I feel that body hair is natural and is a beautiful thing. However if you want to remove your hair that's your business, you should just never feel that your are being forced to shave because of society's standards on women(or men) . There is nothing masculine about being hairy. Don't let anyone brainwash you to think this, ever! In conclusion there is no shame in hair or hair Removal if it is the person's choice.

I would have girls in gym class in highschool staring at my hairy legs until they found a free moment to say “wow, your legs are so hairy, that’s great for you! I could never do it, but all the power to you!” One even said, “So you’re a feminist, huh?” Just because I have hair on my legs. I can’t just exist in my naturally given body without someone assuming I’m trying to make a statement. It’s amazing how much courage you have to have to not shave hair that grows naturally on your body. Edit: Sorry, essay time...as a philosophy junkie, on a moral scale, being a good person is often quantified as acknowledging human autonomy, body and mind. This is not a new idea, academics quote Locke, Adams, Kant, Bentham, etc. The act of demeaning others for their own expression of bodily autonomy (regardless of gender norms and cultural norms) is morally wrong. You're probably not a cool dude if you do that. You as a human being should have no sway over what another living, breathing, dreaming human being does to their body. Because you have no right, and never will. And yet, it is an endless fight each day to receive this acknowledgment for so many groups of people. Say it with me, YOU HAVE NO RIGHT to control another humans' body. Whether its with body hair, grooming, gender expression, etc. And fuck anyone who says otherwise.

I'm so glad we can talk about it so openly now. For a really long period of time, for a few years actually, I was terrified because I had hair on my stomach and nipples. I thought I had a really bad disease, but was sooo afraid to ask my mother about it, so I stayed silent. And only when I became 22 I found the courage to go, do some blood tests and see how my hormones were doing. And you know what? I was completely fine. This hairness was just in my genes (I'm half Georgian, I have a lot of dark hair all over my body). But because I didn't see A SINGLE girl or woman with hair on their nipples or stomach around me, and everyone had smooth, hairless skin, I thought something was wrong with me... The amount of anxiety I've had during that time is unexplainable

I'm so glad i'm not the only one. I always found it hard to understand why I had so much hair in these places. I'm in a boarding school, so I live with girls. When we get ready for the shower, I notice that none of the girls have hair on their breasts, or even on their stomachs. As much as I'm not that bothered about the breasts, I'm more bothered about the stomach. When I wear a crop top, I always make sure to wear high-waisted jeans, while my other friends could afford to show their bellies, as well as having a flat one (the opposite of me). I always envied them. Also, one day while talking to some boy friends, I don't remember how we ended up on this subject, but they said that "girls with hair on their stomachs and breasts was disgusting and no guy would want them". At that point I didn't say anything about their comment, nor had I told them I had any, but I could feel my tears rising... It's also hard for me, because when I go on Tiktok, I keep seeing these beautiful girls showing their flat bellies, without a single hair. I know it's not their fault that I have it, and they don't. I just have a complex... Even though there are some two piece swimsuits that I think are amazing, I don't even dare to wear them for fear of being judged. I know I can wax, but my mother doesn't want me to. And I've only shaved once in my life, and now it's much thicker... I'm French so excuse me if my english is bad, i'm still learning.. But i really wanted to share this, i have no one to talk to about this. All the french youtuber that i know never talk about this stuff, so I really love to see this kind of content on youtube, cause i'm more comfortable, and I feel less lonely.💓💓

do people not realize that humans are literally mammals and growing hair on our bodies is just as normal as it is for a dog or cat to grow hair on theirs? it's refreshing to see people talking about this now. such an important discussion about how people are shamed for having normal bodies. and there are double standards in place too, where it's acceptable for a man to have body hair but it's "gross" if hair is anywhere on a woman's body other than the top of their head and their eyebrows basically.

Yeah, I think it's a bit dismissive of some of the more toxic traits of society / culture to say "it shouldn't matter what you choose one way or the other". They're right, in a perfect world, it shouldn't - people would look however they want to and no one would bat an eye. But this isn't a perfect world. In this world, there's a long history and deep rooted tendency to control women in a myriad of ways, even more so if there's a way to monetize it. The beauty industry greatly benefits from women feeling insecure, and that's something everyone should remember when they see advertisements for these kinds of things. I mean people need to be more honest here. If everyone thought you were just as attractive / clean with or without body hair, why then would you go through the painstaking / expensive process of removing it? For fun? Humans always take the lazy / cheap option if there's truly nothing to lose.

As a 16 year old girl who doesn't shave, I think its absurd that people think they have a say on whether you shave or not. If you like getting rid of body hair, for whatever reason, then do it. If you're comfortable with having body hair, or you don't feel like getting rid of it, then don't. I don't shave for the sole reason of me being lazy. It's just too much effort for me when it only takes a couple days to grow back. And that alone is a valid reason. In fact, you don't even need a reason at all to shave/not shave. As long as you're keeping yourself clean(washing properly, especially your pubic area) then there's absolutely nothing wrong with not shaving. Getting rid of body hair or keeping it are both completely up to you. And if you ever change your mind, then it's still up to you.

As an Indian living in a rural area, I haven't been shamed much for having body hair. However, though people don't openly talk about it, they do surely give body hair a thought. I have grown up with a lot of body and head hair. My skin is light for an average Indian and therefore it's very prominent. Then when I was 19, I was diagnosed with Pcod. The ultrasound lab doctor told my mother :"she has too much of body hair. And her hair is also thick." Then I was given birth control pills though I could continue them for only three months. When I was on the pill I lost body hair significantly but after I stopped taking them I started growing hair on body parts that I didn't have hair before. It's kind of weird how I hate my body for it.

@@DynamicFalafels I got diagnosed exactly a year ago, a few days before my 20th birthday. My periods were always regular, the basic 28 day cycle and I have never missed a period. The reason behind my visit to the gynecologist was my excessive cramps. The first two days are always very painful. However after the ultrasound was performed, my doctor found out multiple cysts on both of my ovaries. I was not given birth control pills for Pcod, it was just supposed to help me with the cramps though my gynecologist assured me that I could stop taking them if I felt uncomfortable. The pills were giving me a lot of issues - morning sickness, nausea, loss of appetite and energy and most importantly severe depression. After taking them for three months, I stopped.

@@samcarmen I wonder about this argument, as we've been socialised to see body hair removal as the norm, and not shaving as an active choice, often seen as a political statement. If someone wasn't raised seeing positive or neutral examples of people regarded as feminine with body hair, there is an inherent belief that it cannot be feminine to have body hair. Feminism is NOT about 'freedom of choice', feminism is about emancipation from patriarchal society. Often that means recognising that things like body hair removal, cannot truly be a choice when it is regarded as the default. Freedom of choice can only be considered part of feminism when it isn't a result of patriarchal socialisation. I'd never shame someone for shaving, I, myself, remove my underarm hair but no other hair (if I'm truly honest with myself, it's not aboyt hygiene as I like to justify it, but social perception). Despite this, I cannot get on board with the idea that body hair removal is a choice people would make without the social conditioning of femininity = hairlessness, make up etc.

For an ecg, they have to put these sensors on your wrists and ankles too. They lifted up my pants, and low and behold - unshaved legs. What came next was so embarassing, shocking and saddening to me at the same time, that I remained speechless. I could see on those men's faces the disgust, and they whispered smth to eo then turned to the doc and said: "i think it's just a panic attack." Then to me: "Miss, are you depressed?" Of course, they assumed that it was a mental issue, just because I didn't shave for a week. Goes without saying that women need to be porcelain dolls to be taken seriously in society.

thank you for this :) as a young woman with relatively high testosterone (still waiting on a pcos diagnosis), i've struggled a lot with having more hair than most of the girls around me. it's always made me feel less "feminine", so i've always tried to hide or get rid of my hair out of shame. the problem is that my skin is really sensitive, so shaving would always leave razor burns, and epilating and waxing would leave long-lasting inflamed pores and ingrown hairs. eventually i disliked my body, my hair, and my skin so much that hair removal became a kind of self-harm practice for me. i wanted to rip the hair out and cause my body pain, because it was so "masculine" and therefore unlovable. after experiencing a very difficult year or so, i decided this summer to let my leg hair grow out as an experiment. so far, nobody has told me that it is ugly or makes me look "unfeminine." a lot of the judgment i was afraid of was just in my head. and although some people do stare at me funny, i don't really mind because i've found many things to love about myself besides my physical appearance and whether others think i'm pretty! so overall, it has been a very freeing experience for me to just present myself as i am, and let others decide whether or not they want to stick around. as a recovering people-pleaser, it takes a lot of courage, but i think it's been a really nice everyday, physical reminder that it's okay to be me, even if others don't particularly like it. blessings to all you lovely people out there

I am from a country where the majority of the population has light-brown hair, so I, a dark-haired girl with a lot of body hair, had a really hard time at school (my classmates bullied me and called hairy gorilla). I spent hours shaving, but felt so uncomfortable walking around with constant skin irritation and ingrown hairs, so i just wore long sleeves and pants all the times. I stopped shaving as hard as I used to since high school and it was best decision ever: my skin got a lot better, I became more confident and open. And my boyfriend actually has a poor eyesight, so he doesn't care about it.

thank you for this video!! I firmly believe that body hair removal is a very personal choice, so whether someone does or does not shave, I will support that, as long as it is the choice that person wants to make. but I think it is incredibly important to be aware of the role the media and other people in our surroundings might have on what we think our desires or wishes are: the first time I ever felt the need to shave my body hair was in middle school (probably around 12 years old) when I was wearing a tank top with some jacket over it to school. one girl in my class apparently noticed my arm-pit hair and started questioning me why I wasn't shaving yet. according to her, "that's just something us girls need to start doing at our age". she then proceeded to tell everyone else in our class about this and a majority of them started making fun of me for the rest of the day and asking inappropriate questions. that night I sat at home in the bathtub crying, trying to explain to my mother why she needed to teach me how to shave my arm-pit hair immediately. after that incident, I was practically obsessed with shaving my hair every week for about four years. then, I did a full 180 and refused to shave any of my body hair because I felt ashamed of 'having been conditioned into appealing to the male gaze'. now I feel like I'm at a point where I found a middle ground. I do like shaving and do it from time to time, but it's not like anyone can tell me what to do with my body hair anymore. which is a great outcome to this whole situation, but I can't get the image of twelve year old me walking through store after store in order to find the most successful shaving products out of my head. I think it's incredibly important that we start talking about topics like this more, even if we at first find them embarressing or trivial. to think that twelve year old me was shamed into shaving my body hair by other twelve year olds that had probably also been shamed into thinking like this by either their parents or the media they had been consuming... and that was in 2012.

Advertising makes viewers believe that there is something wrong with their bodies and creates insecurities in them for example lotion that advertises to remove stretch marks when it doesn't even do much but waste your money. There is nothing wrong with your body, it is just society and their opinions. You are beautiful, always remember that! The past year or so I’ve fully embraced it and I honestly feel more beautiful and liberated with it. I knew in myself but never wanted to admit that I was shaving to satisfy ex-partners or just other people in general. I’m all for shaving if you know in yourself you’re not insecure about having the hair, that’s what leads to issues. I’d shave every day and constantly go over razor bumps, it was a MESS 🙃

But as soon as i turned 13 and finally got my first phone and kept hearing from my mother that i should shave i did, and now i feel uncomfortable having hair on my body. Sadly, my internalized misogyny remains in my subconsciousness. In which I still get uncomfortable (in a split second) seeing women with a lot of grown hair. However, surrounding myself with a lot of empowered women, helped me unlearn these things. Slowly but surely, I am now getting more comfortable seeing "hairy women" to the point that I tried it myself. In the end, I realized I prefer to remove it, as it contributes to my body odor. I would never judge a woman who prefer to grow it tho. After all, hair really is just hair.

I used to get made fun of because I had a lot of hair on my arms and now I’m fine with hair on my arms. I do occasionally shave because I decide to. It’s become such a societal problem that a lot of women get labeled as being a man for having body hair and women who choose to shave are deemed for doing it for men. I’ve even seen guys at school get made fun of because they Barley had any body hair and were considered “ not mainly enough” and too feminine. Like body hair is just what it is body hair and if you choose to shave or grow it that’s your business.

I used to think I was weird for having a hairy back/torso/nips/arms because I didn't realize so many of my friends/family shaved or waxed it off! I'm pretty pale so my hair is quite prominent on my legs\pits etc... but it gave me the courage that it was normal to try growing it out or once since I was a tween, and deciding for myself if I actually wanted to be natural or not. The only reason I shave or cover up most of my body is because I don't have the energy and emotional resilience to deal with people giving me their unwanted opinion on my body when I'm just trying to live my life. People feel very welcome to have a nasty opinion on an afab person having body hair, even right to their faces. How is this normal? And yes, this has happened to me before.
