You legend, cheers mate!! Na sorry so what I meant is you can buy the upgraded Brakeshaft WITH a NEW large cam gear usually so you don’t have to try get the old one off but that package is out of stock Australia wide so you can only buy the one WITHOUT a large cam gear included, therefore having to get the old one off and in some cases destroying it in the process, like this time, but I remembered I had Tyler’s laying around cause he COULD get one with the large cam gear included earlier in the year so didn’t need his old one, and his wasn’t seized so yeah sorry it was a lot to explain in the vid haha. But if you’re a machinist you’ll have to hit me up on Insta I have a few jobs for you haha 😂

I believe it’s for both brake shaft end float, so it only sits in one particular spot. But also those brass bushes have a habit of beginning to spin with the brake shaft and it retains it from falling into the housing and into the gears. That’s my understanding thanks for the comment mate!

Hey Timmy, I’ve priced to build a 8274 for roughly 4 grand (including purchase of winch), and a red winch cobra is $5200, I’ve been tossing up just saving for the red winch considering it’s on a little bit more and has everything I would do to a 8274 plus it’s brand new. I’d like to get your thoughts on the matter, the winch is going into a gu Ute setup for hard tracks Cheers mate

i love the sound of a highmount, hearing the high rpm and then getting hit with load and the ratchet brake is great. BUT i just dont see what attracts people with the warn. They are expensive new and expensive 2nd hand even in trash condition people want top $. Understand they can be fully rebuilt and such but its another cost on buying a 2nd hand one as most all need to be rebuilt. I guess it is a way to get into highmounts without spending the $ that redwinch or gigglepin want. But are they really worth the extra $ compared say just buying the new runva highmount or just a decent low mount? Not to mention the $ needed for power requirments, how many amps the 12v pull?
@timmyhasheart Жыл бұрын
I’m sort of 50/50 to be honest I have a red winch on order for my own car, which was $5000, and the winch in this video was $1000 for the core and then we spent about $1800 getting it to where it is in the video. To add air free is another $1000 so you’re pretty quickly at $4800. But I don’t think a brand new red winch is any better than having what we’ve built here, they’re both brand new to me. The perk for a red winch is a warranty, which is gonna be difficult to claim if you’re overvolting anyway, another perk is they run on grease and are very simple and have air brake and air free out the box, but a con is they’re not as easily changeable.. like I could get the red winch into the flats and it stalls cause I didn’t get the right gearing and then have to wind up double lining all all the nasty stuff and lose all the speed I’ve been working toward gaining - another con is you can’t listen to the ratchet to gauge load/if it’s stalling.. another con is the air brake, if you have total air failure you’ve lost your winch because the brake is permanently on without air. But if it were a warn then there are 1000 solutions, you could build it to a GP100 for twice the torque, you could go a twin speed, you could change the gearing all with just a few swings of a spanner. And with total air failure all you lose is your free spool and/or second gear. No matter what you do I think it’s a big investment and down to user preference for sure. 12 or 24 they both draw the same amps, anywhere from 300-400amp I think. It’s just at 12v your 300a is 3600w and at 24v your 300a is 7200w. But yeah it’s the same with a lot of things.. people want stupid money for the names they hear it’s just how it is. Cheers for the comment dude 👍🏻

good rebuild video. but in just under 40 years usage. at times very severe usage. my 8374, has never let me down. only thing is the free-spool pull, it likes to rust up. interesting use of buss bars. custom deal? or a off the shelf thing? i have stuck to custom built cables using welding cable and pure copper lugs, hyd crimped. i have heard about duel motors. but never seen the need. but then i run duel batteries on my jeep. stock sized alt.
@timmyhasheart Жыл бұрын
Na bus bars are pretty common these days for them, most big fast winches come factory with bus bars now. And yeah twin motors are common, cars are heavier these days, and a lot of people are running 24v and really fast gearing.

@timmyhasheart Жыл бұрын
I haven’t been around too many high mounts mate I’m quite green and 40% of my knowledge comes from people who know more than me, but I’ve seen 1 fail. I built a winch for my best mate and we just did a “stage one” to get it going, that had the stock brake and without the circlip retention the only other thing holding it in is that steel card with the dimples and so if that slips, then you get what happened to him which was the whole brake fell out the side of the winch then it’s game over, and that was up at the cape in palm creek, not ideal 👌🏻
@sullysshed Жыл бұрын

For someone of my mechanical calibre, they’re exactly the same thing. 😅 They’re only 1/19 pitch difference, I pretty much use them interchangeably, except if I’m going into the engine block then it’s always BSPT.

@@timmyhashearttrue, as an old school fitter and Turner apart from pitch there is not much difference fair enough, 5 degrees of thread angle difference apart from pitch between metric and imperial usually. I only have bspt and bspp and thought npt fittings would be hard to get 👍

What is the purpose of deleting the free spool?
@timmyhasheart11 ай бұрын
I haven’t yet come across an 8274 free spool that actually works and I’ve built about 5 or 6 of them. And it’s a flimsy little fork that holds the armature gear in mesh, they’re known for popping out and leaving you plummeting back down a hill. So if it doesn’t work & is dangerous then I personally get rid of it, and then I put air free spool in if you want free spool which pulls like butter, so much better 👍🏻👍🏻 thanks for watching mate

Keep it simple I reckon. Red winch, yes lots of features new, but spendy and as you say, parts are harder to get, eg motors etc. I use a STD high mount, original motor and it suits the shorty fine. Don't need rocket speed anyway, as you still have to wait for the slowest car/winch set up. Runva on 24v is impressive and very cost effective.
@timmyhasheart Жыл бұрын
Yeah you have a lot of good points and as I say, I’m 50/50, I have a red winch coming and I also have a built warn so when the time comes I’ll be able to say which I like better. However when I go up to Victoria with the race boys I’LL be the slowest haha, even with my single more red winch at 24v. Thanks for the comment mate appreciate it 👍🏻
