Raya and the Last Dragon has a lot of cool elements and interesting ideas. It's definitely a Disney movie. Oh well, it's got plenty of sins.
Next week: recent action sins & animated sins from a handful of years ago.

@Eugene Oisten what do you mean. The dragons reference in the movies are based on chinese dragons. The dragons resemble the types of wingless long serpentine dragons from chinese myth and the thought that the death of a dragon causes the thing it represents to disappear is similar to how in taoist myths the deities are direct links or physical manifestations of the thung their linked to.(because dragons are also somethings considered to be divinity or are straight up just gods). Also that pose that petrified people get into is a stance commonly found in chinese statues mostly of mortals asking for forgiveness. So it has tons of chinese myths aspects incorperated into it

@Eugene Oisten true but the most widely known ones are from taoist and (technically) buddist religion both of which are known as 2 of the three largest religion of china for most of its existence. Yes i know buddhism orginated in india but the most well known stories were popularised from china not south east asia. How do i know this, cause i live in south east asia and the origin of most of my nations buddhist and taoist teachings come for china. I know hindism also has wingless dragons and japan has them as well but they are simply less well known so the assumption that the movie was indpired by taoist or buddhist beliefs is not wrong. Bruh

@Eugene Oisten also china has been know for 3 major religions buddhism,taoism and confucionism most of which have their own local myths,legends and beliefs. And the idea that dragons are linked to water and rivers are connected to taoisms 4 directional dragon kings which are the most well known wingless dragons i believe. Perhaps i should stop arguing if you lump all three very distinct religious practices as 'chinese religion'

I like the graphics, I liked the voice acting, I hated that stupid baby, and I liked the potential this movie had, HOWEVER the movie felt forced, and they spent so much time trying to give this movie a back story that they really didnt give us a chance to build an emotional bond with either of them. On top of that the message was very damaging and toxic, not at all something I'd want children to learn. Basically it was saying to trust people who mean you harm, forgive and forget people that never even bothered to apologize nor make things right towards you, that people who have done wrong deserve little to no consequences for their actions. In reality this is a horrible message. What I dislike most is the fact that they tried to paint Raya out to be the bad guy for RIGHTFULLY feeling the way that she did. The creators meant well, but their message does more harm then good. Most importantly, I REALLY hated that baby.

I feel like this movie could have been vastly improved if 1) Raya and Nemari had known each other for longer than a day, making the "betrayal" more impactful and, ya know, a betrayal; 2) They omitted the whole flashback to when they were kids entirely. I think it would have been much more interesting if the first time we learn about the betrayal (and her losing her father) is when Raya is doing the ritual and says "I trusted someone I shouldn't have," and we only learn more about it as the story progresses, instead of literally being handed it. It would also make the confrontation scene in the cave a lot more dramatic and tense since we wouldn't know who Nemari is at that point or her past relationship to Raya. And before anyone complains, yes, I know this is a kids movie, but that doesn't mean there can't be improvements or critiques.

Oh, I thought the scene when young Raya and young Namaari were playing that Would You Rather game wasn’t the same day they had first met. Sure, they were wearing the same things but Namaari’s mom wears the same dress all the time so that doesn’t prove anything. They seemed a lot more familiar with each other than having met only hours ago would suggest.

I agree. Somehow in the last few years the message has passed that things intended for children must be dumbed down. Children are extremely intelligent - there are lots of things they don't know of course and some of them seem absurd to adults but they aren't stupid: quite the opposite they are curious and even if you don't give them all the answers they will find their own. If you make a good movie then it may be too difficult for little children. That's ok - they will still manage to follow the story and it will be loved by older people. At most they will get bored. If you make a stupid movie (and this movie make the viewer feel stupid) no one will like it and the little children will get bored anyway.

Honestly, my biggest problem with this movie, and one of the reasons I feel like its message about trust doesn’t work, is because Raya and Namaari’s relationship is handled really badly and confusingly. The movie acts like they used to be good friends and that they really knew each other, but they didn’t. The only reason Namaari was being nice to Raya to begin with was because she was tricking her into letting her see the gem so she could take it. She literally meets Raya and betrays her in the same scene. I feel like if they did something similar to Moses and Ramses’s relationship from the Prince of Egypt where they grew up together as childhood friends, but due to the ongoing feud with their clans and their parents’ obsession with getting the gem, they slowly drifted apart and became enemies, then that would be a much more compelling and heartbreaking story, and it would at least give Raya a slightly better reason for being willing to trust her at all again. And I don’t normally say this, but honestly, I think Frozen did a better job with its theme about trust. While I would argue it’s not explicit or the main point of the story, I feel like there is an underlying theme when it comes to Anna and Elsa and how they trust/don’t trust people. Anna is extroverted, energetic, and willing to let anyone into her life, while Elsa is introverted, isolated, and unwilling to let anyone into her life out of fear of accidentally hurting them. The movie shows through Elsa’s isolation and through Hans being the twist villain that being too trustful or too untrustful can be dangerous. That is a way more interesting way to teach a message about trust to kids in my opinion. Anyway, let me know if u agree.
@kabo0m
@kabo0m Жыл бұрын
63 people so far agree with you for a reason! You are 100% correct in your observations! I felt that Frozen had a better story, presentation for that story, better focus, and it all made sense. I mean why would Raya trust Namaari again... After such a betrayal? Raya just met Namaari and ooh they both liked dragons (uh .. wouldn't everyone if the WHOLE WORLD had such respect and honor for dragons who they looked at like gods) and let her see something she was supposed to protect with her life and had trained years to even get the privilege of getting to even see herself? Actually .. that should have been yet another Sin. Raya trains for years to even SEE it yet shows Namaari on the first day they met.

I'd also like to point out that it somehow took Raya 6 YEARS to get to the end of each river section (apparently there were hundreds of river endings but that map had no more than 30 at most) yet somehow she can hop around the whole world in about a day or less when trying to find the gems. Not to mention the way Namari can be ahead if Raya when she just riding her cats while Raya has a motorized dragon boat and a speedy ball of cuteness.

In the movie’s defense, we have to assume that Raya’s mode of transportation the past 6 years has been her obligatory Disney animal companion, as opposed to the boat her and the gang sail on for the rest of the movie. But then that begs the question: why didn’t she just get a boat in the first place?

I thought the world the story was too big for the runtime of the movie, and could probably be much better expressed in a video game where the world could be properly explored. A video game setting could also make more sense of the ending. Rather than just the world learning to stop hating each other rather randomly, the process could be a little more naturally pushed along in the form of various side quests and such where the main characters learn more about the other people in the world and that they aren’t as bad as they seem. Namaari never apologized about the coup she started when they were kids, stooped to victim-blaming Raya for killing Sisu when it was Namaari herself that brought a crossbow to their negotiation and aimed it at them in the first place.Her mother may have influenced her but in the end, the person who decides how Namaari acts is Namaari herself. She never apologized on-screen and that was a missed opportunity. Sisu's story about how her siblings trusted her with the gem is no way parallel to what Raya went through: Sisu was NOT harmed by what her siblings did, Raya was hurt by Namaari did and once again, Namaari didn't act like the adult she thought she was and apologize to Raya.

Because it is natural to fear emotionless inhuman beings so its only natural you as a human and as a mortal would like the idea of a flawed or more humane wielder of extreme power. Even though most beings of extreme power are likely not idiots because of well literally all we know about what responisblities such power holds. Of course, clinging and liking such a trope is your minds effort of hope that if such beings actually exist they wouldnt be too cold or emotionless towards humanity. Here’s some fun facts that people may not know about this movie. It’s not based mostly on China. It’s actually based on Southern Asian countries Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. Sisu is based on the Nāga, a water dragon in Southeast Asia. According to the screenwriter, “The difference between an Eastern or Chinese dragon versus the Nāga is that a Chinese dragon is based on luck and power, and the Nāga, because it’s water, it’s life and hope. It’s just that slight little difference. We didn’t want a dragon that came in to empower Raya to hit people more; we wanted one that would inspire her to open up and trust.”

The people were hoarding the stones like Gollum’s “precious”. That one chick was acting like it was the stone from the hobbit. The thing that I will only refer to as the “blob of darkness” was an animated version of either “the darkness” from Twitches or “the it” from A Wrinkle in Time. The flash to the present time in the beginning of the movie was similar to Rey’s introduction in The Force Awakens. Can we get ONE Disney movie that is completely original?

Huh, and I was thinking it was the “character turns to stone so everyone else can go through all the emotions of the character dying, but in a way we can bring them back later” that sounded too familiar, both from Narnia and Mewtwo Vs Mew.

The lack of resistance or desire for anyone else to get them is crazy. @PanSpaceman
@PanSpaceman 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah only the main characters seemed to care at all about the rocks, and depending on how that's set up I could forgive that much (though as it is, it's still sinful) but for the macguffins to be so unimpressive for most people it just makes it all the more sinful to not have raya, in full dragon form, say hey give me the stones (sorry, "trust me with the stones") so I can use my dragon magic to fix stuff.

@@Tempusmon the evidence was the statues Raya saw along the way. She had a stone piece with her, they didn’t. I’m pretty sure the idea was that everyone who tried to get them, as well as everyone who would have guarded them, got druuned in the process.

The thing that pisses me off about this movie is the rivers. They could flow into the dragon shaped lake. But instead like 20+ lakes all flow OUT. Why are they flowing out? Where are they going? Where does the water for the lake come from? WATER DOESNT FLOW OUT FROM A LAKE IN MULTIPLE PLACES. All that had to happen is the water flows into the lake from these rivers. This one thing just pisses me off. Have they never seen how rivers and lakes work? Anyway. Please make reasonable water features in your magic dragon Disney movies.
@adde9506
@adde9506 2 жыл бұрын
I was expecting a "Disney doesn't know how rivers work" sin when I got here. But, geographically speaking, multiple rivers *could* conceivably flow out of a lake, BUT these rivers flow to nowhere. And I suppose the reversal of the water could mean that the rivers were flowing backwards before Sisu was revived, but then, if all springs lead to the lake, regardless of geography, where is the rest of the planet?

A personal sin from myself. They set up the mom/queen of fang to be the big baddy, with her saying ominous sh*t like "I will take care of this." then she just stops existing for the last 30 minutes of the movie. it would have been more Disney if the daughter listened to them to put down the crossbow, and then the mother barged in and shot Sisu. My point being it feels like they rewrote the ending the way the mom acts like she is gonna do something stupid, and then just peaces out.

@Robert Giese What exactly do you think the entire premise of the movie was, if not the consequences of not trusting people and coming together? I mean honestly, the consequences are already there and the entire movie is about resolving that consequence by undoing the lack of trust, which was the only way the darkness was defeated. And it was only when people trusted each other again that the dragons were able to return. So, yeah, I really don't understand your point. They lived and witnessed the consequences, and now have a story to pass down to generations warning them of what could happen if they fall back to the greedy, mistrustful, and backstabby ways.

I have not seen this movie yet, but my first impression was that it took a lot of plot points from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. There is a shattered crystal that causes destruction and needs to be restored, there’s a purple “Darkening” (I forget what they call it in Raya, but that’s what it’s called in AoR), there’s a need to build trust between the clans (humans in Raya and Gelflings in AoR), and there’s even a rolling creature used for transportation (used by Raya the protagonist and the Armaligs used by the antagonistic Skeksis in AoR). As a massive A:TLA fan, I definitely see your point too. The references are everywhere! My twin loves Raya but never really cared for A:TLA and never watched AoR. I’d probably be the person that hates Raya (when I eventually watch it) but loves both A:TLA and AoR. And why doesn’t anyone point out how much Sisu looks like an adult female version of Azymondias from The Dragon Prince??? Another brilliant show, by the way! Raya just seems to borrow too much to warrant itself as a great standalone film. Maybe I’m wrong and I’ll end up liking it, but I can’t unsee all the references and I know they’ll haunt me when I finally watch it for myself…

I would like to point out a few suspicious similarities between this movie and Avatar the last air bender. 1. Tuk tuk is pretty much Appa. Both used for transport, both had scenes showing them as a baby but grow up to be enormous, and both are mythical creatures, both can swim. 2. The title. Raya and the Last Dragon; Avatar: the Last Airbender. The only thing that is different about the wording is the “and” in Raya and the Last Dragon. 3. Each of the dragons having different powers, just like the different types of benders 4. Lands were divided and each land hosts different powers (cough literally the same as avatar cough) 5. Namaari is Zuko 6. That scene where the monkeys knock out the guards is the same technique that Ty Lee uses. I know I’m forgetting some you I think you get the point. The whole time I watched the movie all I could think of was Avatar. A little weird if you ask me
