The so-called Honda Automatic are base around Centrifugal Clutch this is know as Semi-Automatic and then the CVT and new DCT unless it was a Hondamatic which had an actual torque converter to me I think base more like hydrostatic as it downside was it didn't have the traditional valve body and many of other parts like in a car or truck automatic transmission so therefore it couldn't truly automatically shift up and down all on its own, Now as for DCT it is a manual transmission but it has two hydraulically clutch that is controlled by a computer this nothing new as Formula One race cars have this technology even high end sports cars personally I'm not a fan of this just more things that can go wrong.

I am a wounded warrior and lost my left leg below the knee while in Iraq, so I can’t manipulate the prosthetic foot to allow me to shift. I’ve been riding a Can Am Spyder RSS which obviously has 3 wheels but mine also has a 5 speed dual clutch and works really really well. But if I had the money I would either buy an electric two wheeler or something with a dual clutch like the Africa Twin or BMW. Hopefully they will offer on other brands and widen the models soon. I’m ready to ride.

That's a great way to look at them. I loved driving manual pickups for ages and I'm so over that. I've only driven 'normal' motorcycles, but I think at this point in my life a DCT would be fine. I sort of look at it like a pickup now... if I'm city traffic I need a manual like i need a hole in the head. One less thing to worry about it and I trust Honda's engineering dept. The DCT looks so interesting from an engineering standpoint.

Talk shit all you want, boomers. Honda's DCT tech isn't new and has been around for several years. During that time it's been refined to near perfection. After misplacing my gear leg in Afghanistan I had a choice: 1) Quit riding altogether 2) Mutilate the frame and fixings of a previously standard bike using an ugly Kliktronic device 3) Buy a DCT Owning both the ATAS and CMX1100 I'd wager the vast majority of their haters have never been on either, no different from the car scene guys saying the same tired BS. Millennial here. Nothing wrong with a DCT. Just not something I want for myself. I want the control I get from a manual you don't get from a DCT. That being said, if the only way for you to ride is with a DCT, more power to you.

@@joemann7971 That's misleading. You get better control with a DCT. Using the paddle shifters whenever you wish it's superior in all aspects. Best tech in motorcycling. Squeezing a lever with your left hand and kicking a lever with your foot is archaic.

I’ve been riding scooters for the past 18 years due to the fact that I’m a left leg amputee and as such can’t work the standard motorcycle shifter. I love riding and always wanted to ride a “real” motorcycle without having to modify it before I even know if I like it. The Rebel 1100 DCT has my attention, I plan to get a test ride on one as soon as I can and buy it if it works for me.

Just received the Rebel 1100 DCT and got it for commuting in heavy traffic, but also still wanted something that I could take out on the highway and interstate for a weekend trip or on some curvy roads. It's been a very enjoyable ride and allows for much easier commuting in stop and go traffic.

I've been riding a DCT since 2015 and I really like it. I don't think I'll be going back. I feel like I am more engaged with what is going on around me with the traffic and the views. It ramps up the riding experience another level, at least for me. The only downside is low speed maneuvering is more difficult without being able to slip a clutch, but you get used to how to do it after a little adjusting.

I agree with the low speed maneuvers. I am new to riding and my first bike is a DCT, and it has taken a fair amount of time to feel confident in those tight slow situations. It has allowed me to be much more present in what is going on around me and checking surrounds in a intersection, less to deal with when controlling the bike. I have been thinking about moving up to the Rebel 1100 but the standard version. Just worried I will regret that decision later on as I hope to spend more time riding.

I passed the MSF Basic RiderCourse 2 on my NC-750x DCT last week, no discrepancies. I found it to be much easier than when I did the first BRC, on a ninja 300. The computer is good at feathering the clutch when you lightly apply rear brake and just gently give it some revs

@@mickleblade Yup, that's how it's done. The NC750 also has linked rear-to-front ABS so you want to get used to using the rear brake for almost anything as it makes your no-time-to-think emergency stop muscle memory action to just jam on the rear brake. I have been in this situation a few times and couldn't believe how well it worked. This wasn't my muscle memory from riding the bikes I grew up riding so that was another thing I had to relearn after going to a more technically advanced bike.

I have a 1976 Honda CB750A Hondamatic and it's an absolute blast to drive! Nothing beats the look on another riders face when you wave with your left hand at a stop and pull away. That, and it's built like a mini tank where most of it is made of metal. They don't make them like they use too!

Another benefit of having no clutch lever is the possibility to relocate the rear brake function to the left handlebar. (ex. XADV and other scooters). This allows for more balanced brake support especially under hard braking. As opposed to all braking being done with the right side of your body, which provides for an uneven effort. Some Africa Twin DCT owners make this modification too as its much easier to modulate the rear brake with your hand while negotiating some tight off-road maneuvers. Also with both feet no longer having operational duties they can thus be focused evenly and equally on balance and turning actions not to mention stop and go at stop signs is significantly easier! Plus on long distance rides you can place your feet anywhere for comfort and not risk losing reaction time for surprise events. (as long as your holding onto the handlebars! DCT,,, along with eliminating the rear brake and shift functions from your feet, makes for a better overall approach to riding. I have an XADV and love it.😁 I'm in the process of modifying my NT1100 DCT for left handlebar braking. (discussing warranty impact) The only drawback is if you have a multi-bike garage that has conventional manual and braking operations. Swapping to one of my other conventional bikes in my garage makes for occasional "brain fade" blunders. Grabbing what you think is the clutch and its the brake certainly brings reality back quickly! 🤣I know its somewhat of a departure from "normal" or "traditional" riding but I find its much superior.😊👍

I’m not a big fan, it will probably make manual bikes almost impossible to find in 10 years, and incredibly expensive, just like it has with cars in the us.getting more people on track is great for getting more race tracks, but getting more people on auto bikes only gets us more auto bikes, and makes our say less important in the industry.

My dad used to ride a Vespa gts. As an older guy he didn’t want to mess with learning clutch and all that comes with it. He got the rebel 1100 and he loves it. When I got my chance to test it (and I was sceptical on how good it would be) I was blown away. The shifts feel like any manual with quickshift, except you only hit the gas to go and brakes to stop. Big bike looks. Scooter accesabillity. Good job Honda! But still a clutch for me please.

I had a Scooter (CVT), and its still technically like a single gear, just a belt moving, so you don't feel or notice an gear shifts. It works pretty good. DCT in auto mode is sort of annoying. I have a DCT Honda Rebel 1100... I've broken 10,000 miles, and maybe have done 100 in auto mode. Clutch-less paddle shifting on it in manual mode is fantastic.

Been riding about 12 years and I just picked up a Rebel 1100 DCT. I was bitten by the DCT bug when I had to ride my fiance's NC700x DCT about 200 miles to bring it home. They're honestly really fun and they let you focus on the road more. I think we will start seeing more DCT or other smart shifting tech in the future, particularly from Asian and European brands. America being america will likely take a very long time to start adopting new technology.

I've actually considered getting the Honda NC750 DCT as a second bike/ backup bike for when my main bike is being worked on for whatever reason. It's not too expensive and it'll do just fine for commuting, which is most of the riding I do

Riding a DCT Honda on the daily, in inner city traffic, for two years now. Wouldn't do it with a manual, because it'd be far too much hassle to shift a quadrillion times for the half hour commute and in dense traffic and large intersections, there is more than enough to worry about than shifting, pulling the clutch, rev-matching etc. And with every bit of attention available for traffic and the road itself, it is safer and one less risk of making a dangerous mistake, even more so in the rain and cold. With work and family and the central European seasons and weather, we can dream all day about the open road and the twisting roads across the Alps, but the reality is we ride the bike for a daily commute or far too rarely at all. To me, it'd be masochistic to ride city traffic and filter lanes with a manual, but to each their own. Is it a real bikeTM? I don't know. But I know there's two real bikesTM in my communal garage, one is ridden on golden Sundays and the other one is supposedly a sport bike in good condition, but I've never seen it without the tarp for several years since I live her.

Good video! I have been expecting a video from you folks regarding the DCT, but I thought you'd probably joke on it. I have a DCT bike, and a bit of background: this is bike #32 between my wife and I. I got my first motorcycle in 1967, a rather clapped out Honda 150 Dream. Age 14. My Mother said, "If you get a motorcycle, you can't live in this house." I called her bluff - she didn't like it one damn bit, but I got to live at home. After a year with that bike, it was on to the "big iron" of a Honda CB350, and then a 1969 Triumph Bonneville; my now wife and I dated on that bike in high school. Riding is my passion and has been since that first Honda 150. Nine Harleys, four Goldwings, a couple BMWs, and a bunch of other fun bikes over the years. Then, nine years ago, a deteriorating hip made it too painful to toss a leg over a motorcycle. I dejectedly thought I was done riding. My wife suggested we get a couple small scooters. I literally scoffed at that idea. Being a married guy, we compromised and got a couple small scooters. From the first ride, I had that joy of riding again. Honda PCX 150s, I felt like I had come "full circle" from that Honda 150 Dream all those years ago. I thought I would miss shifting... I didn't. I moved up to a Vespa GTS 250. Then, a GTS 300 HPE. My wife went with a Yamaha Xmax. When the hip got to the point that I had to use a cane (my wife bought me a carbon fiber folding cane with flames on it!) that I put under the seat of my Vespa, I decided to go for a hip replacement. Within a year, I could put a leg over a motorcycle once again... if the seat wasn't too high. My wife encouraged me to get another motorcycle. After 9 years of riding scoots, I started looking into a DCT bike. I "tried on" the Honda 1100 Rebel DCT, but it felt cramped. The NC750X was too tall for me. I liked everything I was reading about the DCT... that led me to a previous generation DCT, the Honda CTX700 DCT. I bought the best example, lowest mileage version I could find. I was hooked on it from the first ride. DCT is something that you need to live with to understand how to best use it - it truly has the best of a manual transmission with the ease of a CVT. I use it in Sport Mode most of the time, with regular use of the paddle (trigger) shifters for up and down while cruising through the twisties. This bike fits me and has plenty enough performance to keep me happy and entertained. Some of the motorcycle pressed have called it underwhelming... based on putting in it Drive or Sport Mode and putting a few miles on it, riding it like an "automatic transmission bike." Too bad they didn't give the bike the opportunity to show what it can do. Just like high end sports cars use paddle shifters for ultimate performance, the DCT Hondas can be ridden similarly. And, I still chuckle to myself as I pull away from any stop with the smoothness of the DCT; it shifts faster and better than I can (with 55 years of riding experience), no stalls, no missed shifts, no missed neutral. We are now a month and a half into a three month stay in the Black Hills (we're retired), and are out riding almost every day. This DCT bike continues to impress me. As I said: riding is my passion. It isn't just for you whippersnappers. Thanks for the video - I watch your videos each day when I'm riding my bicycle. And thanks for not goofing on DCT, as it definitely has a place for some of us on two wheels, and there is no doubt that your videos influence a lot of new riders. Ten years ago, I would have scoffed at DCT, just like I initially did regarding scooters. I think the tine on scooters made me more open to what the DCT brings to the riding experience. I just installed a Rekluse auto clutch in my '21 SGS a couple days ago, only broke one spring plate bolt but got it taken care of ASAP, and will never go back to a stock transmission. I've heard stories about losing low speed mobility but not in my situation. I feel like my low speed skills are much better now especially knowing my bike isn't going to stall hearing it at such low rpms with the clutch out. Highly recommend

DCT is definitely the future of motorcycles. As an owner of a DCT car for the most part I love it. Put it into automatic and its just like any other automatic but switch it to manual and it will sit there in 2nd gear all day so long as you don't hit the red line, when the tcu will shift the transmission to protect the engine. Plus shifts are faster than anything I could have done in my previous car. I think it will help riders focus more on riding than worrying about shift. Plus everyone can then just blip through the gears coming up to a light. Its a win win.

That shift decision is part of why I haven't gotten a DCT car yet- if the car will shift up or down to protect itself, but I'm relying on it to stay in a certain gear, I'm more likely to either break the engine or transmission by adding an extra shift, or get rear-ended because I'm now too high a gear. If they'll take that decision-making process out of the computer, I'll be much more willing to buy.

@@shadowmancy9183 Every DCT transmission I know has the option of manual shifting. I just don't see the advantage of this, since the computer chooses the best gear for me before I see the need. I think you need to test one, but it has to be one or more days just walking with the DCT to understand it better.

@@wallacemjr I've tested Toyota, Mini, and Ford. I almost over-revved the Mini because I downshifted twice, but the computer added one more downshift, so when I hit the gas I was almost at red line. Automatics are fine for what they are, but DCT needs to have the option of shutting off the computer safety before I'll look at them as a viable option compared to standard. When the car continuously behaves in a way that you aren't expecting because the computer is guessing how you want to drive, it creates a less safe driving environment. I want DCT to let me stall the car if I don't pay attention.

Trying to remember if you folks have ever mentioned the CTX700… DCT is nice especially in stop and go traffic or if you have left hand/arm/foot/leg injuries or disabilities. This summer I’ve been dealing with a left wrist injury and my KLX is painful to ride while my CTX with DCT isn’t. I think the KLX is getting sold soon and I would only maybe replace it with something like a Versys 300 which has an incredibly light clutch pull. Would like to see CVT scooters of all displacements come with full size wheels to better handle crappy roads. Tiny wheels allow for lower seat heights yes but Midwest roads sometimes have potholes large enough to eat 12” wheels.

I'm also a CTX700DCT owner and fan. Driving my last bike in Washington DC stop-and-stop traffic gave me bursitis in my clutching arm, and I had to stop riding (the bursitis went away, but it took half a year). The CTX700DCT lets me commute again, plus it makes for great day trips all over the area. I CAN manually shift... but I'm just as happy letting the bike do the shifting, and I just enjoy the ride.

I have the original DCT, a VFR 1200, and once I got on that; I've never wanted to go back to a manual. 1/4 mile in 11 when ya want to and fun one handed riding and waving around town the rest of the time.

Africa Twin 1100 DCT and used primarily for off road ADV use. The DCT frees up my left foot while on technical spots and my left hand allows for manual shifting. I had my doubts but after riding DCT for 2 years I can't see myself going back.

I have a 2021 GL1800BD and I would only consider the standard MC transmission on a dirt bike. This is from a guy who hadn't even had one of those new-fangled quick up and down deals in the past-- just an old Harley and Suzuki boy. DCT is so freaking quick, and just let me say awesome at any speed-- even low speed.

I like this, for some reason my brain can’t grasp clutch, shift up down. I practiced on a course for hour and hours when I wanted to learn only to get discouraged. This is the kinda bike I’d probably be most comfortable on.

Aprilia had an 850cc V-Twin with a CVT and auto/manual modes they called the 'Mana'. Two riders, one on the very similar but manual transmission Aprilia Shiver sports naked and another on the CVT Mana raced around Willow Springs circuit and the CVT auto was a full second faster for both riders. They put it down to the CVT keeping the motor in the meaty part of the torque at all times while the manual was simply less efficient with more things to do and spend your attention on.

Not for me personally, there is just something about that down/up shift, rev matching fury that is a standard liter bike, fun factor would go right out the window for me, however if it gives opportunity to riders who may not normally be able to ride then bravo. Be safe out there Fam.

I have both an NC750X DCT and a GSX-R600. Very different bikes. If I want to go long distances, relax and enjoy the ride I take the NC. If I want excitement for a shorter period of time, I will take out the GSXR. NC is comfortable but arguably a bike version of a station wagon. Gixxer, loads of power and fun, but very uncomfortable after a while and no storage. Also, NC 2.8-3.2 litres per 100km regular gas. GSXR 8-9 litres per 100km premium gas.

I'm more open to DCT over automatic, especially if the shifter stays in place and isn't overridden by the computer guessing what you're trying to do and making you do it an extra time (a problem I'm having while car shopping, almost redlined a Mini because the computer decided I needed to downshift before I dropped two gears).

My goal is to eventually get a bike with an automatic transmission, but, the price levels are just way to high for me to justify it. Even slightly older models, like a 2016 Honda CTX700 N DCT still sell for very high, if you can find them. I looked in my region, and within a 250 mile radius, there was one used 2016 CTX700 N DCT selling for $6500, and it had over 6000 miles on it. The only "New" automatic style bikes you can get are the Goldwing, a very expensive buy, or a Honda 1100 DCT (MSRP $9299) a Honda Africa Twin DCT (MSRP $15,299) a Honda NC750 X (MSRP $9299) or a trike style Can Am Ryker 600 (MSRP $8400). Really the only other viable option then is to just go full CVT and get a maxi scooter.. something like a Burgman 400, Kymco AK 500 or BMW C400 GT, but even then, the price is insanely high if you buy new, approaching $10,000 in some cases.. Market needs more viable options in this category, in my opinion.

Can Am Ryker is a CVT, there are no gears. The Semi-Auto Can Am Spyders are similar to the manual mode DCT in operation, but there is no auto mode, you have to click to upshift. It will downshift to prevent the engine from stalling though.

I bet they are all fun in the right situation. Ive ridden everything from high strung dirt bikes to twist and go scooters like the zuma 125. Autos are nice to have in traffic. Especially on bikes like the nc750 where you can still select gears with a button when you want to. I plan on picking up a 2022 super cub next. Never had a bike with that super cub/trail125 type transmission. With no clutch handle and neutral all the way down. But I’m excited to give it a shot. Damn sure won’t be touring on it but i bet it’ll be great for commuting to work and bopping around town. We live in NC and go to NC and SC beaches regularly. Would be cool to throw it on a hitch carrier for trips like that and take it off and ride around on slower roads like ocean blvd which never goes above 35mph anyways. I’ve rented scooters at the beach and had a good time. In the right situation any bike can be fun. Hell I’d own a proper scooter if they didn’t have that liqourcycle reputation. Im also all for more people getting on two wheels.

Im just as skeptical about the dct. I always prefer traditional coz it’s simpler. But since i live in a congested city, it’s a struggle at times having to cluth-break a lot. I tried this dct and i can see the difference in ease of riding. It’s less tiring. It’s slower though, but if that’s not a problem with you, this dct bike is a fantastic option for those who don’t want operating a clutch.

Yammie I applaud you for the comprehensive and accurate explination of different transmissions available to riders today. (Not to be THAT guy, but) I used to work for a major DCT manufacturer in the automotive industry, and DCTs are simply the best transmissions out there (in terms of performace and comfort) and ATs are a very close second. Honestly, I don't know why MTs still exist (actually I do, but let's not read too far into that statement). Actually, let's read into that statement! One thing you didn't really touch on in this video is the economics of production. Like most things in a free market economy (which both automotive and motorcycle industries are, for the most part) supply is driven by demand. MTs don't exist in the Automotive side of things because of lack of demand; only something like 5% of vehicles sold in the US are MTs. That means it's more expensive for a manufacturer to develop and market a MT than an equally as capable AT (although some still do, God bless em!). In the Motorcycle industry however, things are flipped. The demand is for MTs, and therefore ATs (and DCTs) are expensive to fit to a bike. However, just like in the automotive industry where in the 70s and 80s demand flipped from MTs to ATs, I expect the bike industry to follow (see my mention of DCTs being the best trans available). Now, I've never ridden a bike with a DCT, but I expect (as with all things Honda for example) they're pretty darn good! That means, as people ride them, and like them, the demand for DC/ATs will increase over time eventually making MTs obsolete. Throw electric bikes into the mix (which as you mentioned don't need a trans) and the demise of the MT comes even quicker. ATs are simply the normal process of tecnological innovation and we should embrace and champion it. While at the same time honor and appreciate the past. Enjoy the MTs while they're still here, and welcome the ATs as they increase in popularityt as they're pretty awesome too!

As for the "demise of mts" that will never happen even now people love mts in cars even tho they do prefer ats and agree the idea that they are good. Some people love the fell of control and just the feel good. I have some people i know who have both at and mt car which he uses how he feels for the day. We are humans as much as we like confort and ease of operation we do find happiness on feeling and even if it is hard we find it worth it. Just my thoughts

Never mind, the $1,000 option of an automatic transmission. That alone makes clicking the option a nonissue. 2.) Well, maybe the performance crowd would like it… Once again, it’s irrelevant in this scene also, because there are different kinds of shifters out there offering unparalleled shift speed. There is a reason why only Honda is selling this tech… Overall, it’s tech that will only catch a very small niche market. Time is better spent on making a proper EV or DCT bikes

@@kell7195 Yes, I rode one. But it's a CVT. Ugh. And at highway speeds 120-135kph the XADV is sublime. Stunningly smooth with lots of reserve power. However as you point out its pretty good value by comparison. Long distance comfort the XADV is is hard to beat. But for all round use the ADV 350 is a better value.

I would have failed the MSF Basic Rider course if the bikes were automatics. My glove "stuck" to the throttle and clutch usage saved me (and my graduation.) No one had ever seen a Kawasaki Eliminator 125 scream around the final sweeper so fast, scraping the exhaust.

In Australia, you have a CC limitation of 660CC. I would imagine its the same in most places. As such, Honda did themselves a huge disservice by going from 670cc for dct bikes like NC700 etc to 750cc. They should have removed 10cc from the existing NC700 variants to meet this specification and pushed these bikes as a entry for the learner / provisional market which is crying out for a below 660cc automatic motorcycle

As somebody who wants to get into riding (can't afford it yet and will have to convince the wife that it's not death on wheels either) I like the idea of a DCT, , , a lot, one less thing to worry about. One of the first bikes that I was interested in getting was the NC700 with a DCT. But as I've gotten older and had more exposure to bikes I'm not as interested in DCTs, the only reason being is that they're still not mainstream yet, and getting one as a first time rider means that I'll likely either have to stick with DCTs (or other forms of "automatics", or have to releanr how to use a manual if I got another bike. I'ts one thing if you've been riding a manual for years, got a DCT, and switched back to a manual, but something entirely different if you've never ridding a manual outside of the MSF, spend years on a DCT as your first bike, then switch to a manual later on down the line.

@@GrumpyIan The gas savings might be an argument except that since the pandemic hit, I've been working from home. So saving gas won't be much of an argument in favor of getting a bike. But, since I work from home, we plan on eventually going down to one car to save on insurance, registration, and maintenance. However, I do still go in to the office every now and again for in person meetings. Because of that, I'm thinking of giving it a year or two after we're down to one car to bug her about getting a bike to get to the occasional in person meetings and after we're had some time to (hopefully) reap the savings of owning only one car.

We just got a Honda Navi, it's definitely a scooter- with the CVT, but it's super easy to ride. It's slow, don't get me wrong, but it's got what you need for getting around a smaller city. The best thing is it's gotten my wife into motorcycles. She actually wants to learn clutch now. I love playing on the Navi, it is damn easy to ride, I'm sure I could teach anyone to ride on that thing (motorcycle concepts and handling at least).

But you gotta know what you want, if you have good side street access in your city and don't need to go much about 50mph at any point you're golden. Also 10 miles commute is kind of my range of whether or not I'll be taking a bigger bike so I can save time and use the highway. All up to you, though. It's a good little machine for a great price.

Probably best to start on a small manual so you learn to shift although the NC750X feels extremely light because of the angle of the cylinders and the gas tank being under the seat.

I had one of the first NC 700S DCT in the UK and had to wait ten years for them to produce the best DCT for me in the CMX 1100, the Africa Twin is too tall for me and also the new NT1100 is too tall but I think the Rebel beats them both on looks and practicality for me, I never go off road or tour for hundreds of miles abroad. I have got myself a tourer a 2022 Honda Cub 125, why have things easy when it is an adventure doing 500 miles plus in a day on a 125 with all your gear.

How do you wheelie an automatic or get the front end up over logs or puddles? I’ve never ridden one so I can’t really give an opinion but I’d give it a try if I get a chance to. Seems like the rider wouldn’t benefit from a bike being auto though. You’d actually be giving up the control that the clutch and transmission allows you especially off-road.
