One answer: Deteronomy basically means “second telling.” Much how Genesis was a combination of two different origin stories (from different sources), Deuteronomy is a second telling of the events of Leviticus and Numbers from a different source which some redactor in ancient times combined with the rest of the books that became the Torah. Essentially, it’s fan fiction that became accepted canon. :) We should celebrate reaching this book with deuteropoukámiso or “second shirt.”

Ah, yes! I've been waiting for this. Deuteronomy is one of my 3 favorite books in the protestant bible, along with psalms and habakkuk. (On the chapter level, i'd have to include exodus 15 and judges 5.) I especially like the poetic chapters of deuteronomy 32 and 33. Although the whole book of deuteronomy has a poetic feel. However, my opinion of deuteronomy has declined, since learning that not only is it modeled on royal assyrian vassel treaties, but that it was crafted to act as pro-josiah propaganda. Also it and much of the rest of the bible are revisionist, misrepresenting authentic israelite religion, trying to say it was less polytheistic than it was. (Though traces of polytheism survive even within deuteronomy.) Deuteronomy in particular insists on sacrifice only at one location, whereas the rest of the bible was fine with local altars.

The nature of this book as an ancient fraud is so obvious... the bible story book I read as a kid had a picture of priests "finding" the scroll in an old chest and I thought "they just wrote that" immediately. Not really related, but whatever. I have a question for Hemant: will you also cover the deuterocanonical books ? They are books considered canon and part of the Bible by the "old" churches (Catholic, Eastern/Oriental Orthodox, Assyrian, and so on) but not by Protestants. In other words, which version of the Bible are you using for this series ? There hadn't been substantial differences until now (that I noticed).

The Old Testament contains a total of 929 chapters. Add in 260 from the New Testament, and you get a total of 1,189. So the last chapter of Revelations should be podcast on November 16, 2043. As an atheist ex-christian, i still like and am fascinated by deuteronomy, as well as other poetic parts of the bible, like psalms and habakkuk. But in terms of philosophy that atheists can actually agree with, i suggest ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes specifically argues against the afterlife. A live dog is better than a dead lion. And a good human and a bad human have the same fate. Enjoy life while you have it.

But if you read "the bible unearthed" by israel finkelstein, it seems the geographical descriptions, including the references to kadesh barnea, are correct and would make sense to 7th century bc judeans. (Edit: i mean correct for the 7th century, in the iron age, when much of the bible was written. Not correct for the 13th century, in the bronze age, when the exodus supposedly occurred.)

A later book in the Tanach all but confirms this "book" was written by priests wanting to have a reform of worship to benefit their own pockets. This is a very influential book when it comes to today's mainstream Judaism, and as far as I know also when Jesus was supposdly alive, so also very influential on early Christianity. Also, regarding coming to Moses to ask about very mundane things - well yes, this is 100% hoe Orthodox Judaism is practiced today. Whenever you are unsure of what is the right thing to do, even for something as little as "can I borrow my friend's lawnmower if he uses it mostly on Shabath", you should go to "your Rabbi" (cause everyone can have their own Rabbi say whatever the hell they want), to find out what is the right Jewish thing to do.

Much love to you brother, but this is not an astute breakdown of any inaccuracies or fallacies in the first chapter of the book of Deuteronomy. It's just a series of contextually narrow and uninformed personal interpretations on a few parts of Moses' speech to the Israelites prior to their conquering of Canaan. Not to mention the leaving out of key details in some cases (e.g. the Canaanites were child sacrificers amongst other things and had been given centuries to repent). Rather than do this hypercritical reading of the Bible, I suggest you approach the Word of God with the respect it deserves. You'll be pleasantly surprised with what an honest and intentional analysis can reveal to you.

The traveling in a cloud by day and fire by night description seems to suggest a volcano, which combined with the metallurgy reminded me of this: Hephaestus is the Greek god of blacksmiths, metalworking, carpenters, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metallurgy, fire, and volcanoes. Hephaestus's Roman counterpart is Vulcan.

I think yahweh is a storm god. You can see it in exodus 15, judges 5, psalm 18, psalm 83:15; habakkuk 3. He rides the clouds, as in psalm 104:3. As a storm god, his ancient enemy was the chaotic sea monster leviathan. (Psalm 74.) Compare thor with jormungander, marduk with tiamat, etc. Of course, the volcano symbolism is there also. It should be pointed out that yahweh "became" king, as in psalm 97, which suggests he wasn't always king.

If Moses, with the help of the invisible magic sky wizard, can't manage a few hundred thousand people by himself, then how is god supposed to be able to run the world? Also, he's not all powerful if he's can't do it...and this passage makes the buy-bull a liar when it says, 'With god all things are possible'...apparently not everything is possible...

I'm just trying to form a mental picture of Moses speaking to ALL of the Israelites at once. Did he have them all pack into a huge amphitheater, or did he at least a really good public address system? I'm imagining a gathering of people that would basically fill most if not all of the current NFL stadiums at the same time, and one guy trying to speak loud enough for all of them to hear him. So yeah, something just doesn't add up for me from the get-go of this book.

Oh my God! I am a Christian and I am so shocked to hear you ask all these questions; are all videos like this one? The fact that you are asking all these questions shows that “you are thirsty”, your soul or spirit WANTS to know about all these things, you need the Holy-Spirit! The Holy-Spirit is the spirit of God, and you can receive it if you accept Jesus-Christ as your Lord and saviour; the Holy-Spirit will open your understanding and you will be able to understand all these “codes” or scriptures; note that there are signs that will show (or confirm) that you have received the Holy-Spirit and usually, for many people, speaking in tongues has been the first sign, and once it is confirmed that you have received the Holy-Spirit, then you will start your journey with God, and that is when other people ( your friends and relatives) start labelling you as “crazy” because you now start seeing and understanding “reality”. You can never understand the Bible by reading it literally like you are doing, you need the Holy-Spirit inside your body and you will be able to understand when you read. God sent messages to his humans through the Bible and because he knew that the devil would try and stop humans from receiving and understanding the messages, he “coded” the messages and they can only be understood through the Holy-Spirit who is “the TEACHER and GUIDE “, and that is why, though we live together on earth, I am (spiritually) in heaven and (believe me), you’re in hell!! if you die right now in that state, you will find yourself in the middle of fire (hell-fire) and you will not understand what is going on; me on the other hand, if I die right now, I will wake up in a heavenly paradise because I am sealed with the Holy-Spirit. But meanwhile, we can meet and greet each other in the street, and you can carry on moving your soul deep in hell-fire as you are doing. Many people wake up in hell, and there’s no way they can come back to warn others....

Christians believe that God freed the Israelites from slavery, yet allowed multitudes to be born into slavery and die as slaves in the antebellum American South. They believe that God parted the Red Sea, but refrained from holding back the waters when an Indonesian tsunami killed a quarter of a million people in 2004. God provided manna from Heaven, so the story goes, but does nothing to prevent the deaths of over 40,000 people around the world who starve every single day, nor anything to alleviate the hunger pains and malnutrition that the starving face throughout their short lives. God is said to have made an axe head to float, yet allowed the Titanic to sink. He is said to have added 15 years to King Hezekiah’s life, but does nothing for children whose lives are cut short by leukemia. God allegedly restored sanity to Nebuchadnezzar, but does nothing for those suffering from schizophrenia and dementia today. While alive Jesus is said to have healed the sick, but does nothing today to stop pandemics which have destroyed whole populations of people. This point should not be lightly dismissed because it points out the fact that if the Biblical accounts are true, then God must be callously insensitive to human suffering and quite inconsistent in the way he bestows his grace. And that inconsistency applies to the Israelites themselves who suffered enormous hardships and tragedies after the times that are described in the Bible. It should be obvious that the most likely explanation for this disconnect is to question the truth of the Biblical stories.
