Church was so boring as a kid. We were catholic so we had to kneel, which is very uncomfortable for me. Many was the time when I'd pretend to be sick, especially on Xmas eve. when we had "midnight mass" As soon as I moved out, I quit going forever and enjoy my entire Sunday. No more kneeling for me.

Jesus may have been a Nazarite (assuming he existed at all) and this got misunderstood to indicate a home town of Nazareth. Many believe that the fact the gospels try to balance Nazareth with his supposed birth place, Bethlehem, as an indication there really must have been a historical Jesus who hailed from this place. Nazareth is described in the gospels as a city with a cliff. Neither Josephus (who at one point was responsible for fortifying the towns in this area) nor any other contemporary source outside the NT seems to have heard of this Nazareth. (And if a real Jesus was a real Nazarite, can you picture him with a shaved head? And would turning water into wine and resurrecting dead people like Lazarus go against his vows?)
@rambling964
@rambling964 2 жыл бұрын
The village in Galilee named Nazareth has dwellings that date back to Jesus's time, and there is no evidence that it was ever called anything other than Nazareth. The earlier Christian writings simply state Jesus came from the physical place of Nazareth. It's only later writings that come up with contradictory stories about why he was born in Bethlehem and then moved or returned to Nazareth. The simplest explanation seems also the most likely - historical Jesus came from Nazareth.
@oscargordon
@oscargordon 2 жыл бұрын
Samson, Samuel, and John the Baptist were all Nazarites born of previously barren women who got special blessings to have Nazarite children. As with all things Jesus, the authors needed to kick things up a notch so rather than old women who had not been previously able to conceive, Jesus is born to a young virgin. But yeah, during the oral tale period before Mark wrote his gospel, people were talking about a special prophet blessed with magical powers, which would make him a Nazarite, and that had to be squared with the prophecy that the Messiah would be from the city of David ie. Bethlehem. The water into wine would be OK because he didn't touch any of the grapes. Also although he served wine, it doesn't say he actually drank any of it. He made the dead people no longer dead. These are all clearly added to his story to show that he didn't break the Nazarite rules.
@johnnehrich9601
@johnnehrich9601 2 жыл бұрын
@@rambling964 According to Ken Humphreys (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4abYXuhgceHfqs), Nazareth would basically be on the site of Japha, which Josephus does mention. Humphreys also points out that the NT has Jesus either going "near" actual cities in the area or going to cities that nobody at the time ever heard about.

It's not what we think of as vinegar though, it's a typical drink in the whole mediterranean area that served as affordable beverage for the poor, cheaply made, low quality and too sour to count as good wine. But it was not really vinegar where all the alcohol had turned to acid. It's the same stuff the Romans put on the lance to give Jesus to drink but hit his side with instead. Translation weaknesses that are well known by the scholars, but baffle laypeople.

1. Well, I can't drink anyway--I'm on a lot of blood-thinners--but I do like grapes. No deal. 2. There are a lot of cultures where they never cut their hair, Hemant. Confucians, Sikhs, many of the North American Indigenous Nations, Rastafarians, sometimes Jews and Muslims. Different reasons for different cultures, though: some of the Indigenous peoples think it weakens you spiritually, whereas, with Confucians, it's that your body is considered a gift from your parents, so to change it is to dishonour your parents. 3. Yeah, the uncleanliness of dead bodies in the spiritual sense is cross-cultural, too, but it largely came to the Jews through the Zoroastrians. Zoroastrianism sees death as the ultimate pollution, so only special priests are allowed to touch dead bodies. It's a good idea, anyway: germs and that in these hotter climates, eh. 4. Snort, what has EVER been the difference between worshipping God and submitting to "him"? Hell, and not to knock a religion here, but the word "Muslim" means "one who submits". I always read that as submitting to the good, though: submitting yourself to DO good and selfless things. It's a much more communal religion than Christianity, for example. 5 .Oh, this sounds very close to the origin of what's called the Irish Blessing. "May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the Lord make His face to shine on you, until we meet again." I can't remember the whole thing, but that's part of one verse. It's a very moving song, actually. I've heard it done by my best friend's choir and by our city's Celtic Choir.

Grape juice wasn't possible in biblical times. Before pasteurization, grape juice wasn't possible. It would stat producing alcohol as soon as it was pressed and even the grapes already had a little alcohol. When we picked wine grapes, my 2 year old daughter got a little drunk from eating the grapes. Also, I was in a South American prison for a couple of months. e weren't allowed grapes, raisins, or anything that can be used to produce alcohol. Your bible classes are on point, but once in a while there is a point that needs clarification.

A Muslim cab driver waited outside, asking if I could go in and ask for his client. I could understand resisting temptation, but if you've never consumed alcohol ... you aren't likely to be tempted by going into a bar.

OK, Numbers is the most confusing book of the Bible yet. Exodus and especially Leviticus have been jumping from topic to topic at random, but it all seemed to fit SOME kind of theme. Numbers just feels like a collection of "Oh, and by the way..." stories. Like God randomly remembered something he meant to tell Moses and completely changed topic, except he does that every chapter. This is the first time Nazarites have come up, there's no introduction or explanation of who they are, why they're important or why we're talking about them... We just launch directly into rules. From what I can tell given these descriptions, Nazarites seem to be some kind of Hair Worship cult. Certainly makes the story of Samson feel a lot less random and silly, I guess.

Although it isn't at all clear from the actual stories that made it into the Bible, from Jewish lore, taking a Nazarite vow meant that Yahweh would grant you special powers.
@Malidictus

@@oscargordon Oh. OK, that makes even MORE sense out of the Samson story, then. Yeah, see it seems like the story should have opened with this. What is a Nazarite and why do people become one? I knew for sure it couldn't be just "to serve God" since all the Israelites already do that. This makes a lot more sense, and makes the Nazarites closer to "holy warriors" or at least "holy servants". God grants them the power necessary to serve Him. Why the hair, though? Why is that the focus of the Nazarites. It seems so random. It sounds closer to Greek myth or even modern Superheroes than Christianity, at least as it's presented nowadays. It feels almost like a "magic/holy artefact" thing.
@oscargordon
@oscargordon 2 жыл бұрын
@@Malidictus Yeah, the hair thing is weird but I can guess not getting drunk was a good idea, but then drinking only fermented stuff was the only way not to get dysentery. Although clearly anyone at any age can make a vow and be granted magical powers, I am only aware of three people in the Bible described as Nazarite and they were all that way from birth, Samson the warrior with supernatural power in his hair, the prophet Samuel, and John the Baptist who could wash away peoples sins by dunking them in the river. Now the funny thing is that those three were all the children of old barren women that prayed to Yahweh and were made miraculously pregnant. Of course Jesus had to one up them by being miraculously born to a 14 year old who had never had sex.

@@oscargordon Wasn't there talk of Mary mother of Jesus potentially not being described as a "virgin" so much as a "young woman?" I'm honestly not that familiar with scripture critique off-hand, but I seem to recall something about the translation of the word used to describe her. Honestly, I look forward to getting to something more interesting than "Biblical tax law". Exodus, Leviticus and now this is a bit much all back-to-back. There are a lot of interesting stories in these books, but I guess they happen much later.

@@Malidictus Culturally at that time, and still in some places today, females are married, to a usually older man, before their first period. The mutually contradictory origin stories both say that Mary was betrothed but not married, so no matter how you define the word, she was a virgin (except for that romp with the cute Roman soldier). One of the accounts, I forget which one states that she did not have sex with Joe until after Jesus was born. Hate to break it to you but we still have 30 more weeks of Numbers rules before we get to the 34 weeks of Deuteronomy rules.

Hemant or friendly atheist Wow Hemant, thanks for answering the question I never asked in the first place, and especially answering your own questions with “I don’t know.” And “No clue.” When the answer’s already in the same book and placed you’re reading. However if you’re going to answer any questions at all, tell me: why can’t I want to take the Nazirite vow and life? What does purple yarn have anything to do with grapes? Or did you simply forget about green grapes? What’s the problem with Nazirites living these days? Where’s the rule for “no hanging out with future zombies.”? Why do you say “there’s no way the journey was worth it,”? Finally, why do you or anyone else need be bothered by the Nazirite vow and way of life, if you’ve no desire to accept the honour and commitment it calls to live for God?

However if you’re going to answer any questions at all, tell me: why can’t I want to take the Nazirite vow and life? - you can. What does purple yarn have anything to do with grapes? Or did you simply forget about green grapes? - nothing. It was a reference to god's very particular choices. he wanted purple yarn in the story. What’s the problem with Nazirites living these days? - they are religious Jews, right? Religious Jews mutilate baby boys / accept the mutilation of baby boys. No other problem with them. oh, and they are religious = they indoctrinate children. Where’s the rule for “no hanging out with future zombies.”? - in the bible. you just fail to connect the dots. today's corpses are tomorrow's zombies. Not really, but in the bible. Why do you say “there’s no way the journey was worth it,”? - long hair in the Middle East, and NOT drinking wine. All for nothing (the abrahamic god cannot exist) Finally, why do you or anyone else need be bothered by the Nazirite vow and way of life, if you’ve no desire to accept the honour and commitment it calls to live for God? - no problem. Feel free to make a fool of yourself. And to scam the gullible. Just do not indoctrinate children, and do not cut off any piece of any body part of any babies. As you are probably new to the channel, here’s an explanation: Friendly Atheist is reading the Bible and taking it at face value using only the information actually in the Bible to inform his understanding. This is because we have been told that the Bible is the word of God and should be accepted as complete and true as written. There are many instances where his statements of confusion and incredulity could be unpacked with outside data from the fields of linguistics, history, or apologetics but his entire point is that as soon as you start down the road of trying to analyze or interpret these verses with outside information you quickly find that objectively true science, verifiable history, archaeology and anthropology actually raise indisputable doubts about the veracity of the entire narrative.

As usual with apologists that make crap comments, you yourself did not explain to us what YOU thought Nazarite meant. I assure you that FA knows that a Nazarite gets granted special powers like Samson, Samuel, John the Baptist, and Jesus. That is how you got the mutually contradictory origin stories for Jesus because people were confusing Jesus being a Nazarite with someone being from some place called Nazareth and the Messiah being born in Bethlehem.

Two men were crucified alongside of Jesus. Both men were criminals that were sentenced to death, and both men reviled and mocked him along with many observers of the event (see Matthew 27:39-44). But one of the men had a change of heart as he hung there. Eventually, he said to the other criminal: Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. [The scripture continues]...And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. (see Luke 23:39-42) Jesus had mercy on the man that asked him for it. We read: And Jesus said unto him, Verily, I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. (see Luke 23:43) What can we learn from this? Fear the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone can save one’s soul (1 John 4:14). Leave off from mocking and reviling his word, and look to him for forgiveness of your sins and eternal life by faith: Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me hath everlasting life. (John 6:47) (See also John 3:16-17 and Isaiah 45:22) We are warned that the wrath of God abides on those who do not believe on the Son (John 3:36).

I appreciate that you are trying to warn people of danger and to help, passing along the things you were taught as you grew up. However, if you genuinely want to convince people, then you're going to have to put in more effort and do your homework. For example: there are over 4,000 religions in this world, each with their own god or gods, belief systems, rules, ideas about afterlife and eternal reward and punishment (or lack thereof), reincarnation, and much more, all guided by their own holy book which they are taught is infallible. And they've all been taught that their religion is truth, while all the others are false. And they are all completely convinced that faith leads to THEIR religion and their god(s). So, who do we believe? Who has the truth? What is a fair and impartial test that can demonstrate which (if any) is true and which are false? For example, the test cannot simply be "the bible says so" because any claim must be substantiated independently. The Bible is like a salesman, bragging about its product. And there are countless holy books which claim that they themselves alone have the truth. It can't be faith, because every religion claims faith leads to them. So what is the method? Then there is the issue of bias. Have you noticed the overwhelming majority of religious people in this world are the same religion as their parents, the religion they were brought up to believe (for fear of eternal punishment and parental disapproval) and the same religion that is prevalent in their culture? It's an astounding coincidence. And finally, if there really is a divine super-being out there with the power to send a soul to eternal reward or torment as it sees fit, then why isn't every single believer in the world madly scrambling to study every single religion to make absolutely sure that they got the correct one? Because right now, odds are 1 in 4,000 that they've picked the right religion, plus vastly lower if the true religion disappeared over the millenia (war, conquest, famine, etc.), and even worse if the truth is one of the 40,000+ different registered denominations of christianity. How can a religious person sleep at night and just sit comfortably in church, blissfully singing along, when there is so much at stake (eternity) and their odds of having guessed the correct religion are incredibly low? These are just a few of the concerns shared by those on the outside, seeking truth -- just like a detective searches dispassionately for the true killer in a who-done-it murder mystery, not just who they suspect.

@@PaulThomas-qb9cx Inquires demonstrate the Bible to be a book unlike any other; it is the only book of which the author is God. Unlike any other book, approximately 30% of it is prophetic in nature (foretelling of things before the fact). Only God could know and make known these things. Of himself, God says, Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure. (Isaiah 46:9-10) Jesus Christ fulfilled many of the prophetic scriptures about himself in his first coming over 2,000 years ago. In this way, he demonstrated himself to be the promised Messiah (Genesis 3:15, Isaiah 53). We can be sure that the remainder of the prophecies about him will be fulfilled in the future. The gospel of Christ is to be preached to every creature (Mark 16:15). It was first preached in Jerusalem; it has since gone out into the world (ref. Luke 24:46-47). It is estimated that over 5 billion copies of the scriptures have been printed and circulated. Though penned by over 40 different men over a period of approximately 1,500 years, the scriptures consistently teach of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Men's consciences testify that they have broken the law of God (Galatians 3:24). Scripture testifies that all men are sinners in need of salvation (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23). Jesus Christ bore men's sins in his own body on the tree (1 Peter 2:24) that men might be saved (John 3:16). God calls all people to be reconciled to himself through faith in his Son, Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:18-21).
