@@raze_6593 To be fair, Mars is very off the beaten path for where the story starts. It's cool if that's actually part of the story, though I do question how Ido knew about all that. Maybe they're worried about how much they can cram into the movies (assuming they get the support for sequels) because it's possible they may not get the chance to make them. So they're trying to include as much as they can just in case. In a way that's counterintuitive, since leaving mysteries for later movies to solve is one way to put in a sequel hook.

As for why. 90% of humanity died in a few months, iirc. The only people who still know how to build things live in space, and they couldn't give less of a shit about what happens on the planet. I remember reading the manga back in high school like 12 years ago. That cloud wall was explained at the end of one of the volumes. It’s a hydro electric wall or something like that. If someone tries going through it it’ll rip them to pieces. I hope I remembered that correctly. The manga is more descriptive and so much happens to Alita before she joins the sport. I had a feeling the movie wouldn’t be able to match up to it. They’re packing a whole prequel into a little movie. Also, also! I remember her being called octopus lips a few times in the manga so I was surprised they gave such emphasis to her eyes than her lips.

See - this is what I absolutely *hate* about comic/manga adaptations. They casually throw such things at the viewer without explaining _anything_ . How would anyone be able to tell that this misty crap is supposed to be water? And water at supersonic speed nonetheless. I really wish they would've taken just a little more time for proper world building. Films shouldn't require prior knowledge of their original source material in order to be understood.

Explanations also don't have to be delivered talking head-style - how about just zooming in to show attempt of someone or something coming into contact with the barrier so that the viewer at least gets a sense of they're dealing with. Showing me something doesn't help if I have no idea what I'm looking at. Especially when a main character with amnesia gives the perfect excuse to just throw in a half-sentence here and there to clear things up a little or at least give some hints.

The supersonic water wall is completely unrelated to the story, it’s just pretty background visuals. Alita _does_ need to breath, the brain needs oxygen. But probably not as much as normal humans, since it's just her brain. That's why she's able to keep the oxygen in, or "hold her breath", but since it's mechanical I wouldn't call it that. Also, you can't see bubbles coming out of her mouth or nose, since she's holding the carbon dioxide in(probably because the oxygen would escape if she tries to exhale it), and that is why when she gets out of the water onto the ship, she _exhales_ , as opposed to inhale, because she needs to get rid of that CO2. Also, no sin off for that perfectly used one-time-only F bomb? c'mon man :(

Yeah they did! The action scenes were great! Unlike some Marvel movies where the action is just a tangle of bodies and constant cutaways, the action in this movie actually flowed and you could SEE the fights it was really cool. Totally agree they crammed too much into one movie.

At first look they just tried to cram the whole Hugo-arc into one movie (which narratively makes sense and could have worked and still have been fullfilling action-wise, with the whole hunter warrior and Makaku/"Grewishka" stuff), but then added the Berserker body, dragged some of the Rollerball stuff into it early (Jashugan!...?) for the special effects and randomly gave Ido a wife and a daughter-backstory. I love the manga (for decades now...) and *did* enjoy the movie. It's close enough to make me happy (and soooo much better than that abysmal OVA we shall not talk about further) but some directorial decisions just left me scratching my head. Am very much looking forward to a sequel, though. The alterations may as well come together just fine. It's not the greatest movie, but one of the far better anime/manga adaptiations and still a pretty good movie with awesome action-sequences and impressive CGI, that will likely hold up for a few years. I'd still recommend anyone who even remotely enjoyed the movie to go and read the manga and then keep enjoying the movie for additional visual pleasure.

But he quickly changes track when she tells him she was found in the scrap yard and he realizes she must have come from Zalem. Then it is all about finding out all about zalem from her. Alita never asked about it. He introduces other Hunters in the bar and details distinct traits about them like how many kills, weapon(s) of choice, behavior, etc. Alita should've pulled a Drax and took Zapan's sword after kicking his @$$. "You do not deserve such a weapon. I'm keeping it."
