When I was little, a priest told me that if I want to ask God a question I can open the Bible on a random page and read the verse and that's my advice from God. I can only imagine what it would be like to do that as a little kid and just so happen to stumble into this "inter-faith couple has sex and gets brutally murdered for it and God approves" story. Or the "two daughters get their father drunk so that they can have sex with him and get pregnant" one from a few books ago. Man, some chapters of the Bible are VERY not child-friendly.

@@werewolfantipaladin To be fair, most secular laws have such asterisks. I would hope laws have exceptions and conditions. One of my problems with biblical law is that those conditions are incredibly vague. To the degree that some even think there are no exceptions. My problem here is the asterisk points directly to the whim of the lawmaker. A Christian might respond that their God is perfect and his judgement is inherently correct. So much for "thou shalt not committ murder". Maybe God should have said that famous commandment has conditions applied. And he will also go back against "thou shalt not steal, covet thy neighbors goods" As God through Moses will Command his Israelites to invade, massacre, plunder their Midian neighbors. And those sacred commandments become null and void right then and there. Brings up an interesting question. @@Daniel-cz7kd I just imagine sitting on the edge of the bed talking to a 7 year old child who wants a story before they go to sleep - Once upon a time there was a man who had to leave his house because the city where he lived was being destroyed with fire and brimstone and everybody was dying a horrible painful death because they had been naughty. That's what happens to you if you are naughty. This man managed to get away but unfortunately his wife looked the wrong way and she was killed and turned into a pillar of salt. That's what happens to you if you look at something when you have been told not to. The man and his two daughters managed to escape and a bit later the two daughters got their dad really drunk and then they shagged him silly so that they could get pregnant. There, night night, sweet dreams.

@@andystokes8702 Very interesting, I like how you don’t follow your own guidelines, don’t change any names, don’t give any reason for the city being destroyed, make the child a 7 year old, and make the bedtime story quite irrelevant to your lessons on naughtiness and looking one way or another, especially when you make it a fictional story with no logical story or reasoning.

@@Daniel-cz7kd And your point is what, Daniel? What are these guidelines you mention? Don't change any names - My story did not name anybody. Don't give any reason for the city being destroyed - the reason is largely irrelevant, the 7 year old child wouldn't care one way or another. It is a horrific story yet one you are more than happy to tell your own children. Make the child a 7 year old - and why not? Christians ram this absolute shite down their childrens throats well before they are seven, they indoctrinate them from birth. What age would you find preferable - 5, 10, 13? You choose. I'm sure that if you are a Christian you might find this uncomfortable - tough shit, you're the ones pedalling this crock of poo, the fact that you are offended by it should tell you something but that's not going to happen, is it. You are the ones who think that telling small children these things is fine, not me. Moving to a different story - do you tell your children the story of David slewing the giant? - Yes, I'm sure you do although Im equally sure you do not tell them the very next bit - you know, the bit where David needs to prove himself to the king in order to gain the king's daughter's hand in marriage. Send your kids to me, I'll tell them all about how David slaughtered 200 men, cut off thir forekins and presented them to the king. Is that offensive too. Yes, it is, but it's your Bible that tells this story yet as Christians you seem somewhat relutant to tell your children about it. Go on, have the courage of your convictions.

@visaman 2 жыл бұрын
@@lower_case_t well, of course murder is wrong. Let's say, that from time to time, a little vigilante justice is at least tolerated by society. The Bernard Goetz case is a prime example. Goetz shot a man on the subway, thinking that he was about to be robbed. He was seen as a hero, for a brief time, at least, he did serve time for illegal firearms possession, and was sued for $43 million, by the man who was shot. But, for a brief time he was a hero, just like in the Bible Story. I will admit, that this was the first time that I heard this Bible Story, so, I am not an expert by any means, I just quoted what several apologists have written.

I would understand the followers, if they just accept that they serve a cruel and murderous god and say that they respect his power and whatnot. At least that would be truthful. But, alas, they rather go bonkers and drivel about some loving god and thou shall not kill and evil people going to hell, while also saying the Bible is true from page one to the end. And god somehow changed, because Jesus and stuff. And now is really nice, yet still condemns people to hell for not believing or being gay or getting raped, but - and I like to quote Carlin here - "He loves you!". And of course it is something different, when a Muslim kills a Christian than when a Christian kills a Muslim. Crusades and such are OK. And, as we can see in Numbers, when you are just living your life and have a nice little city, along comes a massive number of marauding people that demand you let them in and when you say "Weeeelll, I'd rather not. You look too dangerous and we do not have enough food anyway" your city will be razed, your people slaughtered and the murderers will still call you evil and feel no remorse AND think they made the right choice. Why not just say: We like to do whatever we like and if we want to kill and pillage and rape, we will do so, because OUR god does not care how we do thing as long as we get stuff done. That at least would be refreshingly honest.

Thank you for the weekly, comedic reminders of how bizarre, gruesome, and inane the Bible is, Hemant! I'm glad I'm an atheist and no longer struggling with the cognitive dissonance I had during my last few years as a Christian. I used to make excuses for the Bible; now I just laugh at how absurd it is.

In Numbers 25:1 it says they were messing around with the MOABITE women, but after killing a MIDIANITE woman, the Israelites were saved. Moabites and Midianites are totally different people: Moabites come from the incestuous sex of Lot and his daughter. Midianites are children of Abraham and Keturah. This is a scribal error in the Bible.

No wonder early Christian thinkers like Marcion saw the old testament god of the Israelites as a blood thirsty demiurge and separate and below the higher being he felt jesus was representing. On a related note there were early Christian sects that taught jesus was an opposer of the old testament Israelite god and they use a verse in the Torah that says something like "he who is hung from a tree is cursed by yahweh". As to say the old testament god had jesus crucified for preaching to people how to liberate from him and his torah. Of course this type of teaching whether sensible or not would only add to the negative treatment of jewish people by impressionable racists beyond the negative narratives already against jews in the new testament. Just food for thought here

1. Bael was the big boy, and I mean the BIIIIIIIG boy, in that part of the world. I do believe the suffix "el" is even where you get God's other name, "Elohim". The people who wrote the Bible would have been in the "Yahweh school", so to speak, but before full Jewish unification, there was the Yahweh side and the Elohim side, as far as I know. 2. WOW, uhh...wasn't Moses married to a Midianite? CHILL, dude. They were Jewish (by which I just mean that they worshipped Yahweh/Elohim, since Judaism wasn't a thing yet, not as we understand it). Freaking casual Biblical racism, eh? George Carlin had ANOTHER point, Hemant: "You worship God?" "Yep." "You worship MY God?" "Nope." BANG goes the gun. 3. Oh, "God's anger" equals "plague" in a lot of these stories. There's stuff in the "Iliad", which was a Bronze Age narrative (though written in the Iron Age, but it's WAAAAAAAAAAAAY older than tht) where the god Apollo kills a bunch of Greek soldiers outside of Troy by way of plague, because these guys had pillaged the temple of Apollo just outside of Troy and kidnapped one of his priests, and the priest's daughter. Apollo was, among other things, the god of plague: he could rain his arrows down on you in form of illness, rather than actual arrows. 4. Snort, this Phinehas dude would have looked a lot more like you than like me, Hemant. I'm half Irish, so pathetically pale skin, light eyes, etc. Jesus too, for that matter. you ever see a white Palestinian? Me neither. 5. Hey, obit-wise for that woman, not the WORST deal ever. At least she go a name. I would need to confirm this by actually reading he thing, like I've been telling myself to do for ages, but I'm FAIRLY sure I've heard that Mother Mary is the only named woman in the Quran. Can anyone confirm?
