The wrongest? The most wrong thing is the fact that people follow this book and use it as a code of morality.
@AnnoyingNewsletters
@AnnoyingNewsletters Жыл бұрын
Or, even worse, they use it as a book of morality while simultaneously denying that the Old Testament applies, something, something new covenant. The new covenant is love thy neighbor, right? Then why tf do you turn to the Old Testament to justify hating so many people for actions that you find icky, when even it's telling *you* not to do it, not force everyone else comply.

I've quoted Deuteronomy 22: 28-29 many times as a reason to reject biblical morality. There is no justification for forcing a rape victim to marry her rapist. The excuse I keep hearing is "that's just how it was back then," but try telling the woman who was raped that she deserves to suffer even more than she already has because "that's just how it is." Just because the culture of the time treated women as mindless doesn't make them actually mindless. They had feelings that their culture ignored, and they were traumatized in ways that their culture didn't care about. There is no justification for that.

A man is not to wear women's clothing and a woman is not to wear men's clothing. Ok, fair enough, but I would just ask of all the married couples out there - how many men have come home to find their wife wearing one of his t-shirts? Maybe my marriage is different to most but my wife 'borrowed' my t-shirts fairly regularly. In a bizarre twist I never felt the need to stone her to death for this indiscretion.

@Albert Giesbrecht i'm an atheist now, but i was raised christian, as one of jehovah's witnesses. Like many christians, they try to harmonize the protestant bible, to make it all fit. This requires cognative dissonance, but it is possible, and jehovah's witnesses (at least pre-2013, and prior to dropping antitypes) did a fairly good job of it. Based on that, they think because israel broke the law and rejected jesus, that the law ended when jesus died, replaced by the new covenant. Something about the law being nailed to the stake, and jesus being the fulfiment of the law. So, the law was pefect at the time, but replaced by something better, a new law written on hearts instead of stone. (P.s. jehovah's witnesses changed a lot, particularly around 2013, and they're not the same religion anymore that i was raised in. Antitypes were fundamental to their doctrinal system, and repudiating antitypes leaves their doctrinal system broken. Prior to that, it was flawed, but mostly coherent.)
@qbasicmichael
@qbasicmichael Жыл бұрын
Galatians 2:16,21; 3:11-12,21,24-25; Romans 3:20-21; I thought paul said somewhere that the law was impossible to follow. I can't find him explicitly saying that, but he seems to imply it in galatians 3:10; romans 7; etc. Deuteronomy 30:11; 32:47; Psalm 119:89,142,144,152,160 And yes, deuteronomy is obviously talking about a long but finite human life in the promised land, as opposed to the eternal life, whether in heaven or on paradise earth, that christians want. But those are shifting expectations. And deuteronomy is talking about national salvation more than individual salvation. But it doesn't negate that deuteronomy promises righteousness, salvation, and life for obedience. Christianity took old testament promises, and personalized them. (Although, within the ot, daniel also promised an afterlife. But daniel also tied righteousness to keeping the covenant and law.) Also, deuteronomy contains no termination clause. It predicts that israel will disobey, but that a remnant will return, and obey again. Are christians supposed to replace israel, or join israel? "The sum of thy word is truth; And every one of thy righteous ordinances endureth for ever."

3:24 I can *imagine* situations where “God hates it” would be a good reason for avoiding something. Like, if most of the Bible were different and God had a track record where every time it says He hates something and then we later learn more about that thing, it turns out the thing was *actually bad* in a non-obvious way. If God hated eating or doing medicine without washing your hands with soap, and miscellaneous things that turned out to be carcinogens, and cattle that exhibited [mad cow disease symptoms], then Iʼd be willing to tentatively take His word for it that crossdressing were also Bad Somehow. Unfortunately for Him, His track record is not that good.

"Do not inhale the smoke of tobacco leaves" or the like would make for a much more convincing 'divinely inspired' law than "mixed fabrics are evil!" The only time the god of Abraham has an even vaguely good idea for a rule, it turns out a previous culture in the region had already thought of it.

@elvisdoeskfc

Since many roofs in the Middle East are flat (not much rain to shed), people would use them somewhat like balconies or decks are used today - for parties, sleeping or even to store stuff. Obviously, modern builders put safety railings around balconies and desks and for the same reason ancient Israel was told to do it; therefore, modern builders are obeying the spirit of Dt. 22:8.

Like many early forms of currency, shekels were weight-based. There's some variation in weights, though. So while the most likely values seem to be 10.5 to 11.5 grams, I'll round up to 12g. So fifty shekels = 600g of silver. Current price of silver: about $0.78 per gram. Again, I'll round up, to $0.80. Fifty shekels = $480 That's the Biblical value of a woman.

PS2: Oh, this is also why Mother Mary went to stay with her sister for three months. By the precedent of that one part, where it talks about a woman pledged to e married who sleeps with another guy, she could have been stoned to death. But Joseph was a stand-up guy, as it turns out, and let her off the hook, even if Jesus WAS born of an extra-marital affair. Personally, I think the historical Jesus was Joseph's kid, since he had three younger brothers, but Joseph didn't want Mary dead, so HE sent her to stay away for a bit.

@@Daniel-cz7kd, I'm talking about the historical Jesus versus the Biblical Jesus: those are two different things. For the sake of the mythology in the story, Mary would have gone to see Elizabeth BOTH to help her while pregnant with John, AND to cover up her own supposed "crime". Historically, it's likely that that didn't happen: Jesus was the eldest of four brothers, and we even know their names: Jesus, Joseph, Judas (not that Judas), and James (THAT James: the youngest Apostle).

Thousands of years ago when this was written, the people might have known why the rule about mixed fibers existed. This is the problem with dogmatically following a rules set down thousands of years ago for a culture that doesn’t even exist anymore. All context is lost. You’re just trying to follow rules that have no context or relevance. Even worse, you basing your life on questionable translations of ancient languages. (Not that these rules were that great in their own era. It was a rough time and the value of human life was low. But at least they probably understood why.)

Picture rural, sparsely populated, ancient Israel. A teenage boy from a farm meets a girl from a nearby farm in the tiny village. They get it on and they get caught. The boy (or his family) pays bride price to the girl's father and marries his sweetheart. Everybody's happy. Might not always be that bad. Just sayin'.

Wait... who decided two people can't move a couch up or down stairs? LOL, do you only know weak people, or have you only owned extra-heavy couches? I'm not even a guy, and I've moved a couch with just one other person. 😄

Hemant or friendly atheist “Can we please have a regular chapter?”, “I cannot deal with the slavery and murder.” Hemant this is the book that was written, different language, people and so forth, if it’s such a big deal for you, either learn and study with teachers who understand the Bible or find something else, I don’t remember anyone forcing you to read a chapter every week. “I mean two people can’t move a couch from the second story of a house.” Wow Hemant, you really make your guys weak. “Wear what you want. I don’t care. You shouldn’t either.” Wait a minute Hemant, “I don’t care. You shouldn’t either.”? Whether you care or not, where do YOU come off saying who shouldn’t either? “But who cares?” Well apparently YOU and perhaps others with you, otherwise you wouldn’t be trying to explain it as you’ve explained other parts incorrectly and ignorantly. “I would love to answer those questions, but we are moving on to something completely different.” Or you simply have no knowledge or understanding of your own questions and you move on to save face😏 Interesting Hemant, “can we just let it slide when people have a consensual affair?”, “They’re having fun.”, “She deserves some pleasure.” “Let her have some fun.” Would you also ‘just let it slide’ and ‘Let her have some fun.’ if your wife had sex with another man? “Every single one of you watching this is more moral than the Bible.” Hemant, that’s not only a lie, it’s unjustly stupid and ignorant.

I thought the bible was a book written by people writing what the biblical god told them. Now all of a sudden it's just a book written by people of different language and culture as if no biblical god was instructing them. Which is it?

It's fascinating to me that you spend so much time watching a video so you can pick out every little phrase (and joke..) to critique, but at no point does it sound like you actually listened to anything being read from your "divinely inspired" book. Why is it that you're so interested in criticizing Hemant's commentary but you're totally unwilling to think critically about the book he's commenting on? You can think whatever you want about Hemant - you're more than welcome to your opinion - but why not give that same level of consideration to the problematic and truly harmful rhetoric of the Bible? If the best argument you have against someone sharing that the Bible is harmful and seriously amoral is "you made a joke I didn't like", that's... not terribly persuasive for your point of view, to say the least.

I disagree with your comments that "drag never hurts no one" so you believe it is ok to shove this crap down the throats of innocent children. I am a devout Atheist and have been for many years. I genuinely love the work you do but please keep Trump out of it and drag queens and transgenderism. There is no need for all the politics. I am a republican atheist. Doesn't sound like there is very many of us.

I'm an atheist libertarian. I believe whole heartedly in free speech and utterly oppose government censorship. Let people do what they want. Like jefferson said, my neighbor believing there are 20 gods or no god does not hurt my wallet or break my bones. Same with my neighbor wearing a dress. It's stupid, but harmless. Kids will see things, and parents can teach them. No censorship, ever. Book bans are anathema to the liberal enlightenment on which this nation is founded.

And why shouldn’t children be entertained by drag performances and why shouldn’t they learn that trans people exist? What harm could that possibly cause them? There are very few Republican atheists because Republicans seem to be totally divorced from reality. The vast majority of Republicans believe that the previous election was stolen from them and that their insurrection was just a peaceful tour of a public building.
