"DR" Mikey is a pathetic shill whose business model is to trash those more successful and popular than he is. There is a good reason to train specific things when exhausted for sports. When you're exhausted, you tend to focus on the pain and start to lose form. You want to train so you can learn to power through and keep proper form for whatever sport youre participating in. Id say that best way to implement that is by playing the actual sport once youre exhausted after training other specifics. You dont just lazily do shit while youre exhausted..
@DiamorphineDeath11 ай бұрын
Argument i’ve heard against this is that when it a technique dependent from a sports perspective, you don’t want to train it when you’re already pre exhausted, as one will potentially ingrain bad technique. Like the Pavel Teatsouline approach, at least I think this is where I picked this up from, is to train technique dependent things fresh and logically, and not to overcomplicate various aspects. The cardio is done to complement fight night, but no one gets awards or medals for hardcore training preflight. Hence Ali and Frazier doing bag work, road work, and chopping wood. None of those guys had bad gas tanks; dempsey, harry greb, etc; because they fought more frequently, which is direct skill training, did low impact complimentary training, and then by default, fighting a lot, means you get hit less, as fights are more frequent, and one’s livelihood depends on fighting at what very much was a fight a week during the great depression for some of these guys. Boxers now have what, one fight a year? Have next to zero sports specific training as far as a legit fight, outside of sparring, which is never full tilt, and then the idea of exhausting them, which they should never be in a fight, and then having them work on skill work makes no sense. They will not have power output to work on, a la bag or pad work, their form will be sloppy, and their cardio is already gassed. So the upside is a mental benefit of fighting tired? I don’t see the benefits enough there to train in that style

Not quite. If that were the case, then street fighters and backyard brawlers would be some of the best fighters in the world, and they're not. I think the problem is that actual fights or high intensity sparring are not good for developing skill and technique in a way that more relaxed and methodical drilling can do. Also, if you spar hard all the time, then either you're going to get injured a lot, or just after a while nobody else is going to want to spar with you.@@cartier13

@whiteflame2411 ай бұрын
if you're doing a combat sport the last thing you want to be doing in season is hypertrophy training. You can do that out of competition season for yourself to build back up a bigger baseline of muscle but during your competition season all it's going to do is overly fatigue you and stop you from doing the type of training you really need to be doing. Strength work should be basic movements, heavy, in the 3-6 rep range for 3-5 sets 1-2 times a week max. Conditioning should be one slow interval cardio like jogging and one high interval like sprinting a week and the rest of your training should only be whatever sport you are doing. I train kickboxers and mma fighters and what I always tell people is training should never be easy but it should be simple.
@TheAthanik7 ай бұрын
Like the content. As someone who has done boxing in my youth. When we trained the circuit. We did 2 minutes heavy bag, 1 minute rest, then 2 minutes jump rope 1 minute rest, then 2 minutes shadow boxing then back to heavy bag and repeat. Circuit training was uncommon, mostly focused training like heavy bag, shadow boxing, mobility training, pads, ring training, jumprope, and so forth. For strength was basic body weight squats, push ups, sit ups. Use of medicine balls was common as well.

I was a decently high level wrestler in high school. 4 time state placer, State finalist, went to Fargo a couple a times, not amazing but like know the sport pretty well. The way you train your strength and cardio for for wrestling, is wrestling. Doing iron man circuits, play wrestling, drill matches. It’s all stuff that helps you will wrestling positioning and movement while training your cardio. And outside of practices, when you’re doing the extra work, that’s when you introduce hard running and weight training.

How to adjust volume, frequency, intensity and maybe even diet, based around when you do or do not get enough sleep the night before. I’ve watched hundreds of boxing matches across multiple countries and I’ve never, ever heard an air horn from the crowd at any one of them.

3:05 it was a copout fight from the start. Jake knew he would lose so he gave Hasim a ridiculous time frame to come down to 200lbs even though he walks around at 240lbs and fights at 225lbs. There was also a no rehydration clause. So Hasim couldn't cut water to weigh in at 200 then actually rehydrate his body to not be half dead on fight day. Jake wanted to fight a dry half-corpse that had just lost 40lbs in 8 weeks.

5:55 He wasn't 215 when he agreed to the fight. He was 215 when he asked for a 1 month extension on the bogus time frame.

Hey Dr. Mike. New subscriber here. Love your videos. Very informative and entertaining. Would you be able to react to Brock Lesnar's training when he was in the WWE/UFC please? Would be very insightful.

I'd be curious to see a combat sports style program from Mike, or just some more sports performance type videos in general. I know it seems like hypertrophy is his area of expertise or interest, but he clearly has knowledge in the performance realm too

Glad I found your channel. I was a trainer about 15 years ago. I got out of it for some reason. But you're making me wish I would've stayed & continued my education. I wanna get back to it. Learned a couple things from you already. I think it's time. My knees are fucked though so building my legs & ass is gonna be an issue. Plus I'm almost 50 so , there's that. Maybe some trt to help? Maybe? Idk

Would love to see a video on increasing vertical jump and how much time should be spent on plyometrics versus weight lifting, and how to periodize them to get the best jump/power movement
