Little fun fact: Taz-Mania was the reason why Crash Bandicoot wasn't named "Willie the Wombat", because the show included a character of the same name. So, to avoid confusion with an already existing cartoon character, Naughty Dog first decided to come up with different names for the same species (either Wes, Wezzy or Wuzzle the Wombat) and then with a made-up animal (Ozzy the Ottsel, which later became Daxter's species in the Jak & Daxter series). But in the end, they came up with a bandicoot (another lesser known Australian animal), who liked to literally "crash" into the wooden crates lying around the stages.
@jsb77783 жыл бұрын
Fun fact (that I'm surprised wasn't mentioned): Taz's iconic spinning animation & sound was based off of the Weasel from a few Foghorn Leghorn shorts, another McKimson-made character.

I recall there being a videogame where you played as Taz and had to wreck Marvin's plans. The game itself was eh, but I really like that concept. I'd love to see that concept realized. Maybe some Martian bureaucrat forces Marvin to Noah's ark a breeding pair of every animal on Earth if he wants to blow it up as a starting concept. Then a few Alien spoofs where an extra terrestrial is dealing with an earthling in a horror movie type set up. Sounds like a lot of fun.

They're the first two Looney Tunes reps to be in Multiversus after Bugs (With Taz having recently joined the roster and Marvin being leaked as a fighter) if that tells you anything about their popularity.

Taz and Marvin are my Dad's favourites. When he started talking about them, it prompted me to start looking more into the characters. I was aware of Taz a bit, but knew nothing about Marvin. After searching for some classic appearances and watching a couple of films, I'm now ashamed that I didn't know enough about these guys. Out of the two, Marvin is probably my favourite.

I love how Taz somehow he never truly loses in the end of his classic shorts. He's just a beast who either eats all he wants or finds love. He never cops it as bad as Fudd or Sam. Funny enough, if you look up actual Tasmanian Devils & the history of rabbits in Australia, you'll find that the roles are reversed! It's the bunnys that are rampaging & causing all sorts of destruction (creating sinkholes & destroying the top soil), while Tassie devils are shy creatures that mind their own business. Although they still have the same table manners as Taz.

He actually loses in almost all his classic shorts (except the first one). Devil May Hare: Neutral ending Bedevilled Rabbit: He loses Ducking the Devil: He loses (one of the rare times Daffy wins in the end) Bill of Hare: He loses Dr. Devil and Mr. Hare: Both he and Bugs lose in the end

@joshI Also note Rabbits or even Hares/Jackrabbits were never native to Australia until they got introduced.
@i.m.evilhomer50843 жыл бұрын
@@caseysmith544 Yes, I know. I am bonafide Aussie. The destruction caused by invasive species like rabbits is taught in schools. Native predators like Tassie devils, quolls, birds of prey, goannas & dingoes are actually do control some of invasive species. So rabbits do end up on Taz's menu.

Who knew that Robert McKimson came up with the Tasmanian Devil through a Crossword puzzle when trying to create a new recurring antagonist and an animal that WB hadn't utilized in their shorts and even if McKimson didn't saw what the animal looked like and made the design of Taz as a caricature creature we always associate the animal to the Looney Tunes character. Taz just like Marvin the Martian really had an interesting history, and as you said it yourself in the video, despite appearing in 5 shorts it was the late 1980's and especially the 1990's that help made him popular again thus making him a part of the Looney Tunes roster. On top of that, his popularity help made the Tasmanian Devil animal more well-known to everyone living outside of Australia and raised awareness on saving the animal from becoming extinct.🌪🌪 Thanks for the documentary Dave and looking forward to Taz's voice evolution, regarding my favorite iteration I enjoyed the classic shorts released during the 1950's and his appearances during the 1990's (e.g. Taz-Mania, Space Jam, etc..).
@thespider-boy94973 жыл бұрын
You are right ! Taz was soo popular in the 90's . Now ? Not so much unfortunately
@mightyfilm3 жыл бұрын
Taz-Mania was the character at his best. Giving him a child-like depth and giving him more roles than just the predator, often times being the fall guy. I'm a big fan of the genre bending LT shows, with Duck Dodgers and Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries rounding the three series out. Honestly, I can't even choose a favorite between the three. I always loved the fact he was in so few of the original shorts but had such a popularity push in the 80's and 90's. Even had an Atari 2600 game all the way back in 1982 or so, so you know that popularity was a long time coming. Oh, and fun fact. Jim Cummings actually played a Tasmania Devil for Disney before he was cast as WB's Taz. It was briefly in the Rescue Rangers episode, "A Wolf in Cheap Clothing," and his voice was only lower pitched and slightly less manic from what he'd go on to do for the LT character.

Taz has one of the best cartoon designs, period! A hulking hairball with a giant mouth and gangly arms and legs is just amusing to me. I think my favorite appearances of his were some of the classic shorts, "Taz-Mania," the "Beauty and the Beast" parody in "Animaniacs," playing the Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come/Future, and the Christmas episode of "Looney Tunes Cartoons." As for his portrayal in "The Looney Tunes Show," even though I'm not a fan of Taz acting like a pet dog, I will admit that it's interesting how he looks a bit more like his real life counterpart when walking on all fours. Plus, I loved how his introduction in that show referenced the opening of "Jurassic Park."
