I was selected for Gymnastics at my school, and I was really into it. I loved Beam, Floor and Uneven Bars, but I was totally terrified by the Vault. I am happy my parents and coaches took me serious and never pushed me into doing it. I really had a bad feeling and now I think I would be injuried today if I would have pushed me to do it. I have the greatest respect for these ladies, that they can do something crazy like that and feel comfortable with their sport. Go ladies!

For anyone wondering why they changed the vault apparatus in 2004, it was because in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics they had incorrectly set it 5cm lower causing many gymnasts to overshoot it and injure themselves. The new design, and later with a slope, was designed to make it safer for the gymnasts if it were incorrectly set again.
@SaraNightfire1
@SaraNightfire1 2 ай бұрын
It also caused a lot of (rightly) international backlash. Especially with a lot of the top all-arounders ending up with falls and heavy penalties on the first rotation where vault was their starting point. A lot of the athletes were extremely rattled by that and it destroyed any chances of getting a medal. Even after the mistake was found and corrected and after they were offered to do the vault again with no penalty.
@shonda79able

That mistake cost 1 gymnast a gold medal. I don't remember her name.

@@shonda79able Several, actually. I know one of the top Russians got knocked out of the competition, and at least two Americans also lost any chances. It was probably one of the (if not most) controversial event in gymnastics history.

I think vault was much more difficult when you had a narrow rectangle that you were blindly flipping onto. Now they have a massive table to vault off. And yes, the tricks are more impressive, but what Boginskaya did took it to another level.
@starwarzchik112
@starwarzchik112 3 жыл бұрын
The reason they don’t have the narrow rectangle anymore is because someone slipped, broke her neck, and died. The newer vault design is much safer.

The direct comparison between Latynina and Biles gives the impression of completely different sports. Insane how the level changed. And just imagine how everyone in 1950 would have reacted if the best Athletes from 1988 onwards would have competed the same moves back then...

Would've been impossible though. Its not just athletes getting better, but also equipment and stuff. Put Simone Biles on a horse like they used in the fifties, and then see what she can do. Would actually be pretty interesting :)
@chooseyourpoison5105
@chooseyourpoison5105 3 жыл бұрын
@@lucypevensie4367 Not to mention that the beam back then was just a block of wood, and the floor was just that - a floor. No springs like today. The skills in the floor routine that Nadia Comaneci did back in 76 actually took enormous strength to do off a "dead" floor. I wonder how she would do on the modern sprung floors. Same with her dismount on beam - no sprung beam back then to add power to the dismount, it was all just pure muscle.
