Most of all I hope they were able to receive any mental help if they needed it and that they all are able to finally achieve their dreams happily and healthily. laws and regulations, and the enforcement of them, are currently not sufficient to prevent stories like this. there should be a defined governing body that can, among many things, determine a company's financial fitness to field a kpop artist or group. allowing just anyone to do it is how you end up with a mess like this. the lack of financial support leaves the artists themselves vulnerable to exploitation. there's no reason anyone should have to go through it, and no reason the person/s responsible should ever get away with it.

You basically covered everything I wanted to say. When I've seen these scandals covered I've always been curious if Korea has an employment standards act. Also, given how much the Kpop industry is worth, there should be a governing body that maintains standards. Dare I say Kpop idols should have a *union*

Hearing horror stories like this makes me really angry, but also super apprehensive to support groups from lesser known agencies.. I know these idols need nothing more than support, but I can't help but think about how horrible I'd feel if I supported a smaller group and it later came out they were being mistreated like this. I'd rather give them more reason to exit their agency and support them later, but then how can you be so sure that they're even being mistreated? There doesn't seem to be any obvious signs because these companies force them to hide it.

Horrifying!! I've noticed that the entertainment industry from videogames to performance have these "companies" that prey on young talent who don't yet know their workers' rights or they target youth who aren't considered a part of the legal workforce, and this age loophole allows them to use a career as bait to abuse them until the talent drop out. Shining a light on this will can get the word out to upcoming talent who can realize if they are being led on! Never work without a contract! Always get your contract checked by a lawyer to see if you are being fairly treated!!

Happy to see more serious interviews with active and former idols. Maybe these kinds of interviews are done in Korea, but if you're a foreigner who doesn't speak Korean, you need subtitles for interviews. Unfortunately the only subtitled material that is somewhat widely available are all those variety shows that endlessly repeat the same meaningless, banal, superficial and boring questions. If there are interviews with idols covering serious topics, and with subtitles, I have barely seen any. This interview with Dayul certainly raised a whole lot of questions. Unfortunately, due to the odd Korean libel laws, not all questions can be asked, or claims made, even if they are true, since people can still sue you for true statements. Nevertheless, I would have liked to have heard more about the CEO. What kind of person did he seem to be? The group spent a long time with him. What perception did they get of him, his personality and mindset? What was he like in the beginning, and how did he change? Did they have a distant, very formal relationship in which he just met them occasionally and told them what to do? Or was it mostly a close relationship during which they got to know each other's personal histories, which was punctuated by bad moments when he just rejected their requests and refused to help? Considering the lack of support for the group and Dayul, the kind that even smaller companies try to scrape together for at least music shows and competition shows, it makes it seem as if the company was just a pure scam. In hindsight, would Dayul describe the company as that? The CEO got paid for performances, but lied about it? Was he the kind of guy who decided to enter the music industry just so that he could make money off young, hopeful people in an opaque industry? Was he the founder and sole employee of the company? Did he have any background in music himself? Did he offer any guidance for performing, or did he just sit in his room, and once a week tell the members to practice on their own and figure out all the details themselves, while in the meantime he disappeared somewhere? If he didn't get stylists, make-up and hair artists, or make sure that the girls had proper stage outfits, did he follow them along to any performances? Was he maybe the one driving when they went to a concert far away? What exactly did the man do? Did he seem incompetent, completely out of his depth? The CEO didn't stand up to the business people who harassed the girls because he needed the business people to be happy? That raises the question, would he have defended the girls if he was not dependent on having a relationship with the business men? Or was he the kind of sleaze ball who thinks it's perfectly acceptable to pass young women around like toys during business meetings? At 21:04 Dayul said there were old girl group clothes lying around. Does that mean the CEO had managed other girl groups before? Does this mean he had been in the industry for a longer time? Does this also mean he genuinely wanted to succeed, but just couldn't get the business running? What exactly were his ambitions, what did he try to achieve? Did it come across as if the CEO wanted to support the girls financially, that deep down he had that kind of an understanding side to him, but the company simply was in a bad spot financially, so that's why he refused to help, and expressed himself brusquely because of the pressure he felt? How was the start at the company like in detail? One day out of the blue Dayul found out a new group was debuting, and she decided to join it? How did the company seem like in the beginning? What was promised at the time? The members' parents must have been present. What was their reaction to the company, especially when later on they realized they were paying for most of what their daughters needed while under contract with a business? Dayul said the parents were unfamiliar with the music industry, which is understandable, but how could they not be resistant to having to pay for what the company should pay for? Did Dayul have other potential companies lined up, or did she join the one she did because it was the only option she had, meaning that she settled? Does she now regret not waiting for a possible offer from another company? I would also have liked to have heard what she thinks about the K-pop industry from a larger perspective. Based on her experience, what are the pitfalls, how can they be avoided, and how could the K-pop industry be made better? [EDIT] Corrected a few typos.

I'm glad she and her friends got out when they could ,cuz if they continued they would have come across a situation that would have ended up in sexual assault, murder and/or suicide. Building themselves up solo and working together to promote their brand should be the next step....i think they should work together and create songs and mass produce them. They have enough experience on how to create their own agency even!! All these hardships helped them see all the facets that make up what running an agency would look like. Yes, she's right.....don't give up and keep pushing forward. They made the right decision to leave. Fighting!!

I'd say don't worry, just keep doing what you love and work hard at it and you will be successful. It reminds me of BTS' Suga when he talked about when he first started out at a small agency and BTS got so much hate in the beginning. Suga ever talked about how he got ripped off for some of the beats and music he produced. They down right didn't pay him but look at where he stands now, where BTS stands, what BTS did for themselves as a group, individual, for a small unknown company, for kpop, and even for their country while all the haters would say they would fail. The same thing happened with Mamamoo. The CEO for Mamamoo said he was so excited with their talent and showed other CEOs in the industry their pre-debut singing and they all said that they would fail bc all they could focus on was their looks and not their incredible talent -and they were so wrong. *Haters only win when you listen to them.* Ignore them and do you, and you will already be successful. If you make music that touches ppl heart, then they will listen and be a fan so keep working on YOUR music and you will gain followers even though you had a bad run with shady CEO's. That's all I've got to say. I've also had my bad share of "freelance work" -unpaid. I work in the visual arts (I don't have the gall to say I'm an "artist" per se since I don't do gallery work like that, but I have work on some major commercial work for many major brands) and all thru my young life thru highschool, college, and when I was look for my first job I had nothing but haters telling me I will never get a job ect ect but I didn't listen to any of them. I kept work on fine artistic skill and computer art skill, learning softwares thru the night while only focused on me and my goals and landed in a major TV network as my first professional job and my work is strewn all across the US with millions of ppl looking at it. I still remember the day when all my classmates & fam asked about my job interviews since they were nosey (they were all haters talking smack) and all I said was yea, I was hired and kept walking. I got there by focusing on goals, not nay say-ers. So I truly believe that if you focus on your goals and work hard at your craft, your talent and skills will be recognized. She's in a better place to do what she wants to do now.

This is not to justify all small ent. companies but only some of them. Usually people start a company to become successful with their artists but other than that, they just want money. Like in her case, the CEO itself has a problem and it leads to the company failure. All her references about the CEO (the way he treated them) just shows his intention on building his company. He didn’t care about the artists wellbeing, salary and he can’t even provide them with basic things like other artist. I’m so sick with these kind of people. They think everything they do is always right, but sadly it isn’t. These young girls and boys just want to a performer, a singer, a dancer, they dream big and work hard to be better. But oh boy some people take advantage of them like some toys that can be played around. If you think you’re a Human, then treat them like one. I really hope they get justice and find dream at a better place🙏🏼

I've been reading manga and most of idol manga that i read they have sponsor where they used thr body in exchange of appearance in drama or any song...and if u have powerful sponsor which means u will appear more in the drama... that's why everytime i watch some drama or idol performances i keep thinking does this person have sponsor??? If u knew PAYBACK novel or manga there's alot of sponsor who is company official disgusting...

It would have been nice if they decided to use the dirty, ripped costumes from previous girl groups, like use the grossest things they could find, and wear that to the dinners with the CEO and business men LMAO 😂 keep them grossed out enough not to touch you, and also show how stingy the CEO was

Korea really needs to stop putting all of these unhealthy practices in place when it comes to how people eat & look. All of these unhealthy diets like an apple a day or 1 sweet potato is horrible! Green vegetables, protein & water twice a day will keep you full and give you enough energy without you gaining weight. It's much healthier too. As for looks, what does it matter what you look like if you can really sing, rap, dance or act?

@ Brenna The cat lover don't act so naive,he apologized bc he HAD to,that doesn't make what he did any less s*tty and it's not the first time female idols have been disrespected by their male counterparts which is bc many of them disrespect women in general coz you oppa loving fangirls put them on a pedestal (take seungri as an example among others)

Thats why mostly Top entertainment idols have more success, since they have more Money and resources. The idol industry is already oversaturated, so it will be more difficult for everyone to succeed. Either you really have to have the star quality, looks, luck or big agency backing you up. But still sad that many unknown or underrated groups have to suffer :( However thats how harsh the entertainment industry is.
