I take a look at the evolution of Huey, Dewey and Louie, the rascally nephews of Donald Duck and three of Disney’s most beloved characters ever, right from their first appearance in Al Taliaferro and Carl Barks’ Silly Symphonies / Donald Duck comic strips in 1937, right through to their modern looks.

An interesting note about the three nephews: sometimes in their comic appearances, the artist would accidentally draw a fourth nephew (it's easy to imagine doing so, since the three were visually identical at that time). That nephew has been named "Phooey".

My favorite incarnation of the triplets is probably the current Ducktales series because it makes them the most distinct to the point that episodes only need to feature two or even just one of them to get a full experience. Though I'll admit Louie's my favorite because he's, well, green.

Personally, I like the 2017 reboot the most due to their unique personalities and the overarching plot thrown in. Plus I like the style of the animation (although I know that many people don't). Also, Louie in the reboot is my favorite for many reasons. One, I can relate to him and his laziness (and he wears a hoodie, which I own many of). There's also the fact that he is the most sensitive of the three. Although usually, he is shown to be uncaring or rude in the reboot, but when an emotional moment for the three hits, Louie is the one who takes it the hardest.

At first I was a bit put off the reboot due to it's animation style which I didn't like (I was a fan of the original series growing up). Fortunately I was able to put that first impression behind, and ended up seeing the entire thing. It was a fantastic reboot, with a huge attention to detail, good reimagining of many beloved characters while staying pretty faithful to their chore and it was a real love-letter to the old Disney cartoons and comics. I'm genuinely sad it wasn't going to be continued after the third season and that it already ended.

@@akazienoel2009I agree. I mean in 87 ducktales series they did show Huey being the leader a lot, Dewey being the one that comes up with plans being clever, and Louie the most sweetest. But quack pack expanded on that with having Louie bee the one into sports the most, Dewey being a genius, and Huey being a slacker ladies man. I never understood the hate for quack pack I grew up with it and love it. Yes ducktales was a better shoe but quack pack was good and expanded the universe of Donald and his nephews.

I never got their age changing over the years. In most they were depicted as 10 years old. In the short Lucky Number they were depicted as teenagers. (Why else were they able to drive a hot rod?) In the original Ducktales they said they were 10. In Quack Pack they were depicted as 14 or 15. In The House of Mouse they were young adults. By the time 2019 came around the boys are now kids again.

Reboot versions are the best, not only do they have distinct personalities but they're treated much more as individual characters with their own relationships with other characters. Like how Dewey seems to be closer to Launchpad and Webby than Huey and Louie are, or how Louie just doesn't come on the adventures sometimes. That show is unreasonably good.

Agree. Unfortunately, I see it unlikely that we will have an animation evolution video dedicated to the richest duck in the world. The thing is, besides DuckTales (and its reboot), Scrooge has never been an animated character, but a comic book character. A Scrogee video would include 3 or 4 appearances and call it a day befire the 5-minute mark. I guess that's why there's no Scrooge video... yet.

Scrooge has actually appeared a few times. He was seen (albeit for about 0.0002 seconds) in the Mickey Mouse Club intro, had his own short Scrooge McDuck and Money, guest-starred alongside HDL and Goofy in Sport Goofy in Soccermania, and has also appeared in an Italian production or two, particularly one opening sequence by comic legend Romano Scarpa. Not to mention the current Paul Rudish shorts as well. Scrooge might not have *as* much of an animation history as some of the others, but there's plenty more than just DuckTales and personally, I can't wait to see a Scrooge video someday~

The hate for that show really munches...Quack Pack was mad fun. Problem is, everybody at the time believed it to be a poorly executed follow-up to the legendary 1987 series "DuckTales", which is a widespread myth. It's not, and I'm astounded Disney+ messed up on their description of the show by labeling it as such. It's true that "Quack Pack" was intended as a sequel, but to the original Donald Duck shorts that came out prior to "DuckTales" creation. It's a universe where Donald was honorably discharged by the Navy, bought a house and settled down with his nephews. This means the triplets never met their Uncle Scrooge, traveled the world and took in the various cultures and went on exciting adventures. The triplets in Quack Pack instead grew up living with their Uncle Donald, where they heckled him on a daily basis while experiencing the exciting culture of 90's teen suburban living...Which was mostly TV, video games, movies, the mall, comic books, popular culture, music, and girls. When you think about it in that way (as how the show was initially conceived), it makes more sense in that regard. It wasn't A-grade material for sure, but I enjoyed it enough, and this is coming from a fan of the OG 1987 DuckTales. You have to understand, at the time when "Quack Pack" went on air in 1996 it was nice to see the triplets finally break out of their perpetual childhood and be allowed to grow into their teen years, which was an idea that thankfully carried over into 2001's "House of Mouse" where the three as young adults became the house band (jumping from band name to band name; Depending on the episode, often performing as "The Quackstreet Boys" or "Kid Duck").

Okay, this may be an unpopular opinion but here goes... I liked the Quack Pack cartoon. There, flame me or not, I said it. The designs and personality of the triplets were marks of the times in the 90s. It was the 1st time they stood out as individuals and showcased their differences instead of being copies of each other. It's also not that far of a jump to say that show was the precursor to the 2017 reboot where the 3 vary in design and personality again. The nostalgia in me also loves the original Ducktales version from Disney Afternoon block. I'd also say the reboot is tied with the original.

Huey, Dewey and Louie were always awesome. My favorite version though is the current Ducktales version, both in designs and character. In fact, they are so well developed that I can't even pick one favorite. I used to say Dewey because my favorite color is blue, but now they are all favorites. Huey with his intelligence and thirst for knowledge is closest to who I am personally; Dewey and his sense of adventure is what I'd love to be, just seeking out awesome places to explore; and Louie's greed, risk-taking and entrepreneurship is what I should have in order to fulfill my life goals; so they all have characteristics I identify with in some shape or form. As I said, impossible to pick a favorite.

And Louie was the silly one. Quack pack just further dived into it and the reboot. But the 87 series they had distinctive personalities too. Now the classic shots that’s another story they were all alike in those lol.

It's definitely is the 2017 reboot for me. They are interesting, relatable and look good. I love how their distinguished personalities allows the show to explore their individual relationship to one another and other characters. I hope that possible future adaptations will take inspiration from the 2017 version. Putting them back in the old mold would be a huge step back in my opinion.

it's interesting that the characters got different names in Germany. Here are some examples: Pete=Kater Karlo Scrooge McDuck= Dagobert Duck Huey, Dewey and Louie=Tick,Trick and Track

The same happens in Spain. Scrooge McDuck = Gil Pato, his nephews call him Tio Gilito. Huey, Dewey and Louie = Juanito, Jorgito y Jaimito. Gladstone Gander = Narciso Bello, it's funny because it means 'beautiful daffodil'. Webby = Rosita, it means 'little rose'. Duckworth = Bautista. Launch McQuack = Joe McQuack. The Beagle Boys = Los Golfos Apandadores, it would mean the 'Thieving Urchins'. Curiously Mrs. Beakley keeps her name.

Ahh yes Huey, Dewey and Louie or as we call them in Dutch Kwik, Kwek and Kwak cause they're you know ducks. Itallians have a similar naming I believe. Also in in Italy they still produce stories for duckpockets and in our country we still have the magazine running weekly. With all the characters even making cameos in our own country. And before the reboot of ducktales Della was brought back in the magazines first. Also Scrooge is called Dagobert which I find a nicer name since it doen't only imply greed. When I was a kid and watched the original DuckTales, Dewey was my favorite because he was blue; back then I saw them as the same character, without any distinct personality. But now, with the new DuckTales, I can easily say that Louie is my favorite, also I really like this new cartoon, and this iteration of the boys. I have to say that I loved that in house of mouse the boys would change of style with the music the were playing.

I've grown up with old Disney yet I never got attached to any of those individual cartoons because they lacked lore and personality. Sure, they were super charming and great for that time, but today we strive for more realistic approaches to people's personalities, character growth and a continuous timeline. Out of all of these, the Ducktales reboot truly clicked with me personally, I haven't enjoyed or loved a series this much in a long time. They pulled off the trio's personalities perfectly, making them pretty unique in their own way, with distinct characteristics and realistic behavioral traits that perfectly reflect the world around them and their personal experiences. The producers did a fantastic job and I am most certainly hooked. I do have to admit that I truly love all three of them since they're now distinct people but I cannot resist Louie, he's incredibly relatable, especially when it comes to the lack of motivation, laziness, love for material possessions and most importantly, psychological traits and lack of confidence. Many today's fans have headcanons that each one of them has a type of autism which would truly be incredible and great representation in media, something I believe as well. However, if I had to choose my favourite character, it would be Lena. There's something about a fierce and mysterious rebel teen who has a soft spot for a cute, adventurous girl that truly makes me weak. I do love Webby as well, she's got SO MUCH personality in the reboot and she absolutely deserved that.

R.I.P. Russi Taylor, I love all the duck characters and grew up with them, Duck Tales was one of the best shows ever. The later series after 2013 - that animation is just wrong. So Duck Tales and all the Classic Carl Barks comics of the 1940 - 1965 era.

Gotta love the Reboot versions! Not only are the designs really pleasing to look at, they’re the most fleshed out the characters have ever been on an individual basis. On that note, while I’m certain the theory you gave on their personalities reflecting Scrooge is true in part, I myself heard that their personalities were formed on the basis of what traits first, middle, and last children usually display. Huey is the oldest so he feels the most responsible, Louie is the youngest so he can act kind of spoiled and greedy, and Dewey is in the middle so he’s not sure quite where he fits and just kinda goes wild.

I still prefer the OG DuckTales version of the triplets. Russi Taylor gave them this mischievous, wide-eyed sensibility... and it helped bring a layer of childlike wonder to their adventures with Uncle Scrooge. The '17 iteration makes them feel a bit more jaded, and I think that sucks a bit of the fun out of things. Still, the '17 iteration has a bigger focus on story and bringing in characters from the comics we didn't see in the OG series. Both versions have their pros and cons... but I'll still prefer the triplets in the OG DuckTales. Plus, Alan Young is still the best Scrooge. David's fine, but sometimes I feel he's an octave too high in some scenes. Alan was pitch perfect. Plus, the OG series had such vivid colors and great segments of animation. Aside from a few sequences of nice facial animation, I haven't seen the '17 iteration match some of the set-piece animation from the 5-part pilot of the OG series or the minecart sequence in "Earthquack."

True, Carl Barks has done them the best, but there is no need to dispute the Italian comic artists who made them the best in comics. Yes, Louie Duck in the reboot is not bad (I do not mind he is greedy and partly interesting to me because of his jokes), although his behavior irritates me in some episodes and the creators made him an asshole. Louie is better in original Ducktales and Quack Pack, who does not behave terribly in those series.

One thing I loved about the 2017 reboot was Donald's relationship with his boys, instead of being the annoyed and strict uncle like in past media, he actually shows love and care to the triplets, he takes responsibility of watching over them despite his luck, all while still maintaining his overbearing nature, they basically take that hint of the loving parent vibe Donald had in the original show and expanded on it in the reboot. Funny how in the original, Donald was written out of the story presumably out of the creators' fear that he might steal the spotlight away from the rest of the family, while in the reboot, he more like the "underrated star".

You are partly right. They deliberately made the triplets identical, to focus more on Donald and Scrooge. Unfortunately, Ducktales 2017 did the wrong thing and focused more on them than on Donald and Scrooge. I don't mind if they have separate personalities, but there is no need to destroy their commonality, which is their main characteristic. Quack Pack did better, though I prefer the classic versions from the comics and the OG Ducktales.

Alvin and the Chipmunks debuted in 1958. Huey, Dewey and Louie's modern colours are inspired by their first appearance in 1937. So, if anything, it's the other way around.

Even so, the personalities assigned to each colour are very similar. Red is the fearless leader, blue is the smart one, and green is the most friendly. I dunno when the Chipmunks cartoon started though so I'm not sure who's really ripping off who there.

Red is often associated with bravery, perhaps because of its association with blood, battlefield, soldiers etc , green is associated with nature; grass and trees and natural beauty (and now recycling). Blue is associated with intelligence. It is also associated with authority and trust. It is why many social media outlets use the colour blue [Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter etc]. Perhaps it has this association because blue is a hard colour to find in nature and thus historically a hard colour to recreate in clothing (like purple, for example, another regal colour because of it's rarity). This is where the colour "Royal blue" gets its name, and also "Blue Blood" to refer to royalty. It is /probably/ associated with intelligence because for a very long time, only those with money could afford educations... and the colour blue. The colour uses were likely done to give personality the audience can read into more on a subliminal level, both Ducktales and The Chipmunks, and not to copy each other
