Everything Wrong with Star Wars' Vehicle Design: The Clone Wars

I sort of stopped caring for Star wars for a while, but diving back into the universe to research this video has been fun. I forgot how much fun the original Battlefront games were. I decided to cover the Clone wars because that's my favorite era in the universe.
I've said it before, but it would hurt to say it again; this series is not meant to say that the actual designs themselves are bad, or that the game is bad because of them. This series simply takes a look at fictional vehicles from a realistic standpoint for fun.

Some things I wanted to talk about: 1. The AT-TE's armor may be all well and good for infantry based energy weapons, but not all weapons in the Star Wars universe are energy based. For example, the majority of the AAT's weapons are either kinetic or chemical, only the auxiliary guns are energy based. 2. I don't think the AT-TE could crouch to the side to allow the mass driver additional gun depression with how the middle leg articulates, but if it could, it would render the AT-TE either near or completely immobile. A much easier solution would be to simply make the mass driver turret bigger to allow the gun to depress more. 3. I noticed in the Clone Wars movie that the AT-TE seemed to dig into the cliff a bit, but I don't buy that as being plausible either. The prongs on the feet are much too smooth and shallow to hold any weight while climbing vertically.

How about reviewing Planetside 2 tanks? There is 4 of them: -Lightning (light tank) -Prowler(Terran Republic MBT) -Vanguard(New Conglomerate MBT) -Magrider( Vanu Sovreignthy MBT) For a game taking place in the 27th century it has pretty conventional design for tanks(execpt the magrider which uses spacemagicwitchcraft...)

Plus u forget to bring up the speed of AAT, it can literally do donuts around the AT-TE, and the rockets are meant for engaging multiple enemies independent of the main gun, as for depression, the main gun is meant for either long range or area that the vehicle is not facing, hence if a armored tank got close, rocket will finish it oof, and anything lighter will be picked of by the twin blasters mounted on the side.

I think the reason why the AAT has droid crew members instead of being a droid itself was because those tanks were in intended for organic crew members. Later in the war we some all droid vehicles like the gunship and the snail tank.

The cockpit for the ATTE always irked me. Lore wise, the 'glass' in the cockpit is supposed to be just a transparent version of that of the hull but is always depicted as glass in any visual medium. Also the fact that the cockpit sticks out from the hull just made it a bigger target with the window being at 90 degrees in stead of slanted like the hull. To fix it, I would suggest something like the droid tank with a small dome, moving the driver and commander back and removing the front troop compartment. Also never new why the gunner for the mass driver cannon could not just be remote controlled from within the hull of at least give the poor trooper a sliding cover to protect him.

@@arnowisp6244 That's only true if what you have a lot of is even a bit effective to begin with, and the B1 and OOM, while perfectly sufficient for cowing planetary defense forces into submission like at Naboo, are completely out of their league against a large, professional, well-equipped military force like the GRA, despite enormous numerical superiority (and that's before you factor in the force multiplier provided by Jedi leadership). Of course, it could be accurately said that they were never intended to win in the first place.

The ATTE’s armor isn’t weak, it uses STAR WARS MAGIC™ Energy Dispersing technology, meaning that the energy from blasts is dispersed throughout its hull and the damage is significantly reduced, allowing for thinner armor which reduces stress on its legs and the vehicles that transport it into battle. Also the ATTE isn’t the main battle tank, that goes to the TX-130T fighter tank.

Im pretty sure in Star Wars Lore, the 'glass' canopy on the Walker is actually a form of clear steel. It's the same as they use on the windows of Starships.

So, some counterpoints 1) The AAT does have a good amount of gun depression, as could be seen in Innocents Of Ryloth of Star Wars The Clone Wars Season 1, though to do this required angling the hull so the gun had space to do so. 2) The AAT in The Phantom Menace that Jar Jar hangs from had a "Booma" dropped into it, which seems to be able to stick to targets in addition to an EMP, potentially disabling more electronics that touch it. It's likely that the stuck Commander Droid touched some controls on his way down, and forced the anti gravity to angle to the side. Recoil is shown in TPM to cause the AAT to back up, but it can counteract the force to return to its original position. Overall this makes imbalance a moot issue, since we see it ably resolving it without fail. 3) The AT-RT's height is greatly justified by its top speed of 75kmh, which is only achieved because of those long legs. Wheels would be more stable, but sacrifice a lot of mobility, and especially a lot of ground clearance (they are shown to be able to jump over obstacles) which is a major advantage to have for the AT-RT as... 4) The AT-RT functions more closely to a self propelled gun than a motorcycle. We see the firepower of an AT-RT can destroy an AAT (Liberty on Ryloth) or light AFVs (Darkness on Umbara). It is very flexible in that role, similar to a jeep towed 37mm of WW2 when the guns were still effective. Finally, just a small nitpick, 5) the AT-RTs do have advanced AI that makes them handle like animals. This is a bit of deep lore though, so if you didn't know then that's fine. Overall though, I did enjoy this video. I hope you could do a video on Droid Fighters, Vultures are my personal favorite vehicles. I also hope you enjoyed making this video, since Star Wars has a rich universe to explore.

I dont remember which planet it was but during the Mandalorian Wars, they nuked an occupied Old Republic world to show the rest of the galaxy what just what kind of war they were fighting. Far as I remember, the world is still uninhabited even well past the Yuzon Vong invasion. To give some context Taris, a city planet similar to Coruscant, experienced total orbital bombardment by Darth Malicks fleet a few short years later during the Jedi Civil War. It was already a bustling and fairly prosperous by the time of the Galactic Civil War

@@DrSabot-A there are 4 other laser cannons up near the turret, but those seem to be some kind of light anti vehicle weapons since the seem to be locked and the fact that they look more situated to fire at targets that are around the AAT’s height. The ones I’m talking about are near the bottom of the AAT above the missile racks. They also seem to be locked in place but they do seem far better suited to take down infantry than the other 4 near the top. But I don’t think the AAT actually has any rear facing weapons.

@@KrisHandsome flaws of Mammoth? Suprisingly few. 1)They're comically oversized and overweighted, BUT still air transportable and have no trouble moving on normal roads and over bridges. So they're size is actually acceptable withing universe. 2)they're a big target and very expensive to produce, BUT they have repeatedly shown themselves as both cheaper and more durable option then just building several tanks to get the same number of guns on the target. They're too tanky. Plus inuniverse industry have no problem pumping out thousands of them in short order. 3)they're a big slow target for aviation, BUT ingame we see that they have modest speed compared to other vehicles, good maneuverability, they have their own AA missiles and they can take much more beating then expected. Not to mention all weapons used by aviation in games are high precision so smaller targets aren't saved by neither size, nor speed. 4) _it with its gramps Apocalypse tank had popularized quad track drive that Scorpion stole. Suprisingly it allows it to lose a track or even two and still be able to reverse back behind cover._ If I recall right its tracks also aren't single sviwel and have hydraulics to control their position so there's that. 5)twin cannon. Unlike all IRL example it had separate autoloader for both. Drawbacks: -It has good ammo options as it is shown being effective against infantry too even with railgun version and secondary missiles, it lacks even something as basic as dedicated machinegun though. Ugly Overlord says hello. - No active protection system. It's very durable, but that one would have helped. Paladin says hello. Not to mention all the possible design fuckups as most detailed version we've seen was in Renegade. I don't recall if Tiberium had one. There's also one in Renegade X, but it's fanmade. Versions in RTS games is too small to easily notice details and it's comically boxy to make it easy to tell apart from other units.

I imagine the AT-TE functions more like an APC to the clones than an actual tank. Something like the Saber would be more akin to a MBT. The Juggernaut would probably more resemble a type of mobile assault platform like the scarab from halo.

Ya forgot to mention the ATTE could hold enough rations and air to last the whole crew and troops for up to 3 weeks. And the armor was very strong and good at dispersing energy when struck. Some flaws to the armor were the belly of the tank and the joints.

@@MistahFox fun fact, the turret is remote controlled, just not well so they have a manual gunner for most instances, because the thing isnt a front line tank its a support tank. and the front cockpit has effectually more armour than any other bits of the tank. hence why its very bold in its design, they kinda want the thing to be hit. and adding coverage to the bottom would be both A) pointless because again not an mbt, and B) stupid because the thing is already slow youre now doubling the armour for the ability to not get destroyed by stepping on mines which mind you almost never used.

Also B1-Battle droids aren’t the AAT commander/gunner that role was dedicated to the smarter 00M commander droid, which also piloted the tank as well. Also those two turrets on the sides of the AAT are manned by those two droid gunners at either side of the tank. The pilot has two small front anti infantry blasters fixed to the hull at the very front. The AAT isn’t made exclusively for the CIS like most of the CIS’s early forces, it wasn’t until the Middle of the Clone Wars when the CIS deployed its deadly droid machines such as the Buzz-Droids, Tri-fighters, and HMP gunships. The AAT wasn’t exclusively made for the Trade Federation, as they were also sold to private defense forces and planetary militaries.

You've got it the other way around, the OOMs were the older, dumber model that required remote control from a mainframe to operate efficiently (or even at all in some cases, like at Naboo). The B1 was an upgrade to the OOM that gave it a degree of autonomy, the problem being that Baktoid cheaped out on the hardware to the point where any sudden change to their operational instructions was too much for them to handle (this along with the OOM's reliance on a central mainframe were also deliberate decisions because the Trade Federation was wary of letting their droids think too much and potentially mutiny). Doing this often enough resulted in each droid developing different behavioral quirks as well.

Z3r0_ The 00M battledroids were better at multitasking than the B1 due to their more specialized nature as the B1 was a generic droid with lots of different programming quirks that arose from their independence from a main computer.

OOMs do...which doesn't make sense unless it's a failsafe (which is probably the case - the Nemoidians running the Trade Federation were VERY worried about the possibility of losing control of their droids), otherwise they'd just follow whatever their last set of programmed instructions are, then stop.

Most others say the OOM was a variant of the B1 that had more autonomy and a better processor to allow it to function in specialized roles such as officer or security. So in all likelyhood your information about the B1 and OOM is incorrect.

They also make relatively stable observation posts if you want to sit at a little elevation and watch a road through a pair of binoculars for hours. And the gun is more accurate and powerful than that on your average speeder bike. I'm not saying they are great. But they are being sold a little short here.

@@AlanGChenery If you want elevation take a bloody drone to watch the terrain they could build droid that fit the purpose. A camera on a pole is a stable observation post for hours, tha't an over engineered solution for something that is hardly a problem. And tracks and wheels can't be jammed either. and even if you keep the leg i think there is a lot of improvment that can be made to reduce the leg size and the profile. And the gun is small and could be fitted on a speeder bike so that's not an argument for the vehicule.

The AAT has very good gun depressions actually In the Clone wars [The 212th Free The Twileks] clip where it aims down at Obi Wan right in front of the tank by aiming slightly off of the side of the hull and using the repulser lift for some additional depression. Also it could be possible that AAT's were designed to be manned with "human crew" instead with droids and having to completely redesign them was probably not worth the effort and cost. I also feel like the AT-TE high CG is countered by the two middle legs being offset to the outside making it pritty much unable to topple. Other than that the AT-RT has some crazy agility and speed another clip from TCW where Mace Windu deploys Lightning squadron to take out some AAT's shows that, so the walker having some sort of AI sounds like a good explanation

actually the lore reason for idiotic-ness is poor maintenance by some organics. the talking is the overworked processor. and this only applies to B1s. the AAT is crewed by the similar but more advanced OOM-series droids which are as smart as tactical droids (or slightly less smart, depending on sources. the T-series being made mostly for extra durability and as a scam to make more money off the seps)

3:20 You must not have paid attention to the clone wars movie, as the AT-TE begins to move again after almost being blasted off the cliff we can clearly see the walker inbedding the small 'toes' around the walkers feet into the cliff thus allowing it to climb up. The flaw of AT-TE mass driver turret were emphasized in one Rebel episode, where an AT-TE was stucked inside a terrible weather alongside 3 hostile AT-AT. Instead of simply control the gun from the inside, it was specifically required to have one of the crew manned the gun outside, exposed to the elements.

I think another issue with the AT-TE is what I like to call 'Bradley Syndrome' (anybody who's familiar with 'Pentagon Wars' will know what I'm talking about). It tries to be both a tank and an APC at the same time. It would've been better to make two different variants, an APC with increased transport capacity, and a dedicated tank with better protection and firepower. That said, I will say that it's a better design than the AT-AT that replaced it in most respects, due to a combination of the lower center of gravity and ground pressure and lacking the AT-AT's blind spots to the side and rear thanks to the turret and rear gun emplacements. The only thing the AT-AT has going for it over the AT-TE from a design perspective (and not related to its mass) is that it being higher off the ground makes the fighting compartment all but immune to mines...though this doesn't do jack shit for the legs that have to hold the damned thing up, and if those things go, it's a long drop to the ground... As for the AAT...oddly enough, concept art for the Phantom Menace shows that it was originally supposed to be capable of flying around more like a VTOL aircraft (this was even incorporated into the vehicle's aesthetics, as it was based on the Mi-24V "Hind-D" helicopter gunship). This would also explain the presence of the rocket launchers, which I disagree with about them being 'unnecessary'. Ray shielding against energy weapons is fairly common in the Star Wars universe, and while particle shielding against solid objects is ubiquitous on spacecraft, this is NOT the case for ground vehicles (some had shields, but they drained so much power that could go towards things like propulsion or weapons that it was generally deemed not worth the trouble - static deflector shields covering an entire area were more common), so targets that the main gun might have a hard time cracking could be dealt with using guided missiles. That being said, it might just be better to replace the main gun with one that could also fire kinetic shells if required (in fact iirc the AAT's gun was shown being able to do exactly that in the Clone Wars TV series) and have a few of those in reserve for that purpose, freeing up space at the base of the AAT that could be used for more powerful repulsors to improve mobility and make it a more stable gun platform, among other things. As for why the AAT had a crew, that's probably because it was originally designed for organic crews, which later proved useful in the early days of the Empire for separatist holdouts that found their droids being shut down by the master code broadcast from Mustafar (and in fact, it was intended that the Empire would have repainted AATs in their service in the Star Wars Battlefront games, but they instead got a reskinned TX-130, the Republic's 'medium tank'). Plus there was the fact that despite the overwheming reliance on droids, the CIS DID have organic troops in their ranks, which were actually considered more formidable opponents by the Republic since, while droids could be deployed in huge numbers they were tactically inflexible and not very bright, whereas the CIS' organic troops were usually well trained, highly motivated, and most importantly of all, were usually fighting a defensive war on their home turf. This is what made campaigns like Umbara such a nightmare for the Republic (before you even consider that the Jedi General leading one of the Clone units present was a traitor). Stick a well-trained and experienced organic crew in an AAT and you have a truly terrifying obstacle to overcome. Oh, and there was one more advantage that was left out in the video: in the Phantom Menace, despite the commander being overworked, the AAT was shown to be accurate enough to be able to engage and shoot down starfighters with the main gun (as an unfortunate N1 pilot found out the hard way shortly after taking off). Lastly, there's the AT-RT...which you have to understand is a patrol vehicle by design (it's in the name: All-Terrain *Reconnaissance* Transport) - it's basically a militarized motorcycle on legs instead of wheels. The high profile could actually work in its favor if you're using it as a perimeter patrol vehicle guarding a FOB or some other piece of critical infrastructure, even if it's a liability on the front lines. The leg design, while poor on rough terrain, works just fine on more stable ground, i.e. in a city, which makes it a potentially useful vehicle for occupation forces...if not for the fact that the exposed driver is easy prey for snipers. If I'd been the one building it, I'd probably just do away with the driver altogether and make it a droid with simple IFF protocols that make it engage non-authorized personnel within its designated AO, and deploy it in rear guard roles where its lack of intelligence isn't as much of a liability since it'd basically be a giant mechanical guard dog; this would also warrant a change in designation - I'd go with AT-PO, for All-Terrain Patrol & Occupation. At the front I'd just have the troops use speeder bikes like the BARC or the Z74 that started showing up later in the war.

As for the dedicated tank variant, I'd get rid of the troop and vehicle carrying capabilities entirely and add either more powerful motors to increase its top speed or a shield generator for added protection, plus I'd move the mass driver gunner into the hull and have that weapon be controlled remotely.

not all sources say the droids are inferior in all ways. for one droids (even B1s and OOMs) are supposed to have faster reaction speeds and reflexes then organics, ideally I would have organic platoon and even individual tank commanders, with droid crews and polites and gunners (an OOM shooting down a star fighter with a battle tank is incredible marksmanship). thus getting the reaction times and reflexes of the droids with the tactical flexibility of organics.

Clones were able to outmaneuver droids through improvisation, acting in ways other than how CIS commanders were expecting. Organic troops don't have this issue, and could actually out-think clones because the GAR's troops were bred for compliance (plus they had those inhibitor chips, the significance of which never seemed to dawn on anybody until it was too late), which came at the cost of initiative and imagination (with a few exceptions like the ARCs and Clone Commandos).

Usually the AT-TE doesn’t hold 20 troops. The front compartment usually is converted to a communications center, as shown in the clone wars show. The back compartment can also be converted to hold two at-rt’s. The whole walker is very modular Edit: the ATT has droid systems in it that assist both crew members. Also, it does have a lot of depression (lol). It is shown in the clone wars during the first episode actually, when a gun is pointed way lower than it needs to be to point directly at yoda.

one issue with at-te is that its clearly supposed to be a combination of a tank and an APC (armoured personnel carrier) which is a terrible idea as both vehicles are going to be attractive targets to the enemies for completely different reasons but by combining them into one you are essentially making it very easy for the enemies to kill two birds with one stone

Tbh I can see both clones and droids use those at the start of the war with all those flaws for 2 reasons: - kaminoans are good at cloning but thats it, they were also tasked with arming clones with their weapons, armor and designing/ordering their vehicles(we can see for example that most clones who didn't like phase 1 armor did it because it was cumbersome) - trade federation were using their civilian level technology for military use, with exemption of destroyers (but the were relegated to heavy guard duty in episode 1 and weren't that numerous as in later stages of the war). Their B1 droids original purpose was to be simple (in comparison to C-3PO for exaple) protocol droid. Their main ship was just giant container ship retrofitted to be starcraft carrier. So it's no surprise that their vehicles required crew because originally they probably were designed with organics in mind, federation just bought them for their droids and didn't bother with retrofitting because that cost MONEY.

A strong enough magnet can attract or repel anything, but we would be talking about an insanely powerful one for the size of the AT-TE that could be taxing on the power plant, or not, depending on how much space magic it runs on. And the CIS maybe sells AATs to biological races?

Thought on the AATP, perhaps the reason it has a crew, and such a small one, is that it was a vehicle in use by the banking clans before the droid army was created? A banking guild is more than likely willing to sacrifice crew efficiency for a lower payroll especially when the tank would likely be just a strong arm gun to scare off light pirate vehicular threats, not tank on tank warfare. It may have just been more practical to slap a cheap vehicle control package into a B1 and stick it in a vehicle they already had in production and weaponized and armored from the get go, rather than trying to retrofit a non combat heavy droid to combat. Makes sense especially when you consider that it's the only vehicle we see, and every combat vehicle the banking clans use that isn't explicitely for droids in the first movie (the skimmers and ships for example) has B1's crewing it, and heavier warfare droids are a later addition.

you missed to mention that the AATs turret is positioned in a way that the guns recoil while firing forward would probably flip the thing on it's back. It has huge leverage and seemingly nothing below it it to stop it from tipping backwards

well the reason the AAT is like that is due to the seperatist army being originally an amalgamation of different corporate armies and navies. this Tank is literally a prime example of corporate "Design by Committee" and was not designed for the B1 series of droids fun fact. but the OOM series security droids(essentially an army of mall cops) who are nearly identical to B1's but are infact networked through the use of orbital assets, namely a luchrehulk transport converted to it's controlship variation. this way the gunner can be commander at the same time. and the reason they didn't just make it a droid? why my friend that would have cost more money

So the AAT has a single man turret with an overburdened commander doing double duty as the gunner and a driver who can't see anything. Sounds like Lucas must have used a WW2 French tank as a blueprint.

2 things. One, Commandodroids are more usefull then normal droids. And two, the sepratist did not only used droids they also had living soldiers, thats why they disigned the thank to be fit with droids

The reason why B1 droids are piloting AATs is because, before the Clone Wars, the Trade Federation was producing weapons (AAT included) to sell to private military in the galaxy. Often, private military wanted only the weapons but not the droids to use in battle. This is also why B1s don't have weapons integrated to the base model and they have to carry guns manually.

While more or less correct, manufacturer of AAT wasn't Trade Federation but Baktoid Workshops, Trade Federation possibly originally crewed them with organic troops, but possibly due to constant shortage of trained crewman and abundance of (mostly) security droids, some of those droids were reprogrammed to fill that role

Ironically the "droid blaster" couldn't really be used by organics. Yes they were briefly in various scenes, but they were utterly horrible to use. Unlike almost any other blaster, regular use made the foregrip (the barrel itself) overheated. Droids couldn't care less. Organics on the other hand got burned FAST.

When you were talking about the AAT not being a droid in of itself, I really wish I was here earlier to say that it's because the Trade Federation designed them to be operated by organic crews OR B1s, because they could always sell them to planetary security forces that may not want droid crews/tanks.

Fun Fact. NBC has been updated to CBRN. Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear. If i am not mistaken, Radiological differs from Nuclear in that Radiological is less of an explosive danger like typical nukes and is more of a "dirty bomb". Leaking radiation over a large area without people knowing.

The ATTE has both magnetic feet and reverse repulsed tech on the feet ( which basically means it works like a repulsor but in reverse)

Keep in mind that when the Clone Wars started the trade union could not legally own conventional military equipment only 'security forces' with the excuse of keeping pirates at bay. This is why the AAT has droid pilots. They could legallly own security droids and they could legally own tanks, but not a droid made to be a tank. Having the security droids pilot the tanks was a cheeky loophole on their part.

There are a few criticisms regarding the AAT that bear noting. For example, it won't set off mines due to the fact that it hovers (though there may be mines that account for this in canon). Additionally, those auxiliary guns on the sides do have lateral rotation, and can both hit a single target when aimed at (though I believe this is not shown in any movie). Finally, regarding the rockets, the tank already required substantive space on its underside to make room for the hover tech, it just so happened that this left enough room for the rockets. The rockets themselves, incidentally, are of multiple types, for varying purposes, and encased in a heavy concrete layer (used to protect the hover tech). It does have its weaknesses, to be sure, but a lot of them are actually made irrelevant by some of the more obscure details.

I find it curious how the franchise itself more than once shows why vehicles with legs are ridiculous making AT-ATs to be taken down with only CABLES tied to their legs and the AT-ST being taken down by..... TREE TRUNKS, seriously then why Do these vehicles continue to be used with such large and clear design flaws?

If I remember right for the Clone Wars movie, the reason given is that the moon they're on has a highly magnetic crust. Which is the reason there's these big old citadels atop the spires on it; they were monastaries and mining facilities both, delving down into the metal-loaded rock they sat atop. Not a GREAT explanation but... Also remember how you said if one AT-TE goes down there go 20 clones? What about that one that gets picked off and goes screaming right down the side of the mountain?

The role of the 'Walker' is most advantageous to over come rough terrain that typical land based vehicles could not and when environmental factors make air borne vehicles to risky to operate. Their ideal terrain are thick forests, able to navigate trees and other natural obstacles with grace, cave systems where vehicles may be necessary, and rough mountains, where steep rock formations and dangerous wind conditions make it nearly impassable in other vehicle.
