My main question, why on earth didn't he drop the sump off?! It's a five minute job, and you would see any debris sat on the plate, and be able to check the bores from below, as they really should be.

The spark plug tubes seem to be the culprit for the oil leaks. Easy replacement. The valve cover gasket is metal and doesn’t often fail. Agreed with another commenter that the sump plate needs to be removed. In fact it’s likely that it’s been removed in the past and too much RTV sealant used when it was put back on causing the excess to circulate through the engine and end up in the filter and sump plate. I totally wouldn’t be afraid to DIY this engine. Good purchase!

I own and diy (and race) two 986 boxsters. Here’s what I think: 1) generally a good result! Some engine and suspension wear and tear, with some things to address, and some things to live with , in my opinion. 2) you can diy the most urgent things. 3) secondary air and o2 sensors - diy those, not hard 4) brake pads and rotors - diy those, can do for hundreds, not thousands 5) spark plug holes - replace the tubes in those middle cylinders 6) rear suspension - diagnose the specific rattling component and replace that. Might be just a sway bar link. 7) resolve the abs light issue - brake switch sounds easy enough. 8) top replacement is a pain, so consider patch rather than full replacement. 9) strut replacement is a pain - if you have to do those, probably take it in. It’s a 20 year old car. Focus on the failed components and replace those. Almost all of the improvement will come from those repairs. That’s what I’d suggest. Make videos! Good luck.

I didn’t see it in person, but if I had to guess, I’d think what you saw in the oil filter was shaved metal due to normal(ish) engine wear, and plastic/rubberish gunk that might have been overdone silicone sealant applied previously to seal the valve cover gasket. If it goes away or largely clears up at the next oil change, I wouldn’t worry much. If it persists, revisit it. If I were in your shoes, I’d be cautiously optimistic, with eyes open.

What a great video, very informative and even entertaining. You have found yourself a very good indy mechanic and have a fine relationship with. I had an '04 Boxster S for a few years, really enjoyed it but sold it to a collector in Germany, I've been kicking myself ever since. I'm currently doing affordable restoration to a '03 911 996 C2 and I thought I'd share with you what I've done with my suspension. Because the 911 would clunk and rattle a bit over bumps I replaced the springs with stock European sport springs and Koni Special Active shocks. It now has a much better stance, handles a bit better and the suspension clunks and rattles are pretty much gone. I obtained these components from Carnewal in Belgium. Free shipping, but there is an import tax to be paid to the shipper. The other major upgrade is an air intake from Fabspeed, their Competition System, the inhale is amazing, boosted horses too. Down the road I may change out the stock exhaust when the Porsche piggy bank is a bit more healthy. Keep the vids coming. Happy Holidays

Jay, this is more accurately a post-purchase inspection since you've already bought the car. If this was a pre-purchase inspection, we would have told you to pass on this car after looking at the debris in the filter housing alone. Dropping the sump will probably reveal more wear debris. Didn't have time to watch the entire video because of work, but did they conduct a ECU inspection of camshaft deviations, rough running index, and fuel trim as well as a manometer reading?

Ball joint, brakes, and valve cover job would be my preference. I would not tackle the shocks/struts, as that involves compressing the spring, a somewhat danterious (imho) undertaking for a non-mechanic. I look at jobs to be done as whether or not I'll do them again, vs. once in the lifetime of the car. Those essentially once in the lifetime I'd leave to a mechanic, as anything I learn doing the job won't be needed for quiet awhile. You can save yourself THOUSANDS of dollars on the valve cover leak (probably the sparkplug tubes...next to nothing to replace if you DIY), the brakes ($500 if you use actual Porsche parts), and the suspension (you can get a Bilstein kit for ~$2500 other brands for even cheaper). Agreed. In fact, you probably have the remainder of the part under the bolt that is meant to hold it down. Recover that piece and temporarily glue it back in place (with the valance removed), then from the underneath side, lay a little fiber mat over the broken part (make sure it covers the broken part plus about 1 inch all around it), and mix a little 15 min epoxy and embed it into the fiberglass. If you don't have any fiberglass, you can use an old thin piece of a t-shirt. This will take about 1/2 hour total, and will save you the cost of a new valance. Ask me how I know...

Hi Jay, Happy New Year to you! my thoughts are your Boxster has a lot if not most of the issues they all get ! and same for 911 / 996 's/ 997's pre DFI or Turbo Engine. For this era of 911/Boxster the engines were basically troubled with Bore Score and IMS failures albeit a low percentage of cars, but if you are the unlucky one having to cough up £10k / £12k for a rebuild (thats why their cheap, risk factor giving a bad rep) then you always get a PDI check before you buy. Brakes, Suspension etc can all be fixed easily but it all adds up financially as you know. I realise you wanted a car with some faults otherwise your videos would be over in flash, well you have one now my friend. Was this a thorough check, ?? I cant agree sorry.. and as one reply already stated ... Borescope check and shinney particles in oil, you take off the sump and there's usually magnetic plug or plate in there and all metal swarf which is what it is will be stuck to it. Its normally IMS chewed up, metal bearings grinding swarf and plastic; and scoring your engine probably, it all has to pass through the engine! It needs fixing and it is and something to worry about, as how can it improve? IMS will need replacing just for peace of mind unless you know its been done. Leak is probably main seal, and your clutch is heavy... usually clutch is worn out... hence few reasons I don't think your check was thorough, and all these need sorting out. So my advice is replace, Clutch and main seal and upgrade IMS, first jobs and it would be be another £1500 in UK. At 73k miles your clutch will be done. unless its been replaced, but if it had you wouldn't have stiff pedal or shouldn't have? Last thing, where is the "Over Rev Report"?? it can tell you if car has been over revved and when and for how long, should be all logged by the car. Manuals get over revved! Tiptronic cant be over revved, it will change up. Another reason your check was not thorough enough. Looking at the oil filter this car has been neglected and you have medium to light bore scoring on some cylinders, which won't be terminal yet, (you'll know when you will get Piston Slap which is a knocking engine and blue smoke) and which can start at any mileage, but it wont improve either. If its been over revved a lot especially when cold this can also account for the bore scoring, but the scoring is consistent in these engines mainly how it happens, a lot start in cylinder 2 and go from there, but you could get another 10k, 20k, 40k miles. All Engines in all cars do wear of course, and a lot factors come into play. But Boxsters / 911's have a cheap design in materials of this era, Porsche cut corners as they were in financial trouble. A lot of cars are Sunday Cars to a lot of owners and have low mileage for thier age. Standing around does not suit them at all, best if they are driven with a bit of gusto every day. 911 996/997 Turbo engine has no bore score issues, Gen 2 DFI engines don't have these troubles, but are lot more expensive. Its just the earlier cars. if you want expert advice go to www.Hartech.org Best of luck with the car for the future.

Thanks for the full message, Steve! Appreciate that. Hey look, this car could blow up tomorrow, you’re right. Or it won’t. It very much depends on one’s attitude to risk and one’s time exposed to it. As it is, I won’t be staying with the car for long and, honestly, life is just too short to worry in minute detail about what can go wrong. If it does then it does! Sure, it could have been inspected more but one has to draw the line somewhere and actually the advice from the mechanic was more important to me. If he says that most cars of this age have oil with some shine to it then that’s good enough for me. There is probably little to nothing that can be done about it! The green gunge in the oil is a different thing, however, and I’ll be inspecting that again within 1k miles. Otherwise, I shall leave this car in a better state than I found it in, tell a few stories along the way on my channel, and let the next custodian have a rather easier ride than otherwise he / she would have. I believe a regular sign of IMS failure is bore scoring in cylinders 5 & 6. of bank 2. Your scoring is the opposite & as the mechanic said is likely a sign of age.
@deedoubleyatraining3 жыл бұрын
Scoring to 5 & 6 is due to design fault on thermostat, basically the furthest away cylinders end up overheated and unreported, this chokes the cylinder, wears the sleeve and basically shapes into a oval hence the scoring. 997 S suffers this the most as there is less metal in the block due to the bore diameter.

Checking bore scoring reminds me of prostrate exams. It's not just the process. After a certain age most will find something, but unless it is serious enough to have other symptoms, the costs of addressing it are most likely worse than the original issue. (I'm not a doctor, don't use this as a form of medical advice!) As far as the common idea of "it'll cost more to fix than it's worth", I don't think that is really a good gauge. Rather it is only a useful gauge if you are planning on selling the car as an investment. If you're aim is to drive and enjoy the car, the real gauge should be how much would it cost to buy comparable performance. So you could buy a few year old CPO Honda for about $18K, and you'll still have to pay for maintenance. Spending $5K on a $13K 986 will net you $18K for a Porsche. So $18K for the purchase and repairs of a 986 is not such a bad deal. The 986 will get you into Porsche events and corrals, not to mention waves from other Porsches on the road. The Civic? Meh.

Um,did he not drain the oil before he is doing a compression test? I don’t think that is wise, oil is for lubricant if which the oil pump will be starved of, also you check the piston skirt on the bottom and bore score there also, from the spark plug hole will give you minimum view of what your inspecting. Also first is all the covers come off to view the mechanical. That metal probably is main bearings and connecting rod bearings as quite possibly the low oil pressure light will come on probably within 10 more thousand miles, just changing out main bearings and con rod bearings plus vario cam tensioner guides and chain tension guides, plus oil pump gears and IMS chain tensioner guides will give you probably 100,000 more miles, granted you will have to take the engine out to do all that stuff, and if you do it yourself may cost $3,000 but you would likely be able to be trouble free for your lifetime of driving that and have peace of mind that you could even be really hard on it and know most of the weak links are a lot stronger now. 👍ps he probably put a filter and oil before he did those tests, I would hope. 😬

What about the black rubber debris in the oil filter might be excessive black RTV silicone gasket sealer?

Hey Dan! I’m thinking that it might be the spark plug tubes o-rings?

Jay, really enjoyed your videos on the new project. It will be interesting to see what you decide to do and what you decide give to the shop for completion. I can’t really give any more advice than what you have received already, but I say be bold and try many of the things yourself that are possible by watching some videos and buying or borrowing a few tools. Maybe even a friendly PCA local member may be willing to help out with one or two of the projects. Happy Holidays and Happier Motoring.

Definitely sump off, the o ring material is almost certainly from worn variocam pads. You need to sort the debris in the engine otherwise it’ll block an oil gallery and that will be expensive. Otherwise they are a great car, enjoy!

Thanks William!

You mean Variocam actuators? Chain pads are normally brown or black, and those will be what you would've seen if you'd removed the sump Jay 👍 Still an easy job if you collect your oil in a clean container, and it'll give you a chance to replace the cheap filter and check the new/old filter for debris again 😉

Yes that’s them. Probably worn at that mileage and can be done without dropping the engine

Yeah maybe. Remember though, I’m buying for different reasons than you. I’m trying to tell a story (badly you may very well argue!)

I would be very nervous about driving that car in its current condition. Yikes! Not from the scoring, which is normal, but from the amount of glitter and other stuff in the oil. You have to remove the transmission to do the RMS anyway, so I'd do an IMS pretty much immediately.

It’s not THAT bad…but I know what you mean! It’ll soon change though. Stay tuned!

Merry xmas. Great video. What oxygen codes are you getting? If its p1128 and p1130 you may have to check AOS. It is fairly common for this part to fail, it costed me 400 USD to get it fixed at an indy shop. If you happen to smell gasoline on startup with some white smoke then it’s good to also check fuel injectors as they are pretty common to fail too. My car had heating problem too. It would only heat at the highest and even at 85 it would yield cold air. Turns out it was just a faulty dashboard temperature sensor. On an all it doesn’t look very bad. Btw i have a rain forest green 986 too.

Sorry to say Jay but it looks like you will need to spend just as much sorting the car properly as you paid for it. The scoring issue is the most expensive problem you may have to deal with. Finally Jake Raby says compression and leak down tests are useless.
