Everything is good now that we have broken the trail to the cabin and have a fire going. I explain why the Snowdog would not have worked in our cabin approach.

Martin and the cabin is like a marriage, for better or worse, till death do us part. Even when it can be so hard, he sucks it up and takes it in stride. When you love something (or someone) so much, nothing seems as bad as it is! Good to see you and Jim are rested, eating well (as are the birds) and back to making memories. 👍🐦

*My Jays were acting extremely cautious, it took a long time for them to even approach me...and I've known them for many years....which only means one thing...they have laid there eggs already....and it goes to show there intelligence...they won't take unnecessary risks knowing they have a brood on the way and that takes priority...love my Jays. Great vid Martin (As Per Usual)*

Thanks for another great video, Martin. As we are watching it...our own temperature here is 0°. We can stay inside for now and relax watching you guys at that great cabin handling the snow and cold so well. We've heard you mention those "Vonnie's Pies" so often, while at the grocery...we picked up a package of 'Hostess Mini Cherry Pies'. Although they sure can be nowhere near as good as yours...you've kinda started something. Now we'll have go outside ourselves to do some chores and work off some of this weight gain. (Laughs).

I spend all my time at my place now. I like the change of seasons. I hunt,trap, fish and ice fish right out my door. I can go a month in winter before somebody wanders in for a cup of coffee, conversation, or they might stay a night or 2. The summer people always are coming to my place for firewood, which I sell them. Sometimes I work on one or 2 of their places. I am glad I retired here. I don’t need much and don’t ask for anything I can’t get myself. Life is good. Thanks for sharing Martin. Always a pleasure. PeaceY

Thanks for good info. I will probably not go with a snowmobile any time soon but am checking into them so I know what will work in the deep powdery snow. If we tamp the path a little the Dawg does great so for out work projects it will still do our job. Later I haul large boulders and it does not even slip but we prepped the path.

Hi Martin, loving the snowy videos : ) Would it be possible to make a front skid/fairing out of half a wheel barrow or whatever is around to put on the front of the snow dog. This may compress the snow a bit as it moves forward and allow the tracs to get a grip. A possible project for you to tinker with. Best wishes from England

Snowmobiles would go in that snow. In general terms there's 2 types of Snowmobiles; trail sleds and powders sleds. All of the major manufacturers makes several models of each. You need a wide track for commuting back and forth. A wide track will float on that snow.

Grew up at the cottage on Bird lake in south Nopiming. Belonged to the local snowmobile club and the odd year we had snow like that the only sled that would break trail for everyone else was a skidoo tundra 250 and later a newer model 270. They are obviously lightweight but the real key is they were single bangers and just did not have the power to spin the track. Spinning the track is the killer in deep snow. Never ever got stuck in snow, slush on a lake yes. :) These were the 121" tracks too, the long tracks I'm sure would be even better. A bravo 250 if you can find it would also be good. Both the Tundra and Bravo had the rack on the back to hold a 5 gal jerry can. We used a milk crate to hold essentials. Next big snow year ask someone you know in the area that snowmobiles to break the trail down with a sled. Once the snow has the air taken out of it it hardens overnight and is wide enough to give you a nice easy path to walk on and use the snowdog. We're not getting any younger. lol

@@TheNorthwoodsman1 Thank you Martin. Watching your canoe video's takes me back to my youth. I remember traveling up the Bird river to the north end of Eagle lake and fishing at the mouth of the Talon river just touching WCPP before it was a park. I prefer to head East from Bird into Snowshoe and Chase or south of that into Wilson, Trapline, Werner and Rex. Crown land so no need for the $15 and you see no one other than a few fly in camps. Always fun to see your fellow countryman in some shock and ask me where I came from, " oh the highway is just over there " I would say. After paying good money to get there I'm sure they got a chuckle asking the lodge owners about the highway. :)

That Snowdog I thought would be better in the deep snow than my Skidoo Tundra. I get stuck a lot. At least the Snowdog looks lighter to handle and get unstuck.

It is easier to pull out. Normally I would have stopped trying once it spun out but I was preparing video clips for a presentation here on what it can and can't do. Some good comments here about what machines are good in that stuff. Wide, long tracks seem to be the ticket.

Yep, snow dog is no good in deep snow, and the flat front just plows snow into a wall. a wedged nose would help, but everything has limitations including Martin and Jim. ;-)

I am learning and knew that it was a no-go across that yard but a picture is worth a thousand words so set up the disaster for a longer review of the snowdog. Now I have learned that as soon as it starts to spin you stop and kick a path in front.

Possibly! Traction in loose snow seems to be the drawback. Later Jim and I are hauling huge boulders on frozen pack and not a problem or any slipping.

Forget the snow dog. Next time offer the Jay’s more pancakes to carry your stuff back. In fact, I’ll carry it back for some of that cherry pie!

When you are out yard saling this year you may have to keep an eye open for a snow blower. Thanks or sharing.
@TheNorthwoodsman1
@TheNorthwoodsman1 2 жыл бұрын
All we have to do is stomp down parallel paths with snowshoes and let it freeze. The Dawg can then make it through pulling a big load.

I have 2 questions for you. (1) Do you close the wooden door at night? (2) What type of boots do you wear & are they warm?
@TheNorthwoodsman1
@TheNorthwoodsman1 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the wooden door is swung shut since the glass in the inner door is single pane. My ski boots are insulated but not overly so. I keep some sorrel pack boots hanging for really cold hikes.
