Gout is a form of arthritis affecting your joints. It’s characterised by swelling, pain and redness on your joints, particularly near your big toe. Here we have Dr Daniel Atkinson, the Clinical Lead at Treated, to tell us what gout is and how you can treat it.
Gout is a condition that affects your joints causing painful swelling. It’s caused by the build up of uric acid in the blood, causing it to accumulate and form tiny crystals in and near your joints. It usually forms quite suddenly and can last anywhere from a few days to weeks. You can prevent gout by limiting the intake of red meat, shellfish and sugar. Gout can be treated with ibuprofen to reduce swelling or Colchicine to reduce uric levels and ease pain and inflammation.
