I was raised Catholic. My parents are both in their 70s and have been lifelong churchgoers, and when I share info like this from the bible with them, it's as if they have never heard a single actual verse from the Bible. Clearly priests only stick to a certain "flavor" of sermon and never steer away from those, otherwise people would sit back and say "hey, wtf is going on here!" more often, lol. It's amazing that in 60 years of going to church, they only know a minuscule amount of what the book actually teaches.

@David Watson if there was a real god everyone on the planet would instinctively believe and worship it. The fact that children have to be taught about and indoctrinated into believing a specific god shows that those beliefs are not universal around the planet. If it’s not universal to everyone how can it be the one true god? The Bible is a fascinating collection of stories written by the people to document historical events and legitimizing their actions by lacing in a god to make them less mundane. Plus the book has lists of rules for their people to follow to make them distinct from their geographical neighbors. Plus throughout the Book of Genesis god keeps referring to himself as the god of bethel, very specific as if to distinguish himself from the other gods of the area... in “his own words” admitting he’s not the only god. So why should I pay money to a church for them to tell me about the god of bethel when I could just as easily pay money to a rabbi and learn about jahova... it’s the same dude right?

I used to think a flat-tax was a good idea... when I was in middle school. Also, there's a hypothesis that there was a mistranslation of both the incense and anointing oil recipies and that they're actually being made with marijuana. The supporting evidence being that the offending ingredient isn't actually native to the area, and that the original word has historically been used to refer to marijuana, which was native. In that light, all of this "Don't keep any for yourselves" makes a lot more sense, especially since the priests would have been on it, and associating the effects with religious experiences and inspired revelation intended only for the clergy. Really they were just high off their asses. This hypothesis also fits in with what we know about the early religious practices of communities all over the world; drugs played a significant factor in religious rituals all across the globe.

This is some weird shit. What is the point of people knowing this stuff? Love your wry sense of humor, Hemant. It at least makes it entertaining.
@visaman3 жыл бұрын
Back then it was important to know it. Now, it's like a history lesson. Why do people collect ancient coins or stamps? Because it is facinating.
@KeriRautenkranz3 жыл бұрын
Weird shit indeed! Unfortunately, it is necessary to know this stuff because a great many gullible people believe it without knowing the first thing about it. Great numbers of misled people can cause great harm, so....

1. Drink offerings, called "libation", were very common with the Pagan gods, and, at least back in the Vedic Age, even with the Hindu Gods. Nowadays in Hinduism, alcohol is considered ritually impure, but way back when, in 1500-1100BCE, Indra especially was said to prefer libation. Nowadays he's only the god of storms, but in Vedic times, he was considered the king of the Gods. 2. You see here the origin of Pesach being a yearly ritual, though, eh, and not just a one-time thing in Egypt. It's why Christians stopped giving burnt offerings, though: Jesus is considered their Pascal Lamb, so in Christianity, God is thought not to want or require the blood of an animal, at least in MOST Christian sects. So, for them, the literal human blood sacrifice (ew) is good enough, but for the Jess, there still does remain the tradition of the Pascal Lamb and the scapegoat. At least with the goat, they can live on almost anything, so it's not guaranteed an immediate death when they end it out into the wilderness. I don't know how this is done in urban America, though, since the highest concentration of Jews in the world live, I believe, in New York State. Someone in the know inform me: do people drive out a goat in the city...? 3. Why does God suddenly need money...? I mean, I know Abraham offered God a PRETTY tidy sum when 'he" came down to Earth to talk to him, but seriously, what would an omnipotent God do with money? I've never understood this. By which I mean I understand this perfectly, and it's for the enrichment of the church. Vow of poverty my ass: the Catholic church is among the richest institutions in the world. I know this is pre-Catholicism,, but the same principle holds true. 4. In the literal sense, people can die if they don't wash. Actually, way back in the Bubonic Plague days, Jews and Muslims died at a lower rate than Christians in Europe because they had these ritualistic washings. This was WAY before Germ Theory, but obviously it still worked. It's kind of one of the reasons why Christians hated both groups: they believed the other two had some kind of magic that kept them safe, and if it's not Christian magic (i.e. transubstantiation an so forth...), it must be EVIL magic, see. 5. Wait, what? I'm ALMOST positive cinnamon originated in India. Where the HELL are they getting all this stuff in the middle of the Sahara Desert?! Are they even still in the desert at this point, or did I miss something?
@visaman3 жыл бұрын
The Sahara desert is in Africa. Moses was in the Sinai Desert. Arabians held a monopoly in Cinnamon trading for 3000 years (1500BC - 1500AD) at the great city of Constantinople and supplied to Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians. Herodotus (484BC-425BC) records about the crafty marketing techniques of Arabians, keeping the origin of cinnamon a safe secret

And remember, this is all during a time when they are relatively newly-freed slaves wandering a desert, not encountering any other tribes where they can trade for money or where they can do metalsmithing. Nor are they farming (because, hey, they're wandering in a desert) for olive plants for making olive oil. How did they get all this stuff? Must be a miracle.

Don't worship a golden calf, worship a golden box with a golden table set in front of it, both of which are decorated in so much gold you wouldn't believe it. Use the money to help those in need, you say? No, way. We're the ones in need - of gold. And a lot of perfume, apparently. And animal sacrifices because God loves blood. Also, collect money for God, who definitely needs something humanity created and brings about a ton of sins like the ones the laws in the golden box warn us all about.

I just noticed something. This (and I'd have to see how far back it started) all boils down to a kind of witchcraft on behalf of god. The ritual, stand in a certain spot, do a certain thing. Chant (sorry pray) in a certain way.
@visaman3 жыл бұрын
The Orthodox Churches still do these things today, minus, the animal sacrificing. Ultra Orthodox Jews want to bring back the animal sacrifices in a new temple. It was only considered Witchcraft if a woman did it.

Maybe slaughtering the locals and stealing all their belongings? As the hebrew war god has expensive tastes, it must have been a very large and wealthy but poorly defended population…
