhen, she uses her tail and tongue and not the stolen skills. So she did self-train after rejections but kung fu is no piece of cake is it ? If you are not taught by masters you cannot excel at it now can you ? The reason she wanted to learn kung fu was to gain power and respect so she turns to sorcery as another medium to gain them !!

I've been absolutely tired of the amount of hate I've seen this one get. Not even criticisms, just straight up saying the movie sucked, the villain sucked, Awkwafina's character sucked. I know I know, this movie isn't the best, there's ways even I'd change things to make it even better, but it's not an awful movie, it's still really enjoyable. I've seen a few ways artists would improve it and sure, it'd be nice if it was what we got. But people forget there was still a great deal of heart and soul put into this, true passion of artists. People forget to enjoy and appreciate, especially when what we've been given isn't even God awful. I think the villain was really good, pretty menacing and powerful, and a pretty good personality and motive. The way people were like "Being too small to learn Kung Fu is so stupid," judging someone's size is not uncommon ESPECIALLY in the previous movies, like Mantis being seen as harmless for being so small or Po seen as incapable for being plus size. Get bullied or shamed for something as insignificant as appearance, or even witness someone else suffer this, and then say something. It can take any repetitive negative thing to change someone for the worse, people can suck and will make you feel sucky about stuff that shouldn't actually matter. Awkwafina, I never understood the hate she gets. I don't know much about like who she is, but the complaints on her voice I especially don't get, like what's so annoying? She's pretty entertaining and funny with her roles, and she made her character here even more likable in my eyes. And I really felt for her story, I mean I empathize towards many, but come on, a story like hers isn't easy, it's painful for anyone and it's sad to see. Another thing, people really believing it would've been better if Tigress was the next Dragon Warrior. They don't seem to understand it was never. Her. Destiny. She believed and hoped it was, others did too, but after potential and reasoning were revealed, everyone came to a realization and accepted it was Po's destiny. Tigress is still great as she is, she doesn't need to be Dragon Warrior to continue what she's already been masterful at, it took something like this for Po to start reaching his goals and get where he is, but he doesn't need it anymore either, no one needs to keep a title to keep doing what they do. Which brings me to my final point, the plotline of choosing a new Dragon Warrior isn't stupid either. It feels like choosing a new master in Kung Fu or Karate or what have you, they can't do it or be it forever. They probably could've better shown in Universe that time really passed, maybe even visually age Po up slightly, and the other characters of course. Plus it's a nice redemption for someone who felt or seemed like nobody, just like how Po started. It's a pretty nice message, in basically every film, that no matter your origins, no matter how you've failed or messed up in life, redemption can be possible. You can turn things around and make it better for you, you don't have to accept being stuck in any horrible situation. It's your life. Like I said, the movie's not perfect, but so much feels overlooked and I'm always grateful we have channels like these shining light on the good, giving everyone a reminder for all the hard work, and showing there's something good even about the most awful films ever. People can dislike whatever, everyone has their opinions, but hate is never good, and no matter what, there's always something someone can find to enjoy.

Facts !! I am tired of these criticisms appearing in every review of the movie - Chameleon's motivation does not make sense, Tigress should have been the dragon warrior, Awkwafina ruins movies. I am glad you countered them. Kung Fu Panda 4 is not perfect but it has a lot of overlooked themes like the message of embracing change, being a good mentor, the peach pit wisdom and so on. I think its a great addition to the franchise and I like the direction with Po being the next Oogway and Zhen being his apprentice.

From TV Tropes: The film is only 94 minutes long, shorter than Kung Fu Panda 3. *This was mandated* by certain Universal executives, affecting DreamWorks releases starting with Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. Their rationale for animated tentpole films being strictly 90 minutes was to ensure more showtimes for more money and that they believed *"children can't sit through a longer movie".* *And that was the only thing they imposed on the crew.*

And they had one job, ONE JOB! It leaves Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the only animated summer blockbuster that's now highly successful but not for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Elemental, The Flash & Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, now they've suffered the same fate as Ruby Gillman which is why last year's June started fatigue on superheroes, action, nostalgia, blockbusters, etc. Even before Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had a terrible opening weekend.

I have LOVED every KFP movie prior to this, but Didn’t care for Zhen. I’ve got nothing against Awkwafina and have liked her in plenty of other stuff, but I’ve never liked this kind of character. Vanelope, Nimona, Zhen, etc. Replacing the Five with her was a letdown. And now she’s set to be a new main prominent character for any other future properties…. I’m not excited for that. Still, great animation and Kung Fu as always.

I could see this as a potential opener for the exploration of multiculturalism by honing in on the "regional" nature of the Dragon Warrior, with Zhen and Po looking to expand the umbrella of their protection and having to deal with new peoples as well as figuring out how you do this across so much territory. So, Zhen is trying to prove her new title by cleaning up the streets of her home town even more, but from this catches wind of someone even FURTHER away who needs help. They go out and engage with this new threat, and in the process find others who have the spirit of kung fu but have no experience with the concepts as the core cast knows them. Part of the conflict is bridging this acceptance that these new heroes are strong and capable even if their framework of the ideas is different. Culminate with a 3rd movie where the core villain is explicitly using some kind of communication network as part of their plan, and the whole final act is Zhen, Po, and Shifu organizing all these fighters they've come to know and trust but not by giving them second to second orders, but trusting them to handle their little section of this larger fight.

15:33 Yeah, I agree. When I saw that scene and compared the way Po opened the portal to the spirit realm, compared to the way the Chameleon did, it felts more natural when Po did it. Like, it opened willingly for him, while for the Chameleon it was more forced or ripped apart. And the way that the portal opens for the Chameleon, it's grey and dull and ashen like and kinda looks like the way she shapeshifts, where for Po his golden dragons are glowing and seem to show, maybe to represent the comparisons between who wields the staff. Even their movements to open the portal is different, where the Chameleon is more forceful with it like when she drags it across the ground and breaks up the floor, compared to Po who's more graceful and gentle.

Genuinely i think my personal gripe with this movie (id still say its like. 6.5-7/10) is just the art direction didn’t feel as strong. Mostly with the lighting, especially coming off os (imo) the most visually stunning KFP which is the 3rd film. Other than that Its a solid good time.

I think the one thing that would have pushed this movie into the same realm as the others (watch it till I die) is if Po hadn't declared that Zhen would be the Dragon Warrior. I think it would have been more interesting she was simply his first student as a spiritual leader and in the future there were more candidates for the Dragon Warrior position. I think that Po handing off the Dragon Warrior title should have been the very end of Kung Fu Panda the series, and we as an audience should have been in suspense until the final film as to who would inherit the title. Considering there is at east 2 more films greenlit, I think it would have been possible. However, the two dads who are clearly peak parent material both in how they care for each other and also their son single handedly saved the film for me.
