In the first game of a melee match, 5 stages are available (Yoshi's Story, Battlefield, Dreamland 64, Fountain of Dreams, and Final Destination) In order to choose the stage they will play on, each player "strikes" two of the stages, and the final stage remaining is the one they play on. In this case, they RPSed to decide who would strike first (striking second is generally considered an advantage)

melee is actually considered the more competitive game amongst the community and its creators. there are more mechanics that lend itself to tournament play over brawl.

It shouldn't be about whether the game is new or not, it should be just about how much support the community gives to its game. Both Brawl and Melee have fairly solid communities though, Melee just rallied behind the EVO donation drive in a frenzy though.

I mean, EVO DID take place in the USA, so obviously there are going to be people chanting "USA." See, here in the US, it's natural for people to root for their home team/competitor/etc when there is competition. We do so to add to the competitive atmosphere. To add "hype" if you will. Outside competition, we give our opponent our full respect for putting in effort and trying their best. Wavedashing and L-cancelling are not glithces, L-cancelling was in the instruction manual in Smash 64, and Sakurai has stated that they were aware of wavedashing during Melee's development and intentionally left it in.

No, what he means is wavedashing IS the animation. Air dodging into the ground needed to have SOMEthing programmed or the game would break. The programmers set it so that air dodging into the ground causes you to enter what is coded as your LandFallSpecial animation and would transfer the remaining momentum from the air dodge into horizontal movement. This action is what we call wavedashing. 100% intentionally programmed, they just didn't realize what an incredible movement option it was.

Let's demystify this. LCD's can only physically display one resolution. If you feed a signal with a different resolution into the TV, the little computer inside the TV has to run a fairly intensive on-the-fly scaling process. Cheap HDTV's have crappy processors in them, so they will lag. Not just for Gamecube, but for any non HD signal-- including every Wii game. Nicer TV's usually don't have this problem, but people don't usually want to bring nice things to tournaments. For good reason.

Most people nowadays hit up their local communities to find people who are playing. Smashboards is a great place to start, but I've noticed a rising trend towards facebook groups for most local communities. For example, I'm part of the socal melee FB community now, which lets me keep in contact with a lot of other socal smashers.

Except wavedashing isn't a glitch. The programmers & game designers purposely implemented an animation where your character air dodges into the floor...they just had no idea the competitive viability it had. Wavedashing is a physics mechanic, pure and simple.

Yeah, no matter what there will be *some* delay. The question is whether or not it's enough that the players will notice. Sometimes this can be divisive-- especially between the veterans who feel it plain as day, and the less experienced who wonder what all the fuss is about. The best solution is usually just to use CRT's. Then there can be no doubt. Wouldn't it be nice if Nintendo remade Melee in HD and put it on virtual console? Maybe that's too much to hope for... :\

Even the best HDTV's have lag- it's better on decent ones but still not perfect. It sounds like splitting hairs, I know, but melee is so ridiculously fast and precise that even the slightest processing time makes it feel wrong.
