5:33 Jill's answers keep getting tighter and tighter. It is too bad she was not on the debate stage with Trump and Biden. It would have been a shocking contrast. The entire dynamics would have been completely different. Biden would have looked even worse. I doubt Trump would have been able to resist attacking her. I wonder what they would both say about Russia.

JILL STEIN 2024
@PeterCraigMartin
@PeterCraigMartin 3 күн бұрын
I don't recall that Jill distinctly mentioned this, but embargos and sanctions on select Latin American countries are also _major_ drivers of immigration to other Western-Hemisphere countries, including the US, where employers _love_ cheap labor with zero rights and where rent-gouging landlords _love_ millions more tenants in the demand pool. Venezuela and Nicaragua are being hard-hit right now - I believe over _5 million_ Venezuelans have fled their country - but Cuba is the grand-daddy of them all, with its embargo now in place for 62 years and counting. What these countries have in common is that they won't allow American corporations and billionaires to plunder their peoples' resources and markets at will. They are called "socialist," and since the American narrative is that that socialism of any stripe is doomed to fail all on its own, I suppose the US thinks it's doing these countries a favor in trying to hasten the process by stealing their overseas assets, preventing them from exporting what they produce, preventing them from importing what they need, and mounting repeated coup attempts. Exporting freedom and democracy, winning hearts and minds, destroying the village in order to save it… We've heard it all before, and ordinary Americans don't want it done in their name, especially since we are indirect victims (multiple ranks below the direct victims, but still). Put the blame squarely where it lies: on the Fortune 500, on the Forbes 400, and on their servants in the military-industrial-congressional-intelligence-media-academia-think-tank complex.

@PeterCraigMartin 9 сағат бұрын
@@kateoneal4215 Sure, but not specifically in _this_ particular interview. I wish she had, since I'd venture that sanctions are currently the _leading_ cause of illegal immigration to the US and thus warranted highlighting. (Back in the 80s, the leading cause was probably US-backed military régimes, counterrevolutionaries, and death squads. I don't think it's _ever_ been "socialism" per se as much as the US response to it.)

Very interesting interview with Dr. Stein. She has a lot of sensible points. One thing I would have to ask, however, is how does she propose to handle Vladimir Putin, especially if she wants to halve the military budget? This monster will run roughshod over everybody. And what about our relations with China? The Middle East? What would be some viable alternatives? Our young people in the military have performed unflinchingly to protect shipping in the Red Sea. This speaks to the economy of the entire planet. If we cut our support of these efforts by half, what happens to it? I'd much rather see our tax dollars go toward improvements on the homefront, too, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the world we currently live in.

RFK cares more about Israel. He’s basically going to be the same thing we’ve been getting for decades. He supports what Israel is doing to the Palestinians. We already have that in Trump & Biden. RFK has billion dollar SuperPac. Who do you think he’ll represent? His billionaire donors or the people? He’s against universal health care. How can anyone be against universal health care? 70K ppl die annually due to lack of health care. People are drowning in medical debt. Stop idolizing politicians because you like their personality. By voting for who we think will win instead of voting for who we’d like to see win, is what got us into the mess we’re in now. How about you just let people make up their own minds by checking out the policies each candidate is running on & vote for the candidate they most closely align with? You know, democracy.

@@agwardenPlease. Her answers about Israel were clear, concise and entirely appropriate. As someone from a Jewish background, she has been well-versed on this issue for decades and even mentioned documentation released in the 1990s which verified everything she said. Her responses on every question she was asked were equally coherent, clear, well-informed and apt. She's appeared with Katie Halper, Glenn Greenwald, Kim Iversen, George Galloway and with Jeffrey Sachs and others who are credible, serious journalists and commentators. I like Dore but he's not in their league. She has gone head to head with the best. What's he going to ask her that you think she can't handle. Were you even listening?

The concept is if we stop spending masses of money on funding wars, then there would be plenty to spend on citizens and their actual needs, which she tediously lists out every single time she talks about it. Switching to Medicare for All would save Americans *OVER A TRILLION DOLLARS A YEAR* while providing everyone first-dollar coverage for pretty much ALL healthcare services and products. You see, we don't just have a huge amount of duplicative administrative overhead (you can call it waste, featherbedding, or skimming if you want). We _also_ have a huge amount of _outright price-gouging._ That's because unlike virtually every other developed country, we don't use a single agent to "monopsonistically" bargain uniform fees and prices on behalf of patients. (A monopoly is a single seller, and you know what happens to prices and services under a monopoly. A monopsony is a single _buyer,_ and more or less the opposite happens.) SCHOCKING EXAMPLES OF PRICE-GOUGING I had several diagnostic tests/procedures done last year at a public university hospital, billed out at my state's traditional-Medicare rates. Medicare rates are typically the second lowest in the US, higher than Medicaid but lower than private-insurance rates. Out of curiosity, I compared my bills with what I would have been charged at a private clinic in France, from a similarly credentialed specialist MD with 27 years of experience, using the same equipment. The French charges were based on negotiated "national health insurance" rates. • One of the diagnostic procedures I had was billed out *51 times higher* here in the States ($5,403.74) than it would have been in France ($105.39). • Another was billed out *58 times higher* ($6,917.49 vs $120.18). • Another was billed out *77 times higher* ($7,303.07 vs $94.86). • Another was billed out *26 times higher* ($4,337.29 vs $168.68). I remind you that the American rates I was billed were "unfairly low" Medicare rates. And these types of differences are not a French peculiarity. I ultimately needed an operation and, facing an eight-month wait here in America, I had a Japanese friend check out options in Japan. The _total charge_ at a well-regarded surgical specialty clinic in Hokkaido would have been less than my 20% Medicare co-insurance out-of-pocket was here. And that included a full week of inpatient post-op recovery with meals, compared to the 24-hour bum's rush I was treated to here. (Japan, along with Switzerland, gets pretty much the best average medical outcomes in the world. The US is close to the bottom of OECD countries, ahead of Mexico and Turkey.) So, by dramatically reducing administrative waste _and_ price-gouging, switching to Medicare for All would save _more money_ than if we zeroed out the defense budget _entirely._ But there's one more major problem with American healthcare on top of administrative featherbedding and price-gouging: we train and license almost _a third fewer physicians per capita_ than the developed-country average. Virtually _no one_ in the healthcare-reform movement seems to want to acknowledge this elephant in the room. The only public personality I'm aware of who mentions it from time to time is economist Dean Baker, and he tends to emphasize that it's the reason American physicians are paid nearly double the developed-country average for physicians (a simple question of a professional cartel restricting supply to jack up incomes). But no matter how abusive it feels to be gouged by the people we're supposed to entrust our health to, our undersupply of physicians has other _even more dire consequences:_ • It's the leading cause of long waits for diagnosis and treatment. • It's the reason doctor visits for most Americans are few, far between, and sometimes short to the point of being perfunctory. • It's the reason many physicians don't have time to thoroughly familiarize themselves with new patients' medical records and to refresh their recollection before the next visit. • It's the reason Americans can't get same- or next-day appointments with GPs and are forced to go to the ER instead. (I got 'em all the time in France.) • It's the reason American doctors don't make house calls. (French doctors do.) • It's the reason behind physician overwork and burnout. Thus, in addition to switching to Medicare for All, it's critical that we also _dramatically_ increase the number of physicians we train and license. Otherwise, we're going to end up like Canada, which _also_ produces around a third fewer physicians per capita than the developed-country average and where waits are even _longer_ because Canada doesn't ration care through ability to pay like we currently do here. And if American physician incomes fall from _egregious_ to just _high_ as a result, which they will, I'm playing the world's smallest violin. They'll still do very comfortably well.
