Honestly, the greatest Sin in this movie is the representation of Blu and Jewel‘s relationship. In the first movie they came together as a couple by realizing that they both cared for one another and were willing to sacrifice part of what they loved to be together and find something better. The first movie ended with Blu moving into the jungle to make Jewel happy while Jewel stayed in Rio so that they could still live close enough to a city so Blu could still see Linda. My point is that the last movie ended with the clear idea that Blu and Jewel cared about each other and their relationship was built on the foundation of mutual cooperation and attention so that they formed an equal partnership and were both happy with the life they chose for themselves. But in the second movie they act like A) they still live like humans instead of living in the jungle; B) Blu is the soul foundation of the relationship’s stability given that he is the only one actively trying to keep everyone happy; and C) that Jewel is now a selfish wife who either doesn’t realize that she’s hurting Blu or she doesn’t care. Seriously, the first movie ended with them both happy, yet in the second Jewel is completely okay with letting Blu get tortured by her father, upstaged by the guy her father is clearly trying to set her up with, and taking him away from everything he has ever cared about or loved just to satisfy her desire to live more wild. The greatest problem is that they forgot how to write Jewel for this movie, because in Rio 2 she just completely takes advantage of her family. She says that the kids love being wild, but we never see a direct comparison to their kids lives at home vs here. The argument could be made that the kids prefer the jungle, or that they preferred Rio. Either way, there isn’t enough on screen evidence to support that the kids like it better in the Amazon or in Rio. Also, Jewel is completely taking advantage of the fact that Blu is willing to do anything to make Jewel happy, even if it’s making him miserable. The point is that in the first movie Jewel was not this selfish. Relationships are built on mutual trust, effort, and understanding. One way effort relationships are not healthy and there is no way Jewel from the first movie would ever let this happen. But for real. The GREATEST Sin in this movie is that it is called “Rio 2” and yet it hardly spends any time in “Rio.”

Just the other day, I sat down with a friend and we talked about at least five different ideas that kept the original plot of this movie in tact, but made it so much more enjoyable by giving the characters better traits that built on their arcs from the first movie, gave better reasons for why they have conflict, and gave better understanding to those who should have been written better in the film. There are a ton of ways that they could have written these characters that would have made the movie better. Their biggest crime is that they didn’t put in the time and attention necessary to make Jewel an evolved version of her Rio 1 movie character.

I completely agree! Every word you said was accurate. I like the first film a lot, but I can barely even watch Rio 2. My real problems are: A) Like you said, barely any of the film actually happens in Rio. And Linda keeps moving around the world according to what her bird does, apparently! B) There being a massive flock of other Blue Macaws that were believed to be extinct is a clichéd, unrealistic and uninteresting plot point C) Bringing Nigel back as the villain just felt lazy. He really didn't effect the plot and he was 20 times more annoying than he was in the first movie. Oh, and the scenes with musical numbers between Nigel and the female frog who is in love with him are the most unwatchable parts. D) Is Jewel completely blind?! Even if you have just reunited with your long-lost family, I can't express enough how bad it is that Jewel wasn't far from cheating on Blu with her childhood friend Roberto, and she didn't notice or at least care at all about her father treating her husband like crap. Jewel and the kids were drifting away from Blu, he's in an unfamiliar place, he was being bullied by the other birds, and Linda and Tulio are too busy to spend time with him. Blu was all alone and Jewel did nothing. It's disgusting.

I feel like in reality in the second movie, Jewel actually doesn’t give a shit about Blu whatsoever and just abandons her kids anyway just to be with her family. Jewel is obviously wrong it that situation because in reality her children, AND husband all are comfortable with city life. I don’t know why Jewel would even try to get out in the jungle just because everyone else is out there. This movie was fine, but there are 3 things that bother me about it 1. The fact that they retconned the Blue Macaws to NOT being endangered, thus destroying the entire purpose of their adventure in the first movie 2. The scene where that one cute little prairie dog was eaten, and having the leopard sing with its voice, that wasn't funny, that was horrific! I mean yeah the prairie dog gets regurgitated out later, but come on! 3. Eduardo is the exact kind of character I would NOT want to see as the disappointed father-in-law! And yet they made him be that. I mean I understand he gave Blu a fair chance, but if the movie was smart, it wouldn't even make him support that cliche in the first place!

Even if it might seem like most of the country leans towards a particular type of newscast, you might flip onto a more humorous/reactionary talk show or radio that delivers the same news. As a Brazilian I volunteer to contribute with this video by saying that most of the movie doesn't come close to what Brazil really is, this birds are extint, the red ones are almost extint, the snake is a Gibóia not an anaconda, they have ridiculous soccer cliche, the people who cuts trees ARE violent and they will have guns (it so bad that the army and the police had to join forces to go against them), they didn't show one single native in the entire movie that goes on Amazônia (notice that Amazônia is not only the name of a forest but also the name of a state) and I could go on and on but nothing is going to change

Also originally there was supposed to be a scene where a native Amazonian tribe appeared to Linda and Tulio (alongside Fernando who was originally supposed to be with them) to show them the way where the Spix Macaws were (Kinda makes Eduardo's remark about there's no humans in the Amazon pretty ironic, but unsure if he seemingly doesn't know that Amazonian tribes exist in the rainforest he resides in) , but no idea why it got cut.
