@Vadriel876 жыл бұрын
Gotta say, I'm pretty surprised at least one of the wins wasn't "Alicia Vikander's workout routine". That woman has abs that would make Chris Hemsworth feel insecure. I feel like anyone who has a problem with how she visually does or doesn't fit the role is a bit too focused on the coming-of-age experience the original character serviced back in the day. Her original "game assets" were pretty much the norm for female characters of the Polygon Age, but trying to translate that aspect into a modern film without breaking immersion in the world you're trying to build just isn't reasonable. Look what they did with the Angelina Jolie films...she's a fairly buxom woman to start with and they had her so padded-out that she looked ridiculous and it took AWAY from her appeal. This being a film interpretation of the more recent reboots of the video game franchise, her physique is pretty spot on. Game Lara isn't even nearly that sculpted, if I recall. As far as "asset proportions" she's not far off given that the rebooted Lara was designed with a little more realistic aesthetics in mind. And the costume design is on-point. The one somewhat reasonable gripe, and it's something that caught my eye for a couple minutes in the first trailers for the movie before vanishing as soon as I saw her actually PLAYING Lara, is that as far as basic facial features go Alicia Vikander doesn't really look much like the game's model for Lara. Someone along the lines of perhaps Evangeline Lilly or maybe Kate Beckinsale would probably suit the basic features for the game's version of her, but those are two clearly adult women who (as phenomenally lovely as they are, and definitely not "getting old") can't really pull off the "coming of age" feel that Alicia Vikander brings in. Casting is a tricky thing, and Alicia Vikander pulled off a sneak attack and absolutely killed the role. I know I'd be game for the franchise to continue with her in the lead, gaining some confidence and becoming the Lara we all know and love. Does the movie have a few small problems that keep it from being a massive hit, praised by all who watch it? Sure...but Alicia Vikander is NOT one of them. In a Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movie...they definitely delivered Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. At least a reboot-style origin story edition of her. I was pretty impressed when I watched it.

Something I added at the last second and then cut from the video (didn't want to be redundant, but clarification may be needed) is my reasoning for saying Bond can be black, yadda, yadda. My point is that they're all just actors. I understand the need for representation, but making movies is still big business. If Scarlett Johannsson doesn't have the correct race, gender, religion, sexuality...knee cap length, whatever...and she's essentially pushed out, the movie probably doesn't get made. Studios need to be able to put a marketable name behind projects especially ones unfamiliar to the general populace. But it goes for more recognizable stuff like Batwoman too. I'm just saying that if you're excited about a lesbian superhero piece of media coming out, shaming the lead out of the project doesn't help the project get made. And then there's no lesbian superhero TV show. Or best case, they cast an unknown "gay enough" or Jewish actress, no one tunes in, and the show doesn't make it past the pilot. That's all I was trying to say. It might not seem fair or right, but it's where we are right now.

Making movies and TV shows is a business, just like everything else. Just cast the best actor for the job. Some viewers may think they aren't the best actor, but THEY didn't cast the movie. The sooner they accept that fact, the better off they'll be. It's not just the Ruby Rose thing, it's John Boyega as Finn, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie or Zendaya as M. J. They auditioned, and the film-makers thought they were the best actors for the job, plain and simple. There's no agenda. That's just a dumb way to complain about a character you hate for reasons I don't care to understand.

10:10 In real terms someone's weight is almost meaningless in a situation where the person on the bottom is on their back. Even a 100 lb woman can lift a big man with her hips (feet planted on the ground and push up) and throw him to the side. I've done it myself in self-defense training and was very surprised at how easy it is. As for the situation where she was using her weight to keep the guy under water... thaaat's not so believable. She could have done it if his arms were pinned behind his back, thus stealing the way to push himself up. EDIT - Just a note on this Lara's physical appearance: screw toxic fandoms. Vikander looks _believable_ , she looks like she is physically able to do all the stuff we see her do (Jesus, did you see her abs, ffs?). She's not there pouting and looking over her shoulder with hooded eyes. She's there straining, giving it her all, being afraid, pushing through and grunting in pain instead of moaning ever so softly. I like this Lara.
@gilgamesh3106 жыл бұрын
Lara did hook one of her legs around the arm of the guy who was in the water, as she had her arms around his neck. It would have been harder for him to get up that way. Her abs are amazing too. It’s baffling that some peoole say she’s too skinny for the role.
@timoyr29546 жыл бұрын
@@gilgamesh310 I hate when they do stuff like this in such darkness, I had sunlight coming out my window when I watched the scene and couldn't see any of that happening (my bad, I know). In regards to people saying she's too skinny, I think it's just a minority with a fetish. She's the same size as the character in the source material and no one complained about that. Just like with Wonder Woman, I think many more people would be upset if they had cast a buff actress.
@gilgamesh3106 жыл бұрын

1:34 This version of Lara isn't "so intrepid she can do just about anything" . Yes she's got skills and talent, but we do see her lose, (kickboxing match) get tricked (on the boats in China) and needs help figuring out the one puzzle (Lu Ren figures that one out). Which is one of the reasons I liked her. Considering all the comments about Rey from the new Star Wars movie being a Mary Sue-this version of Lara seems almost like she was written to counter some of those arguments. 6:25 I appreciated that as well, like the one scene in Dr. Strange where he also gets upset about killing someone. People tend to forget that taking another humans life ISN'T supposed to be easy on the psyche. To many of the online "critic" community love to bust out the "Why don't they just kill that person" line like its no different then changing a light bulb. Sure, she gets over it quickly later in the movie, but I like it in a movie where they do address it. 5:53 No real comment there. I just like the way she delivers that line. I liked this movie. More people should have given it a chance. I don't agree with the saying that there are no good video game movies. There may not be many GREAT ones, but there are plenty that are an enjoyable way to kill an afternoon and eat popcorn too.

As some who got hooked on Tomb Raider games from the beginning and love the survivor timeline as much or maybe more than the original timeline, I think this movies was a great adaptation of both of the current survivor timeline games. It mixes a little from Tomb Raider (2013) and a little from Rise of the Tomb Raider, and has some of the best game tie ins I've ever seen in a movie, paying direct homage to the source material. One of my favorite game tie ins is when Lara is on the plane at the top of the water fall, looks up and sees the symbol for the parachute. It's the symbols used in the game(s). There was also the way she used the broken upper deck on the boat to traverse the broken hull, that screamed pulled from the video game for me, which was touched on in the video. I agree very much with this video and even some of the casting choices of directors talk, both in the video and your clarification you posted.

I can respect this point of view, that whole first game, having to use stealth and your mind over fire power, was really something special and the story wad compelling, but if this was a 1 for 1 retelling of that game we'd have been annoyed, first we've already seen (and participated) in that story, plus if she did things different from how it's done in the game it wouldn't have sat well. @@ResidentFemboy gunplay and the guns themselves are very similar, only difference is TR was more up front with the violence and had finishers and exploration isn't that different all TR added were brainless "tombs" to raid...that's it
@ResidentFemboy5 жыл бұрын
@@557deadpool I liked the tombs, most of the puzzles where pretty unique and where not too hard to complete. Gunplay is the same in most 3rd person games. violence in an Uncharted game just doesn't go well, you're a thief in Uncharted, and a woman trying to survive in TR. the bow and the stealth mechanic are really the pinnacle of TR combat, thats why i think its better.

May I suggest you do Everything Great About The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 before Into The Spider-Verse is released? It's the best time to do it. Plus, I don't think they're as bad as fans say they are. In fact, I like them. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were the glue that held the films together. It's Sony that's to blame for TASM2 failure. That I can agree on. Nevertheless, I still enjoy these movies and I really miss Andrew Garfield. I still wonder what Sony's cinematic universe would've looked like. Anyone agree/disagree?

What did Sony Do this time?
@bladersmosh6 жыл бұрын
There were several things Sony did. Not just the Sony hack but also from one rumour I heard, they apparently cut a large amount of Marc Webb's original vision of the film (which solely focused more on the mystery of Peter's parents) and forced him to include several teasers to set up future sequels and spinoffs. So mostly it was studio interference. Also, if you're going to hire someone to be part of a potential cinematic universe (weather as a director, writer or producer), don't hire Alex Kurtzman. What was Universal thinking when they hired him to write and direct The Mummy? Apparently, Guillermo Del Toro was offered the helm the Dark Universe but in a low budget, horror, gothic style like the original Universal Monster movies which would've been pretty awesome. But despite that, I still want a Jekyll/Hyde movie with Russel Crowe. He was the best part of The Mummy in my opinion.

Hey, Lee, I've been a follower of your stuff for awhile now. I love your optimism, and I admire the fact that you don't allow your enjoyment of the film to cloud your judgement of its flaws, and the fact that you don't discourage people from liking or disliking a film simply because you like it. Very fair and kind of you. I also love how you give merit to films that are very controversial (Suicide Squad, Star Wars Prequels, Man of Steel, etc.), but don't state that your opinion means that other's are invalid. I really enjoyed Tomb Raider, as a fan of the original 2013 game. Looking back on the video game now, however, I see more of the flaws with it. The movie is alright, an enjoyable, fun adventure film, but is held back by boring characters and a paint-by-numbers plot. The movie only really picks up for me after Lara escapes the villains and ends up falling into the river. Her relationship with her father is sweet, and one of the most believable relationships in the film (I didn't believe her relationship with Lu Ren for a second). Everything to do with him is where the film's emotions truly impact me, especially his sacrifice at the end. As a video game movie, it's alright, and thankfully doesn't shy away from the video game tropes that make people enjoy the franchise. Just thought I'd put my two cents into the conversation. :) I'm not completely certain if you take requests, but it seems you do, so I would highly recommend "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn". It's an amazingly animated film that manages to do motion-capture, but not dive directly into the Uncanny Valley. No easy feat. You don't have to make a video about it, I just think you'd enjoy it. It's not for kids, though.

I didn't grow up with Tomb Raider as I lived in a somewhat strict household when it came to media I consumed and the only consels I had was a gamecube, a gameboy and DS. However during my first semester in college, I was curious to see what the series was like by playing the reboot 2013 game, which is one of my favorite games. I thought this movie was amazing. I wouldn't consider it the most faithful as a lot of parts are taken out from the game (Lara already being an archelogist, the cult on the island, the oni, etc) but it still has moments true to the game. My favorite part of the movie is where Lara has her hands bound and somehow survives a torturtous obstacle course becuase the chorography is nearly identical to the game and had so much emotional impact. Also I cried at the end. (I also cried during the game...like two or three times. I'm very emotional)
