Same here. It'd be nice to have an option either to turn that off in the menu before starting or simply make it believable (and difficult) to actually cure the infection by, for example, raiding some of those underground experiment labs and completing a formula for a cure some more benevlent grunt was working on that you can then craft with rare materials. The labs are generally found in tougher POIs, so progress there is more or less built in. You'd probably be relatively higher in level before you could start crafting them, so that would preserve the management mechanic while still providing a "realistic" option for those who'd prefer to play without it. (Would make for a great quest were the base game in a finished state as well.) You can probably toggle it off in the mod's files somewhere, but having the option would be nice.

I spent probably 100 or more hours running Alpha 21 Afterlife, and it really is a good mod. I did have two gripes though... When you have the rain-on-lens effect and go past a light it is completely blinding, like a total white screen for me. This is a migraine trigger for some of us and something I wish could be toggled off and on. The rain-on-lens itself was interesting, but the lens flare just made it to where I stayed at base when it rained. Second gripe was the zombie AI or agro effect, I don't know if it has been changed, but I could crouch and do nothing, and zombies would eventually find me. Fight them and more would come. I don't know of this was purposeful or not, but it got to the point of more than mild annoyance for me and my other players. It's almost like you have a homing beacon and at a certain point just can't hide. We made it a practice to let them group up in one area and ran off to another area where due to spawn limitations it would be more "normal." Just my two cents, but I'd like an adjustment for that as well. Might have to make a mod for it, as the rest of Afterlife is very much to my speed. After close to 4,000hrs in this game I like the change of pace it brings.

My gripe was randomly dying for no reason. I KNOW what my infection was and it wasn't even at 10 each time. Wasn't hunger, wasn't thirst, wasn't bleeding or damage. honestly the idea of being guaranteed to get infected at some point with no possibility of cure, and nothing but a degrading experience from that point on, makes it pretty much a guarantee that I'll never touch this mod. Oh look, I spent all this time, did all these things, and none of them matter because I made one mistake, or worse, some TFP bug made it so a zombie hit me when they shouldn't have been able to, so I guess this run is just gonna do nothing but get worse from here... The config files are your friend here. Adding an extra function to a food or drink item that reduces infection that you can craft (I would set it to a rare high level item - but it can be whatever you want) is quite easy. That's all I'll say for now. The devs will probably add something like that at some point. I like the idea of rogue like. When you die you can come back as a new character. You have none of the skills, but the world is as you left it. You can get back into your base, but it will be hard again because you start as a new character with no skills.

There are clearly ways to manage it. It sounds like there may be a possibility of a cure, if you were high enough up the medicine tree. I would guess near maxed out. That's supposition on my part, but the phrasing 'no known cure', along with how some things are intentionally hidden from the player seems to include a possibility (perhaps not yet implemented). Or maybe I am reading too much into it. I'll definitely give this mod a try for at least a couple of times. The ability to mitigate the infection makes it interesting to me. The whole thing sounds very overwhelming, but also very promising. Definitely the kind of thing I want to try for myself. Really looking forward to the GNS playthrough!

I enjoyed a lot of things about Afterlife, but the hunger and thirst were far too harsh. I raided a restaurant POI, found lots of food, and somehow came out hungrier and with less food than I went in with. It's a shame, because it seems like a cool mod with so much to explore and figure out, but you never get a chance to do it because the hunger treadmill doesn't stop long enough for you to have that luxury.

A common foible with mods - the makers usually have their own idea of balance which is a far cry from what a traditional studio would do. Normally devs err on the side of easier, with optional challenges being the nail biting, hair pulling stuff. Modders often mistake frustration for challenge so nail biting can easily become the baseline. If you are not onboard, it can easily ruin the experience.
@lrinfi3 ай бұрын
Good to know. In fairness to the mod authors, I've never seen either a professional game or mod strike a good balance there in its survival mechanics. When it comes to food, I'd like the equivalent of three squares per day as a baseline. It's simply not fun to have to eat and drink *all the time* just to keep your avatar/character alive. We don't do that in real life. I'd prefer not to do that in a video game. Edit: Realistic Needs and Diseases and iNeed (for Skyrim) came close with a variety of settings to tweak it to suit the timescale to which you've set the game.
@CapObv3 ай бұрын
@@lrinfi Darkness Falls does a pretty decent job in early game food and thirst management. You can survive on apples and random veggies throughout the world, but it's tedious early grind stuff, as expected, but not impossible. The mid-game comes soon enough with teas and bacon+egg meals. Once you unlock meat stew, you're set for any playthrough into late game. Fruit Smoothies are the meat stew of liquids. Mods like Afterlife put a heavy emphasis on constant production to maintain your food and water. It should be interesting to see how this new version plays out.
@lrinfi3 ай бұрын
@@CapObv Haven't played any of the overhauls to date. Early game should be a little hairy. You're starting with nothing after all. (Though I'm pretty sure anyone would be able to cook bacon and eggs and boil coffee without having to read a recipe on how to do it. lol) I think the decision to offset the frequency and gravity of hunger and thirst with everything from skills to outfits in vanilla 7DTD has gone further to unbalance that aspect than anything else. That the avatar works up hunger and thirst during activities requiring exertion (sprinting, mining, etc.) is a good idea, but the mechanic in general is maybe a little too granulated for its own good. I imagine the temptation for modders is to granulate even further.

Well, as for "making sense," it's pretty much in keeping with universal zombie lore. Get bit; get turned. But I do think it would be best for the mod itself to provide an option to turn it off in the menu and/or provide a way to craft a cure at some point. Would widen the mod's audience quite a bit from what I can tell. I feel the same. Just as I don't like feeling like I'm actually at work when playing a video game (grind, grind, grind); I don't much appreciate mechanics that are so harsh and unforgiving, the game becomes an exercise in frustration. I'll probably just try and turn off that particular mechanic in the mod's files, if nothing else.

No traders means no quests, right? That's part of what I like most about 7D2D is that there is always a quest to go on, to go out and scavenge somewhere specific. So if this mod removes traders does it add more story quests to follow like say Darkness Falls? Or is it just a survive till you die kinda thing now like Project Zomboid?

Interesting. I despise those nonradiant "odd jobs" that are so not "quests" (and rely on rng like everything else), it's unreal. That's a terrible habit I get the impression other game dev studios have picked up from the likes of BGS. BGS (Ubisoft, EA, et al.) is making entire games filled with practically nothing but them now, still daring to call their games "RPGs". Thus, no doubt, why the term "lazy development" has entered the lexicon. It's not so much "lazy" as indicative of the industry's quest to make a fully automated game, now jonesing for AI to do it, imo. Whatever. "Mindless" is the best term I can come up with for them. They make sense for, say, bounty hunting "side quests", mods and the like, but I'd just as soon not see them otherwise. In a game like 7DTD, it's fine for them to be there on RWG maps for those who care to indulge, but too much of the "random" is being taken out of "RWG" as it is, imo. Just please -- by all that is holy, devs -- don't call them "quests".

@@lrinfi I prefer story, don't get me wrong. That's part of what I love about Darkness Falls. But I'm very 'task oriented' when I'm playing a game. So if I have something telling me 'go here and do that for a reward' I tend to do that. Usually when playing with friends I'm the hunter/gatherer of the group who uses those quests to go to locations and grab supplies. Even solo, being just... alone.. in a dead world with no tasks to do other than the usual 'survive' tends to bore me.
@lrinfi3 ай бұрын
@@justinr291 Still plenty of tasks to do -- cooking, scavenging, mining, crafting, etc. You're just not being told to go out and do them...for little to no "reward", in the case of 7DTD. But I get that a lot of players play video games, even exclusively in some cases, just to do..."stuff" (doesn't matter what)...and be rewarded in some virtual "material" fashion for doing stuff, mindless or no. Video games are just a distraction from real life concerns to them and nothing more than that. Give me a reason to be doing something, as in RPGs, and I'm pretty much okay. (And, no, "this will help our 'cause'" doesn't cut it when there is no cause to help and no specific way to help it.) There's also a bit of an exploration loop to develop and explore in 7DTD that I think has been severely neglected. 7 Days is supposedly "open world," after all. But there are no incentives to explore the game world, e.g. unique structures (like the Shrine of Azura in Skyrim; Dinky the Dinosaur in New Vegas; satellite arrays and lighthouses in many games, etc. that can be seen from just about anywhere) or natural landmarks like caves. There are a couple of caves in the game (that seem very out of place), but nothing unique to discover in them. So exploration is pretty pointless other than for scavenging purposes. Everything to find in every POI is generic rng loot and nothing more or special in itself, specifically in a nonmaterial way. There may be something else to discover in some of them when story mode comes around, but I don't hold out much hope for that other than the tiny bit of environmental storytelling that's already there. Many of the POIs, especially the newer ones, are pretty unique and interesting in and of themselves, imo, but I'd wager the vast majority of them will never be explored unless the player makes a point of checking them all out and there's generally nothing to admire about them with the exception of some exceptional voxel architecture.
@alexveselovsky55333 ай бұрын
No quests at all, and this means no POI respawn, no loot respawn, I spend 30+ days in the small town, with no bicycle, and I was stuck there, because I couldn't move resources to the new town... Coal is essential, but it only appears in the forest biome, when I moved to the desert, I was stuck yet again..
@justinr2913 ай бұрын
@@alexveselovsky5533 Yeah, I picked it up to try it out. It's alright, but the lack of trader quests is a down side to me. I've also encountered a few issues with.. I wanna say sand having no texture it's like a bright white... and if I click on the 'tailoring' skill it gives an error.

in my playthrough, ammo was SCARES AS FRICK. so...maybe not do the sheriff. the backpack and watch are pretty rad though. you don't get the leather backpack for like 20 hours of gameplay and in that time, when your str is low, and you're probably relocating your base....that leather backpack was pretty great.

I've learnt of Afterlife from your previous video on it and ... Because of how much more hardcore it is in regard of resources, it was a massacre when we tried playing with 2 or 3 friends. But solo, I am havin an absolute blast. This is the first mod that I am willing and enjoying playing as solo adventure, though I am playing in Alpha 21 instead of Alpha 22 build, somehow A22 does not want to work for me. But one day ... :) Definitely can recommend, just be ready to never be fully prepared, guys and gals.

The majority of changes here seem great! While I bought 7D years ago, I never got into it until just before/during 1.0. It makes a lot of missteps with its design, despite being pretty fun overall. One example being that dynamic world difficulty (zombies scaling to you) is fantastic, but it doesn't mix well with the current vanilla leveling system. One solution would be to have dynamic difficulty tied only to combat talents (freeing you to optionally take non-combat stuff without feeling penalized), or to have each level provide both a Combat Talent and Non-Combat Talent (and you can only spend points on the relevant talents). This philosophy works with or without use-based progression. Another improvement is POI variety (difficulty-wise), where Basic POIs should offer the same solo-scavengable gameplay they do now, but Hard and Swarmed POIs should offer escalating challenges for skilled and group players (and offer both far superior loot and probably unique loot you can only get from that harder content). Basically I want the game to try to offer a more challenging experience, but without enemies just being Billion-Hitpoint Meatshields, since that's the least fun type of difficulty in a game. Biomes also need love. The fact that I don't need special clothing to work/live in cold/hot biomes feels wrong. I would want it to feel a bit like ARK at a minimum (where you don't just instantly die with bad clothing, but it quickly becomes unbearable; in the heat your water would drain like 2x faster, and in the cold it's your food, and the most extreme stage of heat/cold should do outright damage if you don't have sufficient protection. Basically as a ~115 hour player who's spent a little time in other biomes, I still can't fully tell you exactly what *ANY* of them do, and that means the biomes have failed. It should be obvious from the start how each is different, and offer significantly different challenges.

Been playing it for a few days now and a lot of items in the game need their descriptions updated, for instance pipe baton says it repairs with short iron pipes on one screen, but actually needs pitch which you can see on the stat screen for the item. Repairing blocks is wonky. To repair wood blocks you need wood chips or something, which you seem to only get from breaking wooden blocks, not wood and pitch, which you used to create the block. Spider zombies can climb, don't fall off when hurt, and will attack blocks while climbing. I discovered that while messing around in creative trying to sort out a horde base design, and honestly that feature alone might keep me from playing it any further. Because they climb into weird places and just start destroying structural integrity.

i tried afterlife solo before 1.0 and was not eager to continue with it , too difficult and as solo player so loneliness w/o any traders or NPC maybe with the 1.0 release it will be ok , but still no traders and i think still no NPC , that is why i wonder about Undead Legacy or rebirth first to play with the 1.0 release i did not play 1.0 yet ... it seems quite unfunny but sure i'll watch any of GNS Videos here :D
