I have what I feel like is a great mod that I haven’t seen anyone else do. It’s on a widely neglected part of a virtual pinball build compared to how a real pinball is. On real pinball machines the (real) lights and flashers light up the sides of the playfield or the inner walls of the cabinet. Virtual pinball doesn’t provide this effect. It sort of does but lacks the popping lights and colors. Most people I see just add a decal. Some time ago I got to messing around with a Lytmi Fantasy LED that is designed to go around the back of your TV. It doesn’t use a camera like to govee ones do yet uses an hdmi box that plugs in between your pc and the playfield screen. Install plexiglass to basically line the sides of your cab on the left and right of your virtual playfield screen. The plexiglass should be mostly lining the left and right walls inside your cab and go up to the top of your glass yet, the width should be determined by about 2” below your playfield. I hope this makes sense. Cap off the top of the plexiglass so light doesn’t emit out the top. Slightly scuff the plexi surface of the plexiglass to a fine frosted haze . Make sure the bottom of the glass that should be under your playfield is clean and not scuffed. Install your leds where they shine upwards in the direction of your playfield glass or UP. Now, when your virtual playfield has a light effect, the led positioned near that side where the light went off will also light up, and with the same color of lighting and now it acts like the lighting effects in your virtual playfield is what is causing the lighting effects on the sides!. I’m telling you I’m proud of this idea and I haven’t seen anyone do it. But wow! It really adds another layer to the realism of the virtual build!

Wow Dave, what a cool idea! I see it on Amazon... so what is actually triggering the lights? On the 2 LED light bars I'm using now, they react to the sound coming out of the speakers (which works surprisingly well). BUT they have to be recharged after a couple of hours of use. If you have any pics or video, could you send it to me? evilgeniusemail@gmail
@daveeagle2721
@daveeagle2721 Ай бұрын
@ well the led strip is designed to send an extended hue of color the the sides of an lcd tv and the strips are originally intended to be installed behind the screen. Look up lytmi fantasy 3 led lights. Im not sure how the led is triggered but i think it comes from inside the box which your lcd hdmi plug goes. Then out the other ene of the box it outputs to the tv. If installed correctly, like I was saying they give you an additional light show on the sides of the inside of the cab that matches everything going on in the playfield. It’s truly cool. The strip doesnt know you are using it this way in other words.
@daveeagle2721
@daveeagle2721 Ай бұрын
@ i can tell you its not the sound that is triggering it but just the graphical data going through the box. Another thing I should note the leds have to be positioned to light up the plexiglass. The frosted haze of the glass helps the blur and disperse the light and it then looks like the playfield is what is lighting up the sidewalls. I will try to get picks but it may be a bit since my build is all tore apart to paint! :(

Really practical ideas. I love them. Just wishful thinking right now of something cool for the metal apron. I know it can’t be done but wouldn’t it be cool if you cut rectangles into each side and put lcd screens in them and they brought up those cards for every game you selected? I think that would be awesome.
@evilgeniusentertainment

I think that's a sweet idea. I suppose you could clone the main playfield then maybe (somehow) zoom into the playcard part of the apron?

There is a guy on one of the fb groups that devised a way together a dmd working on fx3 by using some hardware that would zoom in on the on playfield dmd. He then was able to place that image in place on the dmd he installed. So I would theorize that getting the play cards could be done the same way

You just lay it down on the playfield! Now you could put little felt feet on it the bottom of the apron, or screw it directly to the cab itself (which make taking the screen out impossible), but I just set it straight on the monitor.

I just put a little black gorrila tape on the bottom edge. No scratches so far! Remember that the apron doesn't move at all (unless you're really blasting your cab). You could also put little felt feet on the corners (which I though about doing, but the tape seems to be working well enough).

So the apron is going to be the same for every table and cover up any aprons with rom lights. Na, your losing all of that art work specific to every table.

@@evilgeniusentertainment Well for some tables like my Firepower Vs A.I. it's very necessary to see what state the game is in at any given time. And the Flintstones table's apron is part of the ball path that deposits it to either flipper that you definitely need to see. And yea of course, you are covering the instruction cards to EVERY game including original games. We put a ton of work into those aprons;) It would be like me putting a bra over the Mona Lisa... Wow it's like 3d dude, lol.
