Everything You Wanted to Know About The Ferrari 308 GTB

The Ferrari 308 GTB one of the most well known and loved Classic Ferraris. In this video we go over the details of this 1977 US model carbureted Ferrari 308 GTB s/n 22641, along with some buyers guide tips and information on the extensive restoration of the car. The Ferrari 308 was first introduced to the world in October of 1975 at the Paris Auto Salon. The Ferrari 308 first started as a Fiberglass bodied GTB, later it went to a steel bodied GTB then the GTS which is not a full convertible but rather a targa top. As a replacement for the 246 GT, the Ferrari 308 GTB was the first of Ferrari’s higher-volume, smaller-engine V-8 exotics, it was built to appeal to a wider buyer pool versus Ferraris flagship V-12s, it was the first of the long line of V8 Ferraris that have evolved into Ferrari's massive commercial success.

I love my '82 308. So many negative videos about these on KZbin, but the secret that us owners all share, is that they're easy to work on yourself, affordable cost of ownership, and that you get to own a vintage Ferrari without being a millionaire. (Especially the two-valve GTS Bosch Injected) I actually hope mine doesn't go up in value. I sincerely hope that it stays attainable for a large audience in the future. Thanks Colleen! Coleen, the word you are looking for to describe the driving experience is ‘visceral’. A car like the 308 is a real delight to drive. More modern Ferraris are infinitely faster, but arguably less pleasant, less involving from behind the wheel.

I do love Ferrari 308 cars, for me I couldn't afford one. I do own a pontiac fiero gt, 1987. I am the mechanic who keeps it running and looking like new. My other car is a 1999 lexus ls400 that is also in mint condition. I love driving them both being an Italian American man. The reflectors on the rear of the fiero gt say made in Italy, made my day. love youe video's. Thanks for all your information on cars.

I totally agree with you on the personality and fun factor of an older car. I bought a new 14 Mustang GT back in the summer of 2013. It was Grabber Blue with the 5.0 and 6 speed transmission. It was a fun car but lacked something. I got bored with it after 2 years and ended up trading it on a used 13 Shelby GT500, also in Grabber Blue. It had every option except the glass roof. With 662 horsepower it was insane! I still didn't have a connection with it though. It was so refined that it was boring. It was almost like driving a Cadillac. I have found that I prefer simpler, more basic cars. I don't want the bells and whistles. I don't want NAV and any kind of electronic connectivity. And don't even get me started on the automatic transmissions. Sequential, dual clutch, regular automatic, CVT, it doesn't matter. You lack the physical connection between man and machine when you take away that manual shifter. It just makes you feel one with the car. Keep the videos coming. The 308 is basically the car you think of when someone mentions Ferrari. They weren't the fastest cars out there. The Lamborghini Jalpa, Porsche 944 Turbo/911 Turbo, and even the Corvette were faster in its class but that 308 was maybe more of an icon than the others. Now if you ever get to feature a 288 GTO I will really be envious.

Great car in a great colour and nice to see it still on the 14" wheels. I'm sure you know the V8 wasn't new with the GTB as Ferari had already been building it for 2 years for the gt4. I never found the fiberglass cars noisier than the later ones, but then engine note does tend to overpower everything else, and why not! For the plastic cars I'd just add that if you're looking to buy one it's even more important than for the later variants to get it professionally inspected. That shiny glassfiber is still covering a steel frame and there can be some total nightmares going one underneath. I've seen A-pillars that looked perfect from the outside but were pretty much held togather only by the windscreen! Nice to see the backwards-running clock at 1:27 has sorted itself out at 6:25.

In refence to the clock, thats due to the way the shot was taken. I couldnt imagine a clock magically changing its direction. Although if one exists i need it. Give me a reason to be late all the time 😆

Yes we use a track slider to take some of our shots, the clip must have been used backwards, i can promise you the clock on this car does not magically change direction.

Ferraris are rarely modified (at least not to the extent Porsche 911s have been for decades). I would love to build a 308 or 328 GTB with Longitudinal V8 ZF transaxle and some turbos (ala F40 evo) . That engine transmission layout would have made the Boxer and Testarossa potentially successful race cars. I understand that was not the goal for Ferrari however its something I often wonder about, what might have been. I love Ferrari especially the 50s and 60s competition cars and have had the opportunity to ride in a 512 Boxer, 246 Dino, 275 GTB 2 cam, 250 TDF and drive a 308 GT4 a number of times but the post 1960s road cars that seemed amazing to me as a kid are now objects I no longer desire.

Everytime you change gears your eyes go to the stick and gate. That is understandable especially if you have a dogleg gearbox and if you are new to a car but ultimately it is a shortcoming in your driving. Your eyes should be totally committed to observations and your trajectory as far ahead as your eyes can reach along your driving line.

Not true at all. I have had my 328 for 2 years and I hardly ever look down at the shifter. It completely becomes second nature. And the thing that you’re saying is a detriment to the car is in reality one of the things that people buy these cars for. A manual gated Ferrari? It’s the dream.

you know theirs something someone always forgets with these old things, each example is going to be different, some will have more power, some will have less, some will be great to have, others you wanna Miami Vice it with a rocket launcher, like they did with his daytona, which is why I think the 308 was always kind of dumped on abit given when things from the 80's get old, they can be a real nightmare to put right, plus they were improved latter on. like the QV cars were better than the earlier ones, and the fiberglass ones are actually kind of the worst of the bunch for driving, despite being the most expensive, as people think its like really really fast and quick when it was just a mid 70's sports car, granted it had 215 HP when a corvette had 165, and a mustang 2 was about 115 and weighted about 800 pounds less than the also fiberglass vette as well, the engine, all iron, and a steel frame vs tube chasis, that is gonna make a difference there and its kind of nice to know that people are improving upon these things and they are becoming proper enthuasts cars, like theirs engine swaps going on, people are deleting the distrubutor so it doesnt have points to deal with anymore, and you can just get in and drive like the car wizard is doing, the suspensions getting overhauled, people are figuring out how to remove the 150 pounds of excess weight the american bumpers put on and all without the ahole I'm rich bitch price tags that people like Currated are sticking to the formerly great company of lamborghini's golden age cars now. like the ferrari 308's kinda became the car of the people in a way, and owners love them as their not so fast that they get you into serious trouble like the latter ones do, although still, yeah that distributor delete is a good starting upgrade to do on day one lol like make no bones about it, its still gonna be a pain to live with if it hasnt been sorted first like all cars of the era lol and hence why people are kinda looking at the 328's and the 348's now, generally their easier to sort as you get out of the oh my god why wont it work era into the modern one where things just DO work as long as you look after them, although the 348 was too much for that engine to be enlarged to. so the 328 is still generally the better one to go to, I just hope someone makes a kit to put a 308 bumper on it soon.

Not that this is helpful to either of ya, there’s a blue Mondial 8 for sale in Christchurch, New Zealand… and it’s ex-USA model, so presumably most people here in NZ won’t buy it because we drive on the left side of the road not the right. (I unfortunately can only afford buying Ferrari shares lol, not even a 2nd/3rd hand model)! Anyway it’s a bit like an exotic animal which is thousands of miles away it’s natural habitat and needs to be relocated haha. US cars: - Heavy ugly bumpers - Ugly square side indicators - Air pump - No dry sump - Super heavy exhaust - No dry sump (only European carbureted GTBs have this) - Down on power (different camshafts?) - Longer gearing? - Dual distributor - Much heavier This is not what a 308 was born to be. The US made sure you should by a Corvette rather than a Ferrari with all the above (I still think the Ferrari was the better 😲) Stay away from these if you can and get a European GTB.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime./()/()/()()

Love the tall gears of the 4 speed in the 79 but having that 5 speed getrag gearbox was a bonus. 86 only I the turbos I believe and in 87 standard getrag 5 spd. Anyway dig your videos. You have forgot the most important things about this cars, on euro models only, Ferrari offered a "Sprint Package" that was a very expensive Package in the 70s, 3000US Sprint pack» including P6 cams,, Borgo HC pistons, , four exhaust pipes,- 16" Speedline wheels fitted with Pirelli P7. also the suspension was modified to cope with the 16 wheels and added performance. Because the upgrade was so expensive it was only 4 cars in 1978 and 6 cars in 1979 that came whit the Sprint pack,(have no numbers for other early years? if i remember correctly it was about 300HP(224kw) it was a substantial increase of power from euro spek non sprint pack 255hp a orginal "sprint pack" 300hp 308 will not be cheap today and will probably go crasy in a couple of years.

One reason these cars were so treasured in the '70s is because the personal luxury cars of that era would completely isolate you from the driving experience. Power everything, velvet seats and an interior that looked more like a living room than a car. Not so with these sportscars of the era.
