Even as a kid, I was somewhat taken aback by how the super star destroyer was disabled by destroying the command deck. One would think that such a massive ship would have multiple fail safes to prevent total loss of control. It's like the ship was designed by Galen Erso or something.

Elsewhere in Star Wars lore, it is mentioned that using small support ships like frigates and corvettes was one of Admiral Akbar's tactical strengths. The small ships would shelter behind the larger capitol ships, then dash forward to hit weak points, like engines. It was called the Akbar slash.

EXACTLY. I'm surprised there are so few comments about this idiotic statement in an otherwise good analysis. The shield was still up, which was the reason they turned away, NOT because they somehow realized it was operational. And even if it were down, as you said, that thing had enough "close range" defenses to wipe out most of the rebel fleet. What was left by the time they neutralized the nearby defenses wouldn't be enough to take on the imperial fleet waiting for them.

Your idea for the rebels to fly closer to the Death Star would have been impossible. The shield was still up, so they could not get any closer than they were. Being stuck in the killing ground that had been set up was foolish, so they decided to charge the only position they could. You also missed Luke's big blunder. He knew Vader had detected him, so he should have realized there was a trap the second they were given clearance to land. Then again, he had so much on his mind it probably didn't occur to him, but he probably should have mentioned it to the others.

A good portion of it went of looking for rebels after finding look, they had ATAT, and other Special Forces with them, like Inferno Squadron, the economic version of Dark Troopers, maybe some actual Dark Troopers, maybe NAVY Commandos, and at least 1 Storm Commando was confirmed at the bunker.

I have three points of contention with your assessment of Lando's decision. The first being that they had reason to believe that the Death Star was incapable of engaging them (it was something made clear repeatedly, and that a lot of effort and sacrifice was made to indicate this). Secondly, the shields were not detected. Lando observed the conditions in play indicated a shield was up, but no vessels detected it. As a result, there was no ultimate limit they could determine as a safe zone to 'hug' the Death Star. Between directional weapons and an invisible field of death, one is easier to avoid than the other. Finally, there was no reason for the Star Destroyers not to shoot at the Death Star while the shields were up: planetary based shields are extremely resilient, and even a Star Destroyer's fire power is unable to pierce it (established in Empire Strikes Back). Indeed once the Star Destroyers are engaged, they clearly have no problem shooting back, and it's almost certain that several their shots still hit the Death Star. In fact, Lando fully expected the Star Destroyers to fire on them despite their position (and commented on it during the battle).

If Thrawn had been in charge, the Rebellion would have been finally crushed. Hell, any of Palpatine's Grand Admirals (minus Il Raz. Unfortunately for the Empire, Thrawn was in the Unknown Regions fortifying and building the Empire of the Hand. What does baffle me is why Grand Admirals Declann and Teshik, both very gifted military commanders, couldn't muster a strong offense against the Rebels. Granted, it is known Palpatine did coordinate his assets with The Force, but it does make me wonder how the hell can they still lose to a badly outnumbered Rebel Fleet. And @Frank Dees, if Vader were to lead the Empire, that's bad news for the Rebellion. Vader was a competent military commander and a keen strategist himself. Unlike Palpatine, who prefers to gloat and show off to Rebels about the futility of resistance, Vader wants to crush any resistance in the most efficient and brutal manner.

What would you think of of someone like Admiral Daala being in command here? Granted, she was heedless, blunt, and generally threw tactical flair to the wind, giving her a mostly mixed (slightly more negative) record. However, she was also energetic, decisive, and boldness personified, always going straight for the jugular (sometimes to the point of recklessness). I can see all of that working well in this scenario, as opposed to Piett's caution and Palpatine's idiosyncracies.
@sporkboy0827 жыл бұрын
nuclearguy165 Well, if Admiral Natasi Daala was there, she'd definitely be charging headfirst. As you said, she's heedless, bold, decisive, and most of all, reckless. At the same time, she's a very shrewd and crafty tactician. Her biggest weakness is that she lacked a Grand Admiral's tactical acumen, patience, and restraint. Not to mention she literally has no battlefield experience an officer of equal rank (like Admiral Piett) would possess. Honestly, a Battle of Endor under Daala would be a bloody stalemate. Neither the Rebels and the Imperial Fleet would truly gain a decisive victory. If anything, it could be a phyrric victory for the Imperials at the cost of nearly half of the task force. Rebels would only get badly hammered but a crafty tactician like Admiral Ackbar would live to fight another day along with whatever is left of his fleet.

@dawnknightx7 жыл бұрын
So one piece of criticism, that I understand missing since the movie doesn't really make it clear, is that the Rebels couldn't get close to the Death Star II until the shields were taken down. The shield created an invisible physical barrier, that's why the Rebels needed to use a stolen Imperial transport to even get close to the Moon of Endor. I imagine that if Lando hadn't sensed the trap, all those Rebel fighters would have just slammed into the shield like some of the fighters did in Rogue One. And the reason why Lando called for the Rebel fleet to get super close to the Star Destroyers is because otherwise their biggest ships were sitting ducks, trapped between a Death Star with an operational super laser and Star Destroyers preventing their escape. At least at point blank range, the Rebels figured the Death Star wouldn't fire on their own men or if they did, at least take out some of the Star Destroyer's with them (this one is explicitly stated). I do agree that the Empire had some bizarrely bad tactics.

But hugging too closely to the Deathstar would leave the Rebels vulnerable to it's surface-to-air defenses such as turbo cannons.... Agreed on Palpatine's insane ideas and penchant flair for the dramatic. He was brilliant at orchestrating long range plans that pitted factions against one another, removing political rivals, and concentrating power in himself, but he was just damn impractical at leading pitched military conflicts. Oh, and in defense of Palpatine's throne room on the Deathstar II, it was only a temporary throne room established for just this battle & moment the Emperor masterminded, purely to assist in turning Luke to the dark side. According to the Imperial Death Star Owners Manual that Lucasfilm & Haynes Publishing partnered on a few years back anyways. The novelization for ROTJ states Palpatine had no desire to ever live onboard any spacecraft that mandated such a spartan lifestyle be led. 'Ol Sheev liked the finer things in life, growing up as he did in the wealthy Palpatine dynasty. He needed his culture fix- trips to the opera, symphony music, books, art, and fine cuisine or else he wouldn't be there.
@darkjediknight29236 жыл бұрын
Yes Palpatine's plans were utterly brilliant. But he should not have tried to micromanage this battle. Ultimately though that fool on Endor opened the back door. Without that the Rebels would have been obliterated. Or else Luke should have joined Vader. As Emperor (natural successor and widely accepted as second in command), Vader and Luke (or else Vader can hand over to his son) would run a benevolent Empire free of the overconfidence of Palpatine and tolerance of Tarkin, and free of the corruption and apathy of the old Republic and Mothmas of the galaxy. Had the Imperial Fleet not been restrained, surely they would have obliterated the Rebels if they had been in "battle mode" versus spectator mode. With or without the Death Star. Palpatine should simply have observed from a safe distance aboard his luxury flagship. Whilst Vader and others get on with wiping out the Rebel scum seeking to reintroduce chaos. Same thing happened with Tarkin. In his stupidity he didn't even launch TIE fighters. It was left to a commander desperately seeking out Lord Vader to request that they try to do something.

Better space for cargo ships to land for resupply, and while a mountain would limit their mobility, a savanna has excellent sight lines and even ground for your walkers. Lando's own plan was to minimize fire from the Death Star. The Death Star wouldn't fire the super-laser into a chaotic melee for fear of hitting one of the Star Destroyers and the Star Destroyers were too far from the Death Star to give or receive mutual support with turbo-lasers. Speaking of turbo-lasers, remember all the turbolasers the Death Star in the first movie? A quick glance at Wookieepedia mentions the second Death Star as having 30,000 turbolasers (15,000 heavy, 15,000 standard.) For comparison: An Imperial-Class Star Destroyer carries closer to 80 turbolasers. Even fighting literally a hundred Star Destroyers would be less damaging. Granted, many of the turbolaser batteries were likely on the finished side, but we see plenty firing at the fighters. Either way, it would be quite simple for the Death Star to turn its finished side towards the Rebel fleet. It's a lot easier and quicker to turn in place than to fly around something. Depending on distance to the fleet, a single degree of rotation could span miles of travel around the Death Star. Besides, how many more ships would have been lost to the super-laser on the approach alone? Attacking the Star Destroyers was by far the safer, smarter play. I would say the Empire still had the fighter advantage (despite any shortcomings of the TIE fighter) even if partially due to numbers. But also, that was their first battle in the films where they used TIE Interceptors, which could outgun and outmaneuver X-Wings. Y-Wings which made up a lot of the force were quite obsolete at that point and B-Wings are not particularly suited to dogfighting. They're an attack craft. That only leaves X-Wings and A-Wings as evenly matched combatants with newer Imperial ships in a dogfight. But most importantly, quantity has its own quality, and the Imperials could build dozens of TIEs for every X-Wing.

Theory: The entire battle of Endor was rebel propaganda and in reality was a lot more bloody with a lot more rebels on the ground and in space. On the ground it was like a WWI battle with trenches and stuff. In space it was like the battle of coruscant with ships everywhere and ships crashing into each other and complete chaos. All in all, there was massive loss of life with the rebles barely succeeding. The death star would've been a lot weaker and this entire movie was trying to make the rebels look strong.
@BoschhammerActual7 жыл бұрын
When you think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense how and why the relatively small fleet at Endor was the largest fleet ever amassed by the Empire. The Empire may have had tens of thousands of Star destroyers, but most of them were off doing their own thing elsewhere in the galaxy, which also had tens of thousands of planets. This doesn't account for moons, asteroids, other celestial bodies, and even rebel ships stationed throughout space. That said, the Empire never really had a reason to amass a large fleet, as the Imperial-class Star destroyers were very strong and capable of taking out lots of rebel capital ships before maybe losing power until reinforcements arrived, at the worst. Lastly, each star destroyer, not even including the Executor-class star dreadnought and the Death Star, collectively carried thousands of TIE-fighters, which could swarm and overwhelm even the most powerful rebel fleets. If it weren't for the Executor getting kek'd by an Allahu Ackbar A-Wing, the rebels would have been absolutely annihilated at the Battle of Endor.
@GoldenLion1377 жыл бұрын
The one thing that always confused me was why the rebels just didn't send a ship or some X-Wings down to destroy the shield generator. Since the shield generator doesn't have a shield of it's own it could have been easily destroyed. With some good timing send in a few X-Wings to blow up the shield generator as the Rebel fleet comes out of hyper space to blow up the Death Star. And with the Imperial fleet on the other side of the planet the Rebels could have blown up the Death Star before the Imperial fleet could have come around to trap them.
@albertabramson31577 жыл бұрын
If you look at the primitive CGI from Return of the Jedi, it appears as if the shield generator itself has some protection. Also, the facility itself had armor so thick that they needed to go inside and plant charges within the building. More important, the rebels didn't realize that the shields were already up until their first attack.

The problem with moving the fleet closer to the death star is that you then have to contend with the hive of turbo lasers covering it. You've just sandwiched yourself between a giant ball of guns and a giant wall of guns. The star destroyers have no reason to NOT fire so long as the impenetrable shield is still up. Best option is to move away and just maneuver away from the main gun of the death star.

If I remember right wasn't it to level a few hundred kilometers of forest then put the shield generator in the middle or was that just Canderous Ordo and the Mandolorians plan to invade Kashyyyk? Makes sense, if you don't need to conceal the generator then leave it on open ground where the enemy has to charge your guns without the cover and concealment of the forest. If you combine that tactic with the network idea, you can even conceal the back ups and leave on standby should any problems arise at the main facility would be a pretty sound strategy, but again tactics vs plot.

The main inspiration for the Star Wars saga the Vietnam war. George Lucas was fascinated by how the Viet Cong consisting of a small band of rebels with limited firepower was able to fight off the United States military machine. The battle between the rebel alliance and the Galactic Empire was based around that concept. It was a David and Goliath story line. That metaphor was present throughout the saga from a single X Wing Fighter destroying the Death Star to the Ewoks defeating the Imperial Storm Troopers on Endor. These are real world concepts. The reason Navies don't use Battle Ships anymore is because all it takes is one small, fast, highly maneuverable boat with a torpedo to sink them. Even US Air Craft Carriers with all their firepower are unable to defend themselves. When they go out to sea they are surrounded by a fleet of smaller ships whose sole job is to protect the Carrier. This was the whole point the Star Wars saga was trying to make.
@zeeshanhudda99167 жыл бұрын
He was actually inspired by World War 2. Due to the fact that the rebels were more like the French resistance and Nazi Germany as the galactic empire

What I don't understand is why the Empire didn't throw every single ship they had at the Rebels. The Empire knew the Rebels are attempting to wreck the new Death Star. They could have hidden so many Star Destroyer's and Super Star Destroyer's that the Rebels wouldn't have room to move. The Empire could have hit them with literal millions of Tie Fighters. Further, they could have had millions of Stormtroopers, Biker Scouts, Speeder Bikes, and so on...the Empire could have won very easily. Alan, your Star Wars coverage is always appreciated. Every film in existence can be criticized and this goes doubly for Star Wars. We know you care for the series and it's always done with respect. The points you make in this video are good, with a few exceptions. The Rebellion engaging at close range was actually pretty smart. One, tactically, it means that their ships are entangled in the enemy formation, meaning they can break threw to escape if the Empire screws up and doesn't dispense its ships correctly to maintain their "net". Two, the Death Star now has to be careful when firing because it may take out friendly ships. Three, your tactical alternative wasn't possible as the planetary side (uncompleted section) of the Death Star are protected by a shield, so that entire area was effectively impossible to use tactically. They could have hugged the Death Star's completed sections (outside the area of the shield), but the shield was HUGE and the Death Star's turbo lasers were more dangerous than the Star Destroyers. Plus, the Star Destroyers could have moved to intercept (which they did anyway when the shield was taken down), the Death Star couldn't. Also, the assessment that only a Mon Cal Cruiser can go toe-toe with an Imperial Class Star Destroyer isn't necessarily... true. It is actually easier for fighters to take them on because the Tarkin Doctrine ships were never built to take into account the danger of Bomber class fighters (play Empire at War...sucks to watch your impressive fleet of Star Destroyers take heavy losses against a cloud of fighters). Also, the Emperor is the Emperor. Did he screw up, yes. But could anyone else have done better, no... because the Emperor had a nasty habit of killing officers who disagreed with him. He nearly kills Thrawn in Legends for disagreeing with him by refusing to take a mission. Thrawn is only saved because that mission turns into a disaster and he is shown to have been correct. Also, another theory is that the Emperor was using Battle Meditation and after he died, the Empire lost because without his presence, they lost all tactical coordination. I believe it was Thrawn in Legends, who first introduced this theory has he had already criticized Palpatine for using such a power to make puppets of his men, rather than having them remain competent in their own right.

Sorry but your assessment of the tactics are wrong. The Rebel fleet closed with the Imperials because of the fact the death star had taken out 2 rebel capital ships, with the clear and stated intention to force the empire to either stop firing the super laser or take out their own capital ships in the process , and this was effectively what happened. The rebel fleet made good use of the tactical options available to them under the circumstances given they did not know that a large number of imperial capital ships would be waiting for them , nor did they know the death star would be in working order, they did know of the inflexibility of imperial strategy and the use of aggressive offensive action would push the imperial fleet to break up.

Watching this video and then reading people’s responses pissed me off because it seems everyone forgot the facts you mentioned: 1) The shield was still up 2) Admiral Ackbar states “it’s a trap!” meaning he knew they had become pinned between the Death Star and it’s superweapon and the fleet with Interdictor cruisers which would prevent them from escaping via a hyperspace jump, 3) The Death Star was actively targeting capital ships, its range was limited by its positioning, yes, but it was in no way “fixed” and unable to fire anywhere but in a perfectly straight line 4) Lando gives his entire logic behind directly engaging the Imperial Fleet i.e. avoid the Death Star and “take some of them with us.” Thank you for actually know what you were talking about!
@Brave_Sir_Robin3 жыл бұрын
The reason why they couldn’t hug the Death Star was that the shield was still up. The shield crates a large sphere around the Death Star that is bigger than the Death Star itself. I don’t think anything can really pass through the shield so they would basically be out in the open. Thus, hugging the Star Destroyers was a better option.

If stormtrooper armor cannot withstand stone-age weapons, why did the rebels use blasters. They could just throw stones at them or hit them with sticks. Disney should have declared ROTJ a bad dream or something and rebooted the movie instead of doing sequels. ROTJ needs to be taken out of Star Wars canon and done again. When you watch the movie you immediately realize that Lucas got bored with the franchise and just wanted to finish it, no matter how. The movie simply does not fit into the Star Wars universe.

If I remember right, I read in one of the books that a similar shield was used for a base and some Bothan politician accompanied a Alliance attack force shuttle, he was either given wrong information or his ego and pride took over. The shuttle slammed into the shield killing all onboard. So the Rebels orbiting the Death Star II would have been risky from that shield alone, then there was the numerous batteries that were very much active on the surface.
