The favorite in my workplace is someone who is best friends with the assistant manager and produces 5% of the work that everyone else does. She is also a troublemaker. I’m sure this is not uncommon.

Most favoritism is clearly favoritism, it's not that hard to spot. A boss would have to be a complete moron to heap praise upon praise on one person in front of the entire team for months without the real reason being revealed, duh.

Dealing with it now. Incompetent, unqualified leadership from the director down to my direct supervisor. I am 49 years old and in my 15 plus years as an educator, have never encountered this type of disorganized, backstabbing, inequality in a department. I've used all of the suggestions in this video and more, which resulted in me being labeled as the problem. Unfortunately, quitting is NOT an option.

When this happens, honestly it’s time to leave. In the REAL WORLD favoritism doesn’t change in the workplace. I’ve seen it happen to others throughout my working career, and it also happened to me. The “favorite” can do no wrong, will continue to get special treatment, and the boss will have a blind eye to all wrong doing that has occurred. So save yourself some grief for something you cannot change and just leave all the toxicity behind you. It’s very refreshing on the other side, I promise.
@ryanbarker3978
@ryanbarker3978 7 ай бұрын
Do. Not. Treat. People. Like. This. If you’re a leader, you are responsible for developing EVERYONE that reports to you, not just your “favorite”. This is also how high performing teams get broken apart. The “there can only be one” mentality is so toxic and can kill professional relationships.

It's in the business model of -it seems like-every company in existence now. It's like there was a secret book published by an evil billionaire/sociopath that has been printed in mass and given to those who go through the evil business ritual/initiation of losing their soul and all of their humanity.

I agree with the video, but it also comes down to certain people just being manipulative. I have seen it so many times, they have a way to manipulate their bosses or key people who they will be able to manipulate. Not everyone means well. An example is one coworker I used to have, she would park where she was not supposed to park, but she flirted with security to get away with it. She was the laziest coworker I had ever worked with. She manipulated the secretaries to have extra time out for lunch, etc. And she moved up pretty quick. Many later felt dumb after having helped her, by then it was too late. What bosses and key people should promote are the workers who are diligent and consistant with less talent for gab.

Thank you for your advice. Yes, i always told myself that i should not let the behaviour, opinion, beliefs of other towards me dictates how i feel or how i live my life. I was felt rejected, treated unfairly in the workpkace with my boss and other co-workers, at first i feel pity for myself and hurt and so emotional in silence but i change my mindset that if i let these things affects me, i will not grow and prosper or progress. I stand tall, i stand for myself. I didn't allow those things to affect me, and i know what i am capable of and i know who i am. I have more talent and skills it's just different from theirs.

I hope you're planning on leaving soon. Acting like what they do doesn't bother you but it does is bad for your mental health. People will screw with you as long as you let them, which means you will have to do the hard thing and stand up to them. Once you do that, you will get in trouble for defending yourself. So leave and find a place where people actually treat one another with respect. The boss don't give a shit. No point talking to him or her.

I’m 20 and experienced favoritism in retail. I worked at a daiso for 3 months. I was part of a new store setup so spent the first month and a half working full time helping set up the store. I was one of five less white employees on the team and the rest were Hispanic including the manager. I didn’t think much of this at first of course. But during store setup, they’d speak Spanish to each other majority of the time unless they were talking to me or one of the other two white employees. Then once we opened, things went downhill. The Spanish speaking employees got way more hours than me. And especially those who made friends with the manager. They got most of the hours. Even one of the associates was getting more hours than the store’s second assistant manager. And they continued to speak only Spanish unless they were talking to me. This made me feel so left out and discriminated. And when I quit they didn’t even say anything to me about it. I got no response to my two weeks notice email and no one said anything to me in person about it. Not even a simple thank you for your hard work text on my last day. The manager never said a word. That made me feel super disrespected. I put in so much hard work there and they didn’t even appreciate it. I’m so glad I’m out of there. It was quite the experience

I'm working in retail and ever since I've been at my current job I've been told "This guy is so good, he gets all the donations, and works so hard." I've observed him and all he does when he doesn't have a customer is look at celebrity gossip on the PC. The store manager told me "Stop putting stuff under the counter next to the register because that employee doesn't like it." Now that employee is even telling me to stop. I've told the other managers that is favoritism and is one of the definitions of a hostile work environment. I guess I'm gonna have to tell the store manager too. I get really nervous when I'm standing up for myself though. I do more than what is expected of me as well. Resetting plannograms, printing out price tags and putting them out, etc and I have brought it up and been told I do a good job. But the minute I try to make my job easier and faster I'm told to stop.

This is a difficult situation to be in Daletaco. It sounds like you're really proactive at work. For the things you'd like to change to make your job more easier, I'd run the idea by your boss first. Tell them what you'd like to do differently, why, and how it will help team. This might help them to be on board as it makes it seem like you're making the decision together.

When someone plays favourites and ignores merit its time to leave. Its a groupset of behaviours that some bosses have that you should be VERY weary of.. lying, spreading rumours about people they don't like, scheduling daily meetings and asking the person to quit, etc. it becomes a self fulfilling situation if the target complains about being picked on, the boss just says this person has a bad attitude. Once the person they were picking on quits or they fire them they just move on to another target...

This is a tough situation to be in. It seems you've already done the right things like talking to your boss. It's unfortunate, but sometimes people are just toxic and no matter what you do it won't change their behaviour or approach. If you're not being recognised for your potential, perhaps you need to consider moving teams/departments or at the last resort, companies. It's not easy. I know. And it's probably not what you want. But will you be happy if you stay in this toxic environment?

@@kararonin totally agree. I’m looking now. I had no control over my boss leaving and I took a $20k paycut which I’m mad that I did that so I’m interviewing and will let hr know what happened when I leave. I’m in my 50s too and it feels a bit discriminatory but hard to tell. He is aware that I have noticed favoritism and he gives me a virtual event to attend to appease me. I’m documenting everything he does. What’s sad is that I come in and put my head down and went through their training for a month. I will tell HR what he has done. He’s super inconsistent in his responses to me so I told him im not bringing it up again. I go around him for help because anything I sell, I dont want him having credit

So here’s one. I’m just a warehouse worker, material handler. I applied for material handler 3 and it was between me and 2 other guys. One being a favorite because there is a small group that hangs out together. So the favorite got the material handler 3. They told me it was not just the work but he did more projects. He didn’t ask to do them they picked him because he’s with the group. Also there’s more of one race so I’m outnumbered in the company so they are able to communicate better. So I have more experience and bust my butt. How can I not be upset I got over looked by someone who hangs out with that group and race when they stick together?
@kararonin
@kararonin 2 жыл бұрын
This must be a difficult situation to be in, especially if you're more experienced than the other person who is getting the better projects. I would talk to your boss and let them know you want to do those projects. Ask what you need to do to get them. As for the "group", try to connect with individuals in that group first. Find a similarity or commonality to connect on an individual basis. Or you can provide help/support for things they don't know how to do. Over time, do this with different individuals in that group and they may be more open to you.

Good question Rolan. Are there are other managers you can talk to? Do you have an HR department you can talk to? Sometimes these things can help in working through the favouritism. Keep in mind, and I don't say this lightly, but there are some work cultures that are toxic throughout. And no matter how much you try to fight against it, the toxic culture is so ingrained, it won't go away. If that's the case, you may need to decide whether there are better opportunities for you elsewhere. I'm not encouraging you to immediately quit, but to ask yourself whether you need to plan a career change.
