Great thorough job! When I did the original 5150, I used a slower taper potentiometer, which really did nothing till about 6. When I came to work at EVH, I found they’d changed to a different taper that comes up faster and is spread more across the whole knob. So yes, you tend to get similar presence by keeping it under 5 compared to the block letter. It’s just more things Ed wanted differently over time. And on the noise gate, the guitar is picking up the amp’s transformer since you’re sitting close to the power transformer side of the amp. If you were on the other side, you’d have much better results. Also the preamp out jack is straight with no simulation, and is at the same location as the XLR….so you can use that with your own high end IR’s.

Oh thanks so much Mr. Brown! In my books you and Jim Marshall are the fathers of loud so it’s amazing that you’ve checked out my video and also wrote here. This is so cool! Thank you also for the info and tips! Really cool! It’d be an honour to chat with you someday if you’d be up for it. My email is: evalovirta@gmail.com. Just in case 😊. Long live King Ed 🙏🎼.

The greatest thing about EVH, besides his playing, was that he wanted the average player to have access to phenomenal sounds. WVH has kept up with that. Mark Tremonti has as well. Both sound great, the Iconic has more features that make it awesome for more budget minded folk.

@@TruthSurge hey hey!!! Love your cover of Rainbow in the Dark. Much better than Co&*( T@$%^'s go at it. Although, Liliac gives you a hard run for the money. The 5150 from Peavey was around $600 way back in the early 90s. It took him quite some time to find a manufacturer who would take the chance on such a monumental task as working with EVH, and keep it affordable. Most that he approached wanted to cash in on his name and make em expensive AF, Peavey IIRC really needed someone and something, and a match made in heaven happened. Have to give them and PRS for taking on these challenges and bringing us some phenominal gear for a huge bang for the buck.

@@tobins6800 Well, I am not up on it as much as you are but I did know that Peavey made a lot of amps back in the 80s and I even owned one. Renown. Two 12 combo amp. solid state. It was okay. Lots of people used Peavey amps. Yeah that family band does really well with the girl singer. I saw a vid a few years back. You have a nice Eddie VH sound with those 5150 amps and that frankenstrat. But it's a good sound for anything besides a VH song. Thanks on my singing. I just do it as a hobby. Nice to see you reply!!! Yeah, I think $600 is a really fair price for a good amp head in the 90s. I also think Peavey was a lower priced brand in general but not sure. Anyway, nice playing, too!!!

A little late to the party here but the Iconic received alot of unwarranted hate when it came out. Even folks that never used it already hated it. In using an original 5150 vs 6105 vs Iconic I found I could make the Iconic mimic both the 6105 and 5150 almost identically but I couldn't get the 5150 or 6105 to mimic the Iconic. In being more of a Mesa fan I was surprised at how forward and how much low end grunt the Iconic has. It is very versatile. Old school or Modern, it can do both very well. Definitely a keeper.

I agree 100%....drives me crazy how many people bash iconic amps in the comments of reddit etc because they think it's the cool thing to do and most of them never even played one. I was just reading a guy who was excited to get an iconic combo but then some random guy in comments started bashing it and convinced the guy that he would hate it and talked him into buying another amp which he ended up hating and returning. It is just annoying because you could tell the guy doing the bashing was just going by what he assumed by reading the specs and the price without even playing one.

The other has the original preamp tubes and JJ 6L6's. Under the same dialed in settings they both sound KILLER! The one with the JJ's is just a tad dryer but I like that. Both amps very consistent. I run a Fortin Hexdrive in front. Once you can get these amps dialed in with a good OD, there isn't much out there that can beat them. Rock On Euge!

Hey Euge, You covered everything great I thought about these amps. But I have a theory about the 80 watts. Type amp. You take your run of the mill el-34 or 6L6 your looking at 18 to 20 watts output per tube. So a Quad gives you your 80 watts. A 100 watt amp or higher you now need tubes producing more power. And the rule seems to be in life, the more faster, louder, higher, more better period costs a hell of a lot more. I have a Randall thrasher 50, it will run on el-34’s or 6L6’s or KT88’s I tried them all 6L6GC’s you name it. And what sounds the best ? The biggest ,baddest , most expensive tube my amp can run . The KT88 I just bought two Mesa branded KT88’s for a little bit over $200.00 dollars. That’s insane, but so is the Tone. Isn’t that how tone junkies are supposed to act? God Bless Bro,

I can see why people prefer the OG; right up to the point where you have 6, count ‘em SIX, preamp tubes that will eventually need replacement. Have you seen what tubes are going for these days?! I’ll stick with the Iconic, thank you.
@EugeValovirta230V Жыл бұрын
Preamp tubes aren’t that expensive and they last usually years and since OG is cold biased the power amp tubes last long too. I just replaced all and the last time was probably like 10 years ago 😎👌.

Killer review/demo Euge! I find, for under 1,000 USD, the Iconic is a bargain! You get decent clean, a great "brown sound" in the channel 1 w/ OD, serious high gain on Channel 2, a noise gate, and the boost. Add 4 6L6's, and the 1/4 power attenuator, and it's a killer amp. Also, it's a new amp. The 30 year old Peavy 5150's will need new caps, and whatever maintenance - IF you can find one in decent shape. And the brown "iconic" VH tones are in the Iconic, not the 5150 block, or even III amps.

The only issues I have are: it's a hybrid, and it's made in Chyna. No idea how it's built because nobody has done photos or video of the inside of it yet. Might be a lot of really cheap parts inside.

Its a great amp ! but most of the video's, and demo's Ive seen, the mid's are the only problem where you have to use a eq pedal !
@Bridging_the_Political_Divide Жыл бұрын
The big difference would certainly be durability long term. Seeing those tiny transformers in the Iconic, and the price point, guarantee it's full of inexpensive, high tolerance parts. Egnater learned the hard way about small, inexpensive, foreign transformers. One amp here will last, one wont. Mil Spec Soldanos and Bogners are expensive for a reason.

When keyboard warriors bash evh iconic amps saying they can't get one decent tone out of them, I usually direct them to this and one other video and give them a sendoff that generally gets me kicked off the forum etc

The Iconic has its mids focused at a lower frequency, however the character of the amp is basically the same. The question is, in a full mix, would you be able to listen to it and go: "Ahhh, that one's definitely a 5150 Iconic and not a blockletter?"
