As a person of colorblindness, thanks for remembering our struggles in the art community! Color is hard, and rather intimidating, especially when you're not able to see them!
@triskets3411Ай бұрын
I always suffered from oversaturated paintings. My values and forms were always spot on, but my color balance and saturation was always wonky. People always told me Bout simultaneous contrast, but I had no idea how to use it. I was given clear instructions one day to play with the greys in a saturated drawing by opening up the color slider, lowering the saturation to the left, then sliding the color wheel SLIGHTLY to the (cooler or warmer) color I wanted, but only subtly. If you don't do it subtly, you just end up punching it too much. Changed my life.
@jovannydiazabad61237 күн бұрын
Complementary colors make colors you paint in including something like 50% gray look more saturated than they actually are. For example if I paint the whole canvas purple and I want colors that look like skin tones instead of the usual colors you use red, it doesn't look like skin when surrounded by white or gray but when surrounded by Purplish colors that are also saturated it will look like a skin tone. Here's something you can try fill areas of the canvas with different colors (specifically dark blues and purples) at maximum saturation to see clearly what this effect is (the more saturated the complementary color the stronger the effect). After filling the canvas put a blob of brownish/ochre color (basically desaturated orange) with saturation no higher than 20 and another one with 50% gray compare these colors when painted opaquely on top of the dark hues blues and purples then place them on top of pure white. When you have that brown on top of blue it should look not only brighter in value compared to it surrounded by white but it should also look orange and more vibrant. If you visit Huevaluechroma.com you can look for Color Constancy which will give you all this and more on how colors and Color Vision work

I LOVE COLOR THEORY RAHHHHH 🟥🟧🟨🟩🟦🟪🟥🟧🟨🟩🟦🟪🟥🟧🟨🟩🟦🟪
@hollowedboi5937Ай бұрын
So what I take from this is WHEN I get to the color theory section of fundamentals when drawing characters, I should research more about color & value relativity, and specifically about values (colors too) is contrast building intrigue. Often areas without light seem to have a higher level of darker values while lighter areas are higher in value, meaning more or less saturation as well based on the shadow and light areas. And lastly for sure color harmonies at 8:00 and the reasons why to choose one or the other rather than just loosely putting colors everywhere. Often times regardless of what harmony or how many colors you are sourcing from, there will still be the design principle of big-medium-small and contrast, so have one of the colors be the dominant color, the others secondary, and a few as tertiary/accents depending on the harmony and intention. Specifically for stuff like the split complimentary and tetrad color schemes, it feels like just complementary colors are dominant while the other two are meant to supplement the dominant colors a bit, coupling with each other based on if they are on the warmer side (red and orange for example) and/or the cooler wide (blue and green for example) Additionally Seemingly the more connected the colors are on the color wheel, the more "cohesive and relaxed" the art may feel, while the more analogous and separated the colors are on the color wheel the more dynamic and focused something may be. Not that there cannot still be a dominant color with something like analogous but more so about the mood of the piece. Maybe. I'm inferring. uhh color and light scary but they seem like once you get a good grasp, your pieces will look a lot more finished and cohesive. And you may be able to put even more emphasis in your drawings on mood and focus of a picture. So... while I feel like I've been on the anatomy and gesture phase for a bit long now, I'm looking forward to dipping my toes in when I start actually focusing on light and shadow shapes and implementing color here and there.
@Tobby_Ай бұрын
Nice analysis. I personally find colour theory and shading to be incredibly simple. But I'm still tryna get the hang of anatomy and gesture.(Those are my weakpoints) Btw complimentary colours should have 80/20 ratio
@nomoretwitterhandlesАй бұрын
@@Tobby_ I second this. Complementary (with an e, not i) colors work well because they "complement" (or, "complete") each other. Completion is never truly 50/50. 70/30 is still a good ratio for complementary colors, and so is 90/10, but 80/20 does generally look the best.

This video (thanks for the video btw) makes me think about Concord. I've watched some videos analyzing the character designs from that game, and one of the most grievous sins that condemned that game to failure was, they say, the color choices of the design. They weren't distinctive enough. It makes you think if the developers were effectively aware of this, which seems like basic stuff for a professional.

I thought a green card was a good thing? Anyway, he changed it because the first blue was already kinda dark, but that's just what he had recorded so he had to use the clip. The only thing that changes is... just the color. His point is still correct, and it still would have been correct even if he didn't change the color. He only changed it to make the contrast more obvious to beginners. Which is, you know, kind of his job?

Thank you for the hard work, Mr Marc, here's my fee of a comment, since I'm already subbed :D I must say, color theory is deeper than I expected. I do know of the color compositions you mentioned in the video, (shoutout to Blender Guru for showing me these concepts back in the day when I was starting), and I have yet to master it. I always have trouble in one way or another; because yes, red, pink and purple are analog colors and will work well together in a drawing, but that's where my knowledge ends. How to distribute those colors so they are pleasing and guide the eye, what amount of one color to use as main and how to scatter the rest in a balanced way, being mindful of the saturation and value of those same colors... that's always a headache and I am confident to say I butcher it every time. If you drop a couple more tips on this matter, lil' poor me will be more than grateful! (45% is an awesome discount, still dont have 300 bucks available... sorry :C)
