With my vine plants i just cut to have one node cuttings and put them back in the original pot with the “mother plant”, it might take longer than in water, but it sprouts not all of them, but enough. I bought perlite this week (for something else) but will take your advice and start doing my propagation in it, the sphagnumoss like you said clings to the roots, had trouble with it and thin roots (the moss won 😢).
@EverythingPlants18 күн бұрын
Ya....moss can be difficult even though it roots so well. Thanks for watching my videos Patricia!

Can it not be planted into soil even if there’s still sphagnum moss on the roots?

With vining plants, such as pothots and cordatum/hederaceum philodendron, I always make 1-node cuttings, maybe 2 nodes if they're close together. I find there's a higher risk of failure (root rot, tip dehydration) if the length of the vine in propagation is longer than 3 nodes, whether it's in water or a prop box. I believe it's because the longer the vine, the more difficult it is for the plant to support the already present leaves while simultaneously pushing new roots The exception would be plants that root all along the stem, like Hoya curtisii. For those, I take "long" cuttings of about 5 inches and press them tightly against the perlite or sphagnum in a prop box. I also sprinkle a tiny bit of moss or perlite on top of the cuttings to increase contact with the substrate.

@ I’ve done everything but I think I’m with you 100%. Water, perlite, air-layering and even stratum but sphagnum moss is frustrating. I’ve had excellent success with PON with my Hoyas.

I like the way you think. I buy pots and dog water bowls at Dollar Tree, and I look through the kitchen stuff for large plastic bowls and aluminum bowls for $1.25. I drill holes in the bottom and pot my plants in those, then set them into pretty ceramic pots. I never put plants directly into ceramics anymore. Love the clear plastic cups they have to start plants. I browse the isles; I've repurposed several items to fit my plant's needs. Can't beat the price, and the plant will outgrow it in a year.

I'm also found a new method, and by accident. I received a new plant, and unfortunately it didn't acclimate well. So after a few weeks I put it in a propagation box and probably forgot it. When I went back I found that each node, that did not have a leaf, now had an aerial root because of the very high humidity. The roots themselves were about an inch long, so I proceeded to chop them up like I normally would for water propagation and instead I put them in moss, which I generally don't like for the same reasons you don't. And it worked well, like really well. So now I'm trying with any of my plants that have a lengthy no leaf section, to put it in the high humidity prop box. I'm in the desert in Washington and my humidity is around 40 45% or less. And I don't supplement, because I'm lazy. I'm going to try this on a pathos next because I've got quite a few that are lengthy that I neglected and don't have any leaves. We'll see. Thanks for the video,... Great is always.

"I don't even know what this it"....something I say to my myself every time I open a prop box. I'm horrible about keeping track what I throw in the boxes. I also hate using moss for the same reason as you, but I recently tried it again and I'm having much better success if I let the moss dry out over night. Otherwise, it rots my plants. Thanks for the pot extender idea....gonna try that on my pathetic zebra plant:)

Hi Jeff, have you done a video on after your propagations have grown roots how successful you are when you plant them I always run into the problem how long to grow the roots before planting and once I plant it’s hit and miss if they survive how wet do you typically keep your mix when first planted and I’ve heard not to use terra cotta for fresh props I am quite experienced in the plant hobby I have almost 200 of them, but I always find it’s tricky when you move your propagations into aroid mix thanks
