I'm not convinced Jazzercise is truly as ineffective as Dr. Mike suggests - I believe the only way to empirically test this is to have him do it and report the results. It would need to be filmed and uploaded too of course.. for science.

Oh my God. I’m probably the only guy that uses the RP app today who also did the Jane Fonda Workout with Weights (with Dan Isaacson) at 10:08 so it’s a total trip to watch Dr. Mike in this critique video. In spring 1989, I was lying on the grass in the quad at college with my shirt off and my eyes closed getting some sun and listening to people around me and I heard this guy say to his friend, “just take your shirt off, Man. The skinniest guy in the world over there has his shirt off!” So I waited a few seconds, sat up looked around and realized that I was the only guy they could be talking about. So that day, I went to The Wherehouse and bought the Jane Fonda’s Workout with Weights (at 10:08) VHS tape and did it EVERY Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for one year with my Marcy barbell and dumbbells and plates. My noob gains kicked in and it totally worked. I definitely looked bigger and stronger a year later and that gave me enough confidence to join a gym, Family Fitness Center that turned into 24 Hour Fitness. Flash forward to today, I’m 54, I can’t say I’m jacked because I bike and run a lot, but I’m totally fit and happy. This January, I started using the RP hypertrophy app and I’m definitely more muscly here in August than the start of the year. It all goes back to picking up that VHS tape and being consistent.

I was around 16 in the early eighties. For high school PE we went to a gym to do Aerobics. It was way more about dance moves than exercise moves. While at the gym one day, I peeked into the weight room. It looked like a real playground for serious athletes. I was curious. I went back to the gym on Saturday and asked if I could train in the weight room. The owner, was delighted and took me through my first ever resistance training workout. I was hooked. I ended up becoming a PT at 19 years old. But as part of my job, in 1987, I still had to lead aerobics classes. They were super fun and the music was awesome. I’m 58 now and still in great shape, still lifting. I left the aerobics in the 80s, but my dumbbells will be with me for life!😊❤

No matter what kind of video or gym or trainer you have, they all need to have the compassion and empathy that he had for everyone. He didnt care what size you were, where your level was, nothing. He just wanted you to get moving and be happy. What a sweet man. The firm videos, they were tough for me back then. Id like to see a review of them. There was quite a few.

As a fat kid, I hated exercise and couldn’t get into the idea of it until mom got me to do the videos with her. 4:30 - Dr. Mike caught me with an unexpected body blow here. My mom was 80 years old, and she wanted to get in shape for an upcoming wedding, so we bought her a recumbent bike for Mother’s Day this year. About 2 months later, we found her in her apartment, passed from an apparent heart attack.😢. My mom was the type that, when she did something, she did it 100%. Had I known this was such a concern, I would have done more to warn her to take it slow. I wish this video had come out 6 months ago. If you have an older loved one in your life, and they want to start exercising, tell them to TAKE IT SLOW. VERY SLOW.

My 10th grade PE class in 1988/89 was aerobics. We did a lot of Sweating to the Oldies and other aerobics videos. I loathed PE, so I took the easiest class I could. At the time, I thought I was grossly overweight (I wasn't). Women definitely didn't want obvious musculature. Just a flat stomach (which I've never had). Men expected women to be skinny almost to the point of emaciated. Now, much older, I do cardio/weight training 3 days a week and lead aqua fitness classes 5 days a week (aqua HIIT three days and aqua mobility two days). I also am physically healthier than I've been probably ever and at a lower weight than I have been in over 40 years. Not done, either. 51 y/o, living with Relapsing/Remitting MS with associated seizure disorder (both stable for five years), working on getting as fit as I can to stave off my MS progressing.

My Pops back in the 80s bought a lifetime membership for Vic Tanny which became Bally Fitness which is now LA Fitness. Somehow during each acquisition the lifetime membership carried over so my Dad only pays $80 a year for membership.

@@paddyleather5434 an $80 yearly renewal is insanly good. every year when he renews the service people have to call corporate inquiring if its real. every time the associates says, that is an insane agreement. its almost $80 a monthly membership. i asked him, he said to buy the lifetime membership was like $500 in the 80s which was expensive but worth it. i'm sure the renewal fee has changed with inflation so it wasnt always $80

Best video yet. I laughed a lot and learned a ton -- and I loved how you dissected 1980s exercise science and fashion game. (Your recommendation for an abdominal exercise is huge, too -- I've been doing an ineffective one I learned twenty-some years ago in high school.) And as a marketer, I'm blown away by your directional cues. Right before you previewed your app, you flexed your pecs and arms like an arrow toward the laptop next to you. And you flexed in sync with the syllables of the words you said. Brilliant. Thanks for keeping it real about which exercise approaches work for different needs, and for teaching me.

Dude…! The muscle pants we had in the 80s were excellent. Tons of ball room, tight in the butt, space for quads, no crotch bulge and a gnarly wide waistband so you never had ass crack showing when bending. Also, cutting your muscle shirt down the side to reveal your lats was de riguer! All songs including R&B included a guitar or sax solo… I’m telling you, bring that sh&t BACK!! We had answering machines that you could check remotely… I’m telling you, besides KZbin and info like Dr. Mike, nothing missing today!!!

My first gym membership was when I was 14 years old in 1987/88. It was a family membership. The place had Raquetball courts that hosted tournaments, nautilus/universal equipment and a carpeted group exercise room. It also had a full-service bar. So guys would do Raquetball, have some drinks, and then use the nautilus machines. My mom actually did Jazzercize or something similar because it was fun for her and she made some good friends.

I was born in 78 so the late 80s as a kid was when I started to get into fitness. The one thing I remember when starting out was all instruction was thorough, to the point and basic exercises that work. with a solid emphasis of 'no pain no gain' I also remember reading a lot about smiling lol. like near always reading instructions or cue's to "remember to smile through each rep to work those facial muscles" lol. Of what I remember everything (of what I saw at least) put a strong emphasis on the fundamentals. As opposed to years later everyone trying to reinvent the wheel "why you're doing dumbbell flyes wrong" "this hack will increase your biceps" "new best exercise to develop your quads" etc etc
