Grandpa was a vampire too btwe, I believe it's a the book version that goes into more detail but Grandpa is a vampire courtesy of the Widow Johnson and the root beer he drinks is actually blood. This is why his entire house is made from wood.

My theory about the grandfather is that he's a half vampire, like star, David and laddie. He keeps the hunger at bay by feeding on the animals that he taxidermies. His "root beer" looks awfully thick and reddish for bottled soda and he has intimate knowledge of the local vampire population and their ways. He's a half vampire who has been fighting the other vampires since at least the 70s.

There's also the question of if his eccentricities are just an act. He sleeps on the porch, claims reading TV synopses are equivalent to seeing the programming, and says a drive is finished before leaving the garage. Might say that last one is pretty shrewd. He's a rare grandpa who knows when he's too old to drive.

10:00 Another little factor: Max knows that the grandpa knows his secret. This we can infer between the final line, and earlier when Gramps ducks out of sight because Max has arrived for his date with the mom. Anyway, two explanations come to mind for pranks against Max: 1. Just kids givin' the boss a little grief. 2. Max may have ordered them to pull stuff from time to time so he can report it to various vampire hunters. If they make house calls, he can point to evidence he's being harassed by vamps AND see what he can suss about the enemy while they're there.

Correction on the Dynasty reference. These kids *just* moved to Santa Clara, and even if their grandpa didn't have a TV, I'm sure they did in their last house. Unless they had some insane case of amnesia that erased all memories of TV, and Grandpa had a secretly hidden TV that was never on camera. But yeah, erase a sin.

4:24 it WAS supposed to be Peter Pan reconceived with vampires. Joel had that changed since he didn't want to do a movie about just kids at that age. But that might explain any little genre identity crisis it has. (Even still has a Michael, named after Wendy's brother.)

in 1987 I had a tiny black and white "portable" TV. 8:30, talking about the bikes disappearing when they "terrorize" the house, that's assuming the bikes were there. Like turning rice to worms, if they can force visual hallucinations, why couldn't they force visual (headlight) and auditory (revving) hallucinations. Points off if they explain it, point off if they don't, it's like you exist to add points, not evaluate movies

And the reason why all the vampires are in Santa Carla - aka Santa Cruz - is that The Vampire Lestat, written by Anne Rice, had been released two years earlier. In which the vampire Lestat, who was an antagonist in Interview with the Vampire, woke up from a long sleep in Santa Cruz after hearing a hair metal band.

@kitbradley2689
@kitbradley2689 2 жыл бұрын
@@johhanwindsalor9478 Well, I made a mistake. Lestat did not wake up in Santa Cruz, but it was where he planned to reveal himself as a vampire. It's been a while since I read the book. And it is slightly more complex than "Anne Rice based part of The Vampire Lestat" there. There were also a couple of serial killers in California in the 1980s - the Night Stalker being the most famous - that also created a groundswell of urban legends and folk stories about vampires in the state. But for movie purposes, The Vampire Lestat's publication was the immediate prompt. All the California serial killers were also part of the reason that Rice put Lestat in Santa Cruz, too. But almost immediately after the publication of The Vampire Lestat, Santa Cruz saw an increase in vampire-related tourism. It's been fifteen years since I lived there, but they embraced the vampire kitsch.
