Po's (bio) father is a way more massacred character. He was the one to fight off Shen's genocide, ensure his people survive against overwhelming odds, lead pandas to safety and prosperity, and then participate in the defense of the panda village against even more overwhelming odds in the forces of General Kai. And this movie has a running gag that he is now apparently a coward.

Honestly her backstory could have been an animal hierarchy like, "People like you aren't meant to be fighters." It could show real world themes of Racism and races being unfairly treated. It could make her character have a more emotional and realistic level that people can relate to. She and Po would have shared the fact that they were both underestimated but overcame it. So instead The Chameleon (insert actual name) would want the staff to free the world from hierarchy, give any species the right to learn kung fu. Po would sympathize with her causing a great fold in their characters. The Chameleon steals the staff to steal everyone's kung fu so she can release it into the minds of every creature on earth. Po would defeat her and The Chameleon would be absolutely obliterated by Mr Ping.

I’d like to add one The Chameleon’s first impression sucks, especially compared to the other villains in this franchise. What do I mean by this? Let’s go through a roll call. Tai Lung: escapes a said-to-be-impossible-to-escape-from prison with ease. Shen: kills a master who’s also a rhino. Kai: defeated Oogway after beating every Kung fu master in the Spirit Realm. The Chameleon: kicks someone down the stairs…wow, soooo menacing. (God, the Chameleon sucked so freaking much)

She does not need to kill or beat anyone up. What she needs to do however is steal iron from the mines to build her cages and lure Po here to steal the Staff.

Okay im going to say this at least once now: the reason why Kung Fu panda 4 wasnt as great as the last three is cause, okay im not sure if i got this right, but whoever decided to do the film was kind of forced to rush through it instead of having the plot which she wanted to do flesh out more. And you can tell in the story itself. The chameleon and Zhen were going to have more of a detailed background but majority of that was cut. Plus, the Furious Five were going to show up, majority of return villains were gonna have more lines and more scenes; but again most of that was cut out

Scrap the character of Zhen entirely.

True! When I first watched it I was so disappointed that the nostalgia factor isn’t being fully embraced. The absence of the Furious Five really takes away from the magic that made the earlier movies so great. It’s a shame that bringing them back wasn’t prioritized, even if it meant a higher budget. 2:19

About the tree nut not growing inside a pocket, I have a counter argument. At some point during a shift I was working at a grocery store, a small clove of a garlic fell. I picked it up and put it in my pocket to throw away later, I forgot about it for 3-ish weeks and when I remembered it and took it out, it had started to sprout in my dark, dry, but warm pocket. I don’t know how, but it did; so -1 sin for pocket plants!

I don't want to defend this movie, but at 16:01 when you said "why didn't the chameleon teach Zhen the 3rd rule" I just wanted to say that it's most likely because there wasn't actually a third rule and the Chameleon said it to her then because she felt like Zhen was losing faith to the Chameleons' cause. Or there was the third rule but the Chemeleon never had to tell Zhen about it because Zhen never did anything that required the Chameleon to educate her on the rule. I mean if someone never eats too much candy you wouldn't have to say "don't eat too much candy" right?

Honestly, this movie is fine. Is it as good as the other three Kung Fu Panda movies? No. But it's still funny, well-animated, reasonably creative, and has some nice messages for kids AND adults to chew on. So for the weakest movie in a film quadrilogy to still be reasonably good, that says alot about how AWESOME the other three movies really are.

The chameleon's story kinda makes sense if you think about it. In secrets of the furious five, Crane also wasn't allowed to train and instead had to work as a janitor. So maybe the dojo she went to had a height minimum. It would've worked better if they had shown her backstory in a flashback.

Tai Lung: groomed and trained his entire life for a single role, only to be told that the role was meant for someone else. Shen: committed genocide to try and forestall a prophecy of his destruction, and was disowned by his family. Kai: was betrayed by the person he loved as a brother, was banished to the spirit realm, and all memory of him in the living world died. Chameleon: too small for school.
