In this exclusive clip, Tyson asks Hawking your standard softball interview question: what was around before the big bang? In other words, what happened before the moment the universe began? Check out Hawking’s answer:
“The boundary condition of the universe...is that it has no boundary,” Hawking says.

Mr Henry Cruize, actually time does exist, it's our current perception of time that is the cause of confusion. Time doesn't exist by itself, neither does space, it's time-space, which Einstein tried to explain. It's the same with matter and energy, but that one is more simple to explain. These are the two of the "big four" where we have yet to explain relations of the remaining two, i/e gravity and magnetism (which is the next one I believe).

Hawking - 'Real time is replaced by imaginary time'. Yeah real theory is replaced by imaginary theory. I'm sick of these Jokers getting high off their own farts! The 'Euclidean' approach he's talking about just means in paraphrase 'we made up a bunch of stuff, assumed it was right, made further calculations based on the stuff we made up and now we're presenting the findings as proven fact'. I can't wait until theoretical physicists stop presenting their theories as fact and just admit they don't know what happened at the formation of the universe and as yet we have no way of proving what did happen. I mean the 'Big Bang'? even a child can see the gaping hole in that theory and will immediately ask where did the big bang come from? Hawkings answer - 'well space-time is like a 4 dimensional sphere like the earth and if the earth stops at the south pole then space-time must also stop at its south pole, therefore there was nothing before the Big Bang'. actual quote from the video watch it back lol

It's only a small part of a much bigger statement/theory. There has to be more to what he said,this is only an excerpt. Those truly interested will either search for the entire thing or wait until it finds them,some others will complain because it wasn't all handed over easy enough. I don't much like science using teasers and such but I do know they do it almost as often as they mix lots of filler with comparably few new facts in documentaries. Ah well,maybe it just feels that way. :)

What existed "before" the Big Bang is the wrong question. The preposition "before" implies time, since space and time were created from the Big Bang, there is no "before". The correct question is "how" did the Big Bang occur. Stephen Hawking sums it up at the end of the video: "There is nothing south of the South Pole, so there was nothing around before the Big Bang".

Isn't that just asking the same question in a different way? There had to be something before the big bang for the big bang to happen. How does something come out of nothing if it didnt exist to begin with? The only thing that makes sense is that there has always been some sort of energy in existence resulted in everything else.
@KennisonDF
@KennisonDF 2 жыл бұрын
As there is nothing (no place, i.e., no non-zero, bounded surface area) south of the South Pole, because the South Pole is the southernmost point in the unbounded, non-Euclidean 2-space that constitutes the surface of the Earth; so also there is nothing (no physical phenomenon, i.e., no non-zero, bounded region of space-time) before the Big Bang, because the Big Bang is the earliest point in the unbounded, non-Euclidean 4-space that constitutes our observable universe. As the surface of the Earth is not a place, i.e., not a non-zero, bounded area of the surface of the Earth; so also our observable universe is not a physical phenomenon, i.e., not a non-zero, bounded region of space-time. Only physical phenomena have beginnings in our observable universe. Since our observable universe is not a phenomenon in our observable universe, it makes no sense to speak of it ever having been physically caused or created.

3carbon6 there's actually some people convinced there's some conspiracy around Hawking, as he should've died decades ago with his medical condition. Apparently no one else with his specific condition has survived into old age as he has!

Some say that there are multi-verse instead of uni-verse for that reason the big band happened as two universes collided, or one universe split and formed two universes. The whole universe was in a BANG .

Liquid Helium So if you get to see Tyson. ask him why Quasars ejected on both of poles of a galaxy with luminous threads attached and interacting with the galaxy having significantly higher red shifts then the mother galaxy. This discovery has destroyed the red shift means of measurement. This is also noticed on companion galaxies in particularly NGC 7603 and NGC 7603bwith a red shift of kz 16800 while NGC 7603 main Galaxy has a red shift of only kz 8700 being only half as much but still interconnected. This difference would place the galaxies far far apart with no chance of interaction. So Tyson had never seen or heard of a gyrocopter? I guess he missed Mad Max.

Absolutely right, nothing is infinite or eternal, asking what was around before the big bang is like asking how life was before it began, the real question is how did the big bang occur and I'm sure future scientists will finally find the answer, RIP professor hawking

Before the "Big Bang" there existed Consiousness. The DESIRE of Consiousness to express itself accumulated and finally expressed itself with the "Big Bang". All dimensions, beings, plants, animals, minerals, gasses, molecules, and atoms came into expression into physical reality. Consiousness is still developing and we are a part of that too. Forever expanding...

Um... okay. I do find it hilarious that so other commenters immediately went to "it was God"... which IS NOT an answer. Though Hawking's answer doesn't satisfactorily sate me, science isn't about the answers WE LIKE. I personally think more answers are to come.

A No, it's about answers that can be proven by more than "that's what I feel inside". I was raised Christian⛪, so I have no problem with faith (quite the contrary), but I do have a problem with the thought of someone's intangible belief being superior to proven facts. 1➕1 doesn't equal 2 because of "belief".

To be honest, we are not able to comprehend outside our own dimensions. We have theories to help us if you think about what he said - “There is nothing beyond the South Pole” Actually there is, if we keep going we eventually return to the point at which we began. So, is he saying that (given the universe is the shape of the earth) if you travel far enough you will return to the beginning? That would make some kind of sense.
