I'm going to sound like a poor person but I was very excited about this, downloaded the software, click through all the steps and was told by the app it needs to be GoPro 5 or newer. Just in case anyone else was wondering.

Well that's a bummer! i just looked this up and apparently the only GoPro 5 with GPS is the Hero5 Black.

I had no idea about this. I tried this last autocross. While the software is finicky I got into work and was amazed!

Awesome news! Yes, the software is finicky and tricky to use and doesn't look like it's going to work right. But once you save and render, the end result looks perfect! I love using it and it's great for comparing your speeds through certain areas in different runs. I can see where I made up and lost time from run to run.

Was a replacement software ever found to do something similar since Quik Destop was discontinued?

I do this right on my iPhone. Super easy. What I'm not sure of is if the GPS sensor is 10hz or more of a standard phone sensor which samples slower. The lag compared with a dedicated GPS didn't seem too off for me at Laguna Seca.
@EvolutionAutocrosser5 жыл бұрын
I just looked it up. It appears the GoPro GPS is 18Hz. Digging further I found there are tools out there you can use to extract the metadata from the video to use however you want. For example you could overlay your path on google maps, etc
@nodrogkam5 жыл бұрын
@@EvolutionAutocrosser That's pretty darn good news then! I'd still use Harrys Lap Timer or similar app though to get more accurate track laps and corner/straight speeds. Really depends on the driver and if they do anything with the information. I think for 99% of enthusiasts the gopro data is awesome and is very easy to consume for them and for their audiences.
@EvolutionAutocrosser5 жыл бұрын
@@nodrogkam Yes! I think the GoPro speed and G force is going to help me a lot. But you're absolutely right that a data analytics tool is necessary for overlaying lines and more detailed information. I've been considering the Solo Storm system to do that. Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback!

@@21z3jbyrd For real, right! By the way, I recommend the Black if you want to ever use an external mic. Silver does not support an external mic. Another thing I'm just finding out the hard way.

The Quick software has been discontinued, but is available on thier legacy software page: community.gopro.com/t5/en/GoPro-legacy-software/ta-p/595533#/start=1

Well I’ll be darned! Is there another way / new software to do the overlays?

@@EvolutionAutocrosser I'm investigating. They have some sort of plug-in for Adobe Premier Pro. I've installed it, but I'm an Adobe Premeir Pro Newbie, and don't see what the plug-in does. Might be a good question for the GoPro Community forum. In the mean time, I downloaded and installed Quick, so at least we have that to fall back on. Might be wise to download and keep a backup of the Quick installer to assure future use.

@@EvolutionAutocrosser It gets worse. Quick development stopped, so there's no support for the 8. There's a workaround posted here: community.gopro.com/t5/GoPro-Apps-for-Desktop/Hero-8-Black-GPS-data-is-present-in-files-but-apps-say-it-isn-t/td-p/425835/page/4 but some have reported problems. You're welcome! I really like the GoPro Black because it has the audio support, 60fps of 4K and also has hyper stability which really smooths out the video when things get bumpy.

Nice tutorial! You would be surprised how many people don't know about this feature! A few of my friends have GoPros and had no idea it came with an internal GPS. They kept wondering how I was getting the telemetry data. lol So far it's been a nice tool to help analyze runs. I'm sure there are some better (more accurate) options out there, but it's great for my purposes. Every now and then the speedo can be a little laggy, but that might be because of a bad signal. Here's one of my vids with the gauges (kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6nalWCLqdiKqcU ). The STI has really short gearing and tops out around 55mph in 2nd. However we did have a fast enough course where I could shift to 3rd and hit about 59mph in the straight.
@EvolutionAutocrosser5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I see plenty of GoPro videos without the overlays so I have to assume most people don't know about it. The GPS onthe GoPro is 18Hz so the accuracy might be surprisingly accurate. Not sure though. I never look at my speedometer when autocrossing so I didn't know how fast I was going. Looking at the video I rendered for the example I can see I hit 60 twice on my run. This is mainly because I do the majority of the run in 3rd gear now since I've built the engine. I only need to drop to second for very tight turns then I go right back to third. I'll have to make a video on this soon.
@elusive58845 жыл бұрын
@@EvolutionAutocrosser Wow, you're running in 3rd now! That's cool! I guess the amount of torque you have makes 3rd very usable. I run in STU, so my power levels aren't much more than stock. Plus my tune is pretty conservative as I ride the limiter in certain situations. But that's really interesting. Do you suffer any turbo lag running in 3rd? Or is it mainly mitigated by dropping back into 2nd? Anyway, look forward to your runs!
@EvolutionAutocrosser5 жыл бұрын
@@elusive5884 Yes. I used to only run second gear. But now with the 2.4L build, he torque is insane at 465 Ft lbs at 3500 RPM, I run mostly in third gear. Otherwise second gear revs out too fast and I have to shift anyway. Yes there is some lag - but only until it spools back up to 3500 RPMs which only takes about a second then I take off like a rocket. Sometimes, when a turn is super tight, I'll go down to second gear but if I'm going in to a long straight right after it's not worth it because I'll just have to shift back up right away. I'll try to figure out how to demonstrate that on camera. Thanks for watching!!
