Jeremy criticizing Duncan's ability to outlast an onslaught of 12 men just further proves he has no understanding of subtext. We literally know by now that the Emperor has betrayed Atreides via the Harkonnen. Now, we're seeing *why.* If you have a military force made up of men who can handle small platoons, led by a charismatic leader who they will gladly lay down their lives for, that would be a massive threat to your rule. @@mrcheesemunch And in Dune 2, he casually mentions how he and a ragtag group of (presumably) other survivors have been taking advantage of the Harkonnen's failure to procure spice to smuggle it for exorbitant prices. And when he kills Rabban, he does so proclaiming vengeance for his lord Leto. The Atreides soldiers are so loyal they will survive ambushes and do whatever they can to ensure they plant a knife in the chest of those that wronged their leader. Loyalty that strong is dangerous to a dictator.
@XYZ-zn6qz10 ай бұрын
That actually isn't really true. Duncan is a Ginaz Swordmaster a group of highly skilled fighters that are considered superior even to the Saraukar but he's not the only one. Pretty much every major house employs a Ginaz swordmaster often as teachers for their troops and as protection from attackers. So while Duncaan is extremely good he isn't neccessarily the best in the galaxy or really all too special in the grand scheme of things

Remember the Baron surviving the poison attack, possibly because he was shielded and didn't get as big a dose from it? What a clown.

@19:53 the criticism of movie coreographies of enemies showing up for one on one combat and not immediately ganging up on one person is so old and tired. Anyone that has practiced any kind of martial arts knows that, even if it's many people vs one, you don't approach all at once. It's one thing in a street fight with randos, but pros would absolutely not do it. You're getting inside the range of your allies and getting in the way of their attacks, you're struggling for the same space, increasing the chances the two of you are going to do shit out of sync and hurt each other. At most around 4 people against 1 is plausible, and is usually the most a fight scene will play with very quickly to show the difference in ability; and the best scenario is usually a pincer move, which the coreographies, including the one shown, do; unless what you're asking for is for every henchman to be insane and mow down their own allies to get 1 hit in. Most people that coreograph fights are competent fighters themselves and know how stupid it would be in a movie that isn't trying to be anime levels of over the top.
@mrcheesemunch10 ай бұрын
Not to mention the Sardaukar are extremely skilled warriors that love their craft, it would obviously be seen as cowardly to gang up on someone rather than fight them one on one, the fact that they HAVE to in order to beat Duncan is a testament to his skill.

If you guys like the space opera genre, might I humbly suggest you check out the classic "Lensman" series by E. E. "Doc" Smith. It was Smith who pretty much created all the common tropes you find in modern day space opera. One could say he practically invented the genre. I consider him the Tolkien of space opera. Dune has a LOT to thank Doc for, since he did it first. They were published originally in the pulp magazines of the 30s-40s, but you can read them in book form today. There are prequels he released after the main four books, but the saga proper begins with Galactic Patrol, followed by Gray Lensman, then Second-Stage Lensman, and then Children of the Lens. Doc was the first to introduce FTL drives (called the Bergenholm inertialess space drive), deflector screens and force fields (called "defensive screens" in the novels), wormholes ("hyper-spatial tubes"), antimatter bombs (negaspheres), galaxy-wide empires, space police, millenia long genetic breeding programs, highly detailed psychic combat (the Lens gives its wearers insanely powerful psionic powers, among other unique abilities), spaceship combat on a scale that is unparralled, planet-destroying super-weapons (the Death Star has NOTHING on the Sunbeam), benevolent alien benefactors, space gangsters, pirates, asteroid miners, TRULY alien aliens, and a rip-roaring sense of adventure that begins immediately and does not stop until the last chapter of the last book. We wouldn't even half of modern space opera tropes were it not for Doc Smith. The dialogue is cheesy in places, but appropriate for the era---I find it charming. The tech is charming, also. One of the secret steatlh spaceships runs on diesel fuel, and I do believe someone creates space armor made of asbestos. You have to remember it was written in the 1930s and 1940s. But you can't call yourself a space opera fan if you haven't even at least checked out the Lensman saga. It's like telling people you're a fan of the fantasy genre but have never read Tolkien. You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at lease see if what I'm saying is true. Edited to add: the Lensman anime is an abomination that has literally zero to do with anything in any of the books. It is not an adaptation of the story by any means. The only things that carry over from the books into the anime are character names, and that is literally it. The similarities end there.

The biggest criticism that this movie gets is that it's incomplete, and I hate that criticism because of course it's incomplete, it's in the name, "Dune: Part One". If I watched only the first 90 minutes of Oppenheimer and then posted on reddit about how the story doesn't feel finished at the haflway mark, everyone would think I'm insane, and rightly so. The only reason it was realesed as two parts is because theaters don't want to screen 5 hour movies, not because they are actually two seperate films.

@@Th3Birdman Then I guess I personally don't mind the wide dynamic range of sound in film, I find it necessary especially in a big action blockbuster like Dune. I wasn't arguing with you or the many who feel that way, was just asking to know more. You haven't *really* given legitimate reasons other than saying it's just bad, but I still respect your very prompt and thought out responses (no matter if they are slightly condescending, I know it's kinda your thing lmao)

I did give you a legitimate reason. In fact, I gave you multiple, but apparently you didn't click any of the links I provided. I said what the issue was: an extremely wide dynamic range. This means that dialogue will be too quiet and action scenes will be far too loud. This means that in scenes where there is action AND dialogue, you will not be able to hear the dialogue, which is what every link I sent you said. I noted that in my own review of this film: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZKuk32aqZx0d80si=K_vDPvZYiWeRC_Qv&t=413 Christopher Nolan has this exact same issue, and he explained he does it on purpose, because he doesn't think not being able to hear dialogue in his films is a big deal, which is a strange thing to say considering the majority of his films are dialogue heavy.

I love cinema sins a lot, but when they chose to be ignorant at 6:08 on the shields, I clicked off immediately. Either be honest in your breakdowns, or don't talk to me...
