Not to mention that by refreshing this car you're avoiding car payments while also avoiding all of the unnecessary electronics and modules ($$$$$) of current models. We have (2) vehicles over 10 years old that are both in great shape for their model year/age. I like Subarus and I'm on your side in this one.

I couldn't count how many times people have told me to buy a new car instead of maintaining my old Forester. But I hate loans and to me its living within my means. If a problem starts to emerge I start saving, then when I've got the money I get it fixed. And its a good vehicle.

I have a 2009 Subaru outback, that I keep in pretty good shape! Last year I replaced the struts with KYB struts, the springs with rallitek springs....rides like a dream....
@joemikey278
@joemikey278 4 жыл бұрын
jomax clux Great question! It’s hard to say because I replace both springs and struts at the same time. If you carry a lot of weight in the back, replacing the springs is a good idea. I bought RALLITEK Springs, The front springs are about 10% to 15% stiffer than the OEM. They’re the same height, and don’t lift the front at all. The same with the back, however you have to get a minimum of 0.5 inch lift compared to OEM. So I got those. Much better when carrying cargo. The KYB struts probably provided the best bang for the buck. My outback looks much better, and does not sag in in the back like it did before from carrying 12 years of Carrying 100+ pounds in the back of the outback. I really like the improvement, and I’ll hopefully be driving the car for another 8 to 10 years. Again, it’s hard to say, because I installed both at the same time springs and struts. But from different forums, most people feel that struts provided the best bang for the buck with a more modest improvement in Springs. I really research this, but everyone’s different, The outback handles much better, and has a bit more sporty ride with less lean in the corners, with the changes, it’s still a very comfortable ride,so I hope it helps……
@bbodan5393

Probably the only way to want to choose what you like, would be ride in a car that did that. Suspension preference is very subjective. It can also be a rabbit hole with money. OEM dampers are valved for OEM springs, and even the helper is matched with the strut. Most aftermarket springs sell on raising/lowering (it just sells). And yes, that raises or lowers the clearance, which will change the stroke of the strut. High end struts can be revalved to match spring rates. You can build your own springs, to match a particular strut. Some struts (not talking about coilovers) can adjust damping, on a twin tube design. This video was great because all those bushings are very important too. Most people don't even look at the back. There is no right answer, just make an educated decision.

Took my 2000 Forester to the dealer for the transmission o ring to be replaced. Makes sense why I ended up having end up replacing transmission wiring harness instead of the o ring. The car runs great with 321k miles. I have what I believe 100% paper records including the 1st oil change in 1999 at the dealer.

The average car payment in America is $554.00 per month, not to mention needed full coverage insurance... Even brining the car to the shop, it's still much cheaper to keep an older car running than paying every single month.

In hindsight it’s best to know your personal vehicle and it’s needs/costs than spend maybe around the same amount for a used vehicle you haven’t driven for the rounded price. If your car hasn’t been wrecked or suffered frame corrosion, suspension, wheels, transmission, engine and brakes can be replaced as new. I’m a decent mechanic. I work on heavy vehicles, I just don’t have the room to work on my own vehicle like a driveway to do engine/transmission work. I can do all the fluid changes/spark plugs. Can do suspension if I have the time.

On the plus side - it is a car you know and a car you can fix, plus not all those 'repairs' are necessary now for safe use of the vehicle. Cost could be spread out over a few months/years. I would consider replacing the drivers seat just for your sanity...nothing screams 'old car' more than a worn drivers seat.

Two points here. The gentleman is doing his own work on his how car and how satisfying is that. Secondly, if he loves the car why not. A new Forester starts at what $24-25,000US. How much money do people spend on classic cars? Thousands. Good for him.

When the list is shorter than your beard you know you have a solid car.😂I kid I kid. Most of the stuff is just bushings and other items that just wear out with time. Nothing that major. I'd probably give it a full detail. A quick polish or paint correction and an interior detail. It'll look like a new car.

I'm not sure why people would obsess on labor costs to maintain a Subaru. Labor costs vary widely based on location and individual mechanics. The labor costs won't vary based on car brand either, only on how long that labor takes (may take longer on AWD). IMO if you love a car you can't put a price on having to replace it so cost of repairs is a little less important. Spending on maintenance is a must with any car and spending on preventative maintenance may save money long term.

People bash Subaru as unreliable. I did everything wrong to have a reliable car. In 2013 I became the 7th owner of an 05 Outback XT wagon with almost 150k miles which started out as some sort of cab. I gave it some modifications and a dyno-tune. Now I drive it hard and mostly in the city. The only unforeseen problem, I had to replace a clutch. After 7 years of my abuse my 15 year old car squeaks over bumps and runs out of passing power at 100 mph are my biggest issues and they aren't keeping me up at night;)

I think it's totally fine to do or not do. I mean, when it's a car like this already in great shape with no rust that always had it's regular maintenance, and you still like the car, it's just parts, go for it. But if the car is rusted out, engine and/or transmission problems, on top of a lot of worn rubber parts, it's probably not worth it. Unless it means that much to someone. I mean, whether someone wants to 2JZ swap their Caravan is no business to me. In the end, it's parts that need to be replaced, and if the cost is worth it to someone, that's all that matters. And I'd say a car in this good of shape with that cool of an engine us totally worth it.

I think looking at "retail value" kf the car as any threshold to make repairs is quite dumb thing people do and main reason why cars fail them later. If you care for it and repair it will serve the household much longer as it will be pretty much restored to factory condition with full suspension and the rest meaning it can potentially do another 200/300k miles if well taken care of. It doesnt matter how much value it is on 2nd hand market, because at that point it will be one of survivors.

Plus labor rates vary like crazy all over the country and world. Additionally if you have to pay $2,000 in labor in a year, but if you had gotten a new car you'd make that in payments in 3-6 months, what's worth it to you? Obviously is going to vary for every person.

I'd really like to know where the unreliable automatic transmission rumors came from. Around here maybe 1 in 100 Subarus that people stop driving are due to a bad transmission? Obviously making that up on the spot, but my point is I've seen countless 4EAT with hundreds of thousands of miles. The main reason they die, like any trans, is neglect.

i couldnt care less about people mentioning about labour, as you said it, its your car/project. It's actually interesting and esp for gen3 owners of what may be going wrong of that mileage... and also insight for others. I have a gen5 but I still find it interesting ... people I think are missing the point where it's you just sharing your experience. As you said it, it's yours... Mr Subaru isn't telling people to copy his "journey" The detail you go into is second to none. People challenging you re labour... petty pfffft!

ayske1 I thought he’s vibe towards labour was a bit harsh, a compromise between giving the labour rate and giving nothing at all would have been to give the amount of hours he spent on it. This would do two things. It would allow average joe to say ok it took him 40 hours so it might take me 80 but they could also deduce a rough labour price in their own state or country. I’ve a gen4 legacy GT from japan and he is freaking me out with all the maintenance he is doing!

Mr Subaru... Hope you’re well. I’ve always wanted a Baja and I am finally going to buy one. However, here in Canada there are only 5 of them for sale in the whole country! I’m in Ontario, and 4 of them are for sale here. Two of which are out of my budget ($10,000+), one in awful shape but there’s one I have my eye on. It’s a 2003 Baja 2.5N/A, automatic with 320,000km or 200,000miles. It looks to be in really good shape cosmetically. Defects are: engine light on for oxygen sensor, typical dog leg rust that plagues the northern vehicles and the seller sais the oil pan is leaking. I asked if he’s ever changed the timing belt and head gaskets and the timing belt has been changed twice BUT the head gaskets have not been changed according to him. He’s had it for 15 years. My question is should I get it and risk buying a EJ251 with 200k miles with original head gaskets? Or should I wait for the right one to come along? He’s asking $4500 CAD but offered it to me for $3000 cad. Thanks!

Hi! Just replaced the timing belt kit on my 2006 2.0X forester DOHC, on the left side and in the middle everything is aligned nicely, all the lines and cuts and marks in perfect harmony. But on the right side if the upper wheels little cut is aligned with the line on the belt, then they are one tooth right from the cut at the plastic thing above the wheel. Any idea what went wrong? Tried to figure out for two hours and left it for tomorrow before I go crazy, It's a made in germany belt, the rest of the kit is japanese, the OEM stuff without the Subaru pricing (couldn't find the Mitsuboshi belt). Is it possible that they painted the line on the belt on the wrong place? Or what can I do in this case? Thanks!

Do all your suspension work on the gravel driveway and I will pay you for your labor. A little bit confused about the quote on the sway bar bushings. Any reason to replace the metal bracket? You mentioned Subaru says timing chain is"lifetime." But I know my 2009 has it listed for 105000 mi. Please tell me I'm wrong. And why does Subaru use rtv on everything? I've done plenty of suspension work out there in the gravel. I didn't quote the sway bar bushing bracket, just the bushings and end links. 105k is timing belt, not chain replacement interval. What else could they use to seal metal to metal?

I wish I could get down on my knees like that. I wouldn't last 10 minutes. I was thinking about how they use sealant on the 5eat transmission pan. I considered pulling the pan to clean out sediment...and then quickly forgot about it. I did see your front bushings are $15 and left/right dependant and 09 Legacy 3.0 are $6 and same for both sides. I stopped trying to figure out OEM pricing when I paid $20 front dust cover and $20 for the helper.

A full flush isn't exactly required. A drain and fill however only replaces about 1/2 the overall system. That being said, you can just do one every 15,000 miles (and replace the filter every other change) and still be in a great spot with 75% new fluid and a new filter w/o the dealer upcharge.

Yeah I wish I got paid for working on my own car! As far as the price of the maintenance items you listed except for reseal kit and machine work they are all consumables. My wife started keeping a log of all maintenance performed since she bought it. One day after logging in her latest coil change I hear "Holly crap!" Coming from the kitchen. When I go in to see what was up she was in tears and apologizing profusely for how much her suburban had cost us up until now.. I asked if it had ever left her stranded on the side of the road? When she replied "no" I told her that it's all regular maintenance and it's to be expected. Replace things on schedule and it will live forever! (We bought it used with 200k on odometer. Now getting ready to turn 300k) I know soon we will have to put money into refreshing the engine and told her what to expect when that happens. She's already setting money aside so when it happens it won't be a bite out of the wallet.

In my opinion, you drive your car for as long as you want and spend whatever you deem necessary to make that happen. No one else has any business saying anything other than that. You should look at cooper tires next time. I get the better models on my subaru's and they are great tires. While the total amount might seem like a lot, in the long run, it will still be better than new subaru model on the market. Miss my old subarus greatly. After this work you are going to do, there will probably be many years of faithful service from your subaru. No payments, which is always a plus. 4eat's will last a really long time if correctly maintained and I am sure yours will. The 4eat was manufactured for a very long time and is a proven winner, this is based on experience and experience of friends. Not internet babble. I say keep it on the road as long as possible. Treat her right and she will return the favor. It's that simple.

Hey Mr. Subaru my 97 OBS has a CEL and is throwing a P0130 code. I replaced the O2 sensor and it went away for a while but came back after a bit of driving. what do? the guy who I bought it off put a borla cat back on. Could that be causing the O2 to throw the code?

To be honest I would not spend this much money on that car. I never drive any car longer than 10 years or 250,000 km (155,000 miles approx.) even if it is still in a good condition. Sometimes you just should let things go. But on the other hand, many people enjoy working on cars and keeping up with the maintenance which is great. In addition, there is no depreciation, monthly repayments and the cost for the car insurance is minimum. Good luck with the Outback!

@bbodan5393
@bbodan5393 4 жыл бұрын
H6 H6. I am really saying that because I own one. But, if you are looking to keep your fuel cost at a minimum, the 2.5. I'm getting 21 mpg overall. If it's the 3.0 second generation, they recommend 93 octane. I got a cousin with the 3.6 in the outback and she said she wouldn't buy a Subaru if it's a N/A 2.5 The 3.6 is supposed to run okay on 87 octane, but 3.6 has less tolerance on the head. I'd say H6 but it would be like me telling you chocolate ice cream is better than vanilla 😋
