The USA isn't the city on the hill for Europeans. Too much poverty and inequality. It's ridiculous that you depend on your employer for health insurance if he can fire you the moment you get sick. It's ridiculous that when you get sick and don't get fired, your sick leave has to come out of your pto hours. It's ridiculous that employees are regarded as 'assets' that don't need a good work-life balance so you make them work 50 to 60 hours a week and they only get 10 days vacation (if they are so lucky). It's ridiculous that the minimum wage is so low that you need more than one job to survive if you are a low paid worker. I'm a 63 year old European. I make over 80K Euros a year working only 32 hours (4 days) a week. This year I already went on two short vacations and I have another two short vacations AND two longer vacations coming. I go to the gym two times a week after work, just because I have the time to do so. This keeps me fit and healthy. In my 43 year working career I've been unemployed for three months after leaving military service. In these 43 years I've worked for three (!) employers. If I become disabled or unemployed I know I won't end up in the street. If I become seriously ill and need extensive medical treatment I know I wont go bankrupt. I'm in the 48 percent tax bracket but I don't mind paying taxes because I know that if anything happens to me the social security system will take care of me. That's freedom!

From another Aussie, yes, trump was a disaster for us the first time, and we know he'll be worse the second. And it's not just trump. He is in such decline that he won't live four more years, but the regime he would install will, and those people follow the same ideology and are capable of actually implementing it. They áre the hegemony, dominating world politics. And now that the heat is on, you're complaining about us, wanting you to show your might? In Europe we had to demobilize, demilitarize after 1991. There was a reason to it; de-escalation to allow the eastern European countries to join in the prosperity-project we call the EU, while staying in decent relations with ruZZia. There even was a time, before 2007, that ruZZia was seen as a potential EU-partner, or something like that; a peaceful neighbour-nation. Eastern Europe didn't buy it, but western Europe certainly did. You can look at it cynically from a merely economic perspective, but there was certainly an ideology of peaceful equality behind it. The fact it failed, means we are re-arming at a rapid pace. Within 2 years Europe should be able to defend itself. Up to that time, we WILL need your arms-support. The problem with a trump-victory, compared to rising authoritarianism in Europe, is that the USA is 1 nation. The EU is 27 countries, some of which have the same problems. We are still able to counter it, since most of the countries are still decent democracies. But if the USA turns fascist, it is a sudden all-in: The largest economy on the planet suddenly being fascist, instead of something like Hungary with a GDP of less than $200bln.

The USA has 750 bases in at least 80 countries around the world (Source: Al Jazeera, Sept 2021) plus additional 800 bases in the country. Other sources estimate 900 facilities in approx. 100 overseas countries. This means at least half of US military installations are in the country. 2023 deployment data by Statista shows that 91% of US military and civil personnel are stationed in the country, whereas only 4% are stationed in Europe. Another 4% in East Asia and Pacific, and the rest in Middle East and Africa, though that might have shifted considering the current events in Ukraine, the Red See, and Middle East. You're welcome...

God, are you guys really still spouting that BS? Europe does not look at the US as a beacon of civilisation and democracy. US politics have devolved into nothing but cynical powergames for quite a while now, while so many domestic issues remain unresolved. Rural America and a lot of old industrial towns are crumbling and it's become plain to see. Still, you're a powerful ally, and we do worry about the consequences of having more madmen with selfish and poor intentions lead your country. I don't particularly value Biden as a good continued option for president, but Trump is a genuine disaster. I sincerly hope you guys can somehow get out of this rediculous polemic gerontocracy. Hallo from Europe, yes I can confirm. We just had our own elections, here in the Netherlands. And yes. I am not interested, since the effect on my life will be negligible, something like whether or not it have to pay 0,5% more in taxes. But the US presidential elections and the Trump trial, I follow daily. I can indeed recite the names of all the judges, the DAs, the witnesses, the verdicts, the MAGA idiots in the house and so on. I am by now more knowledgeable than the average American, I am sure. Why? Because the outcome of YOUR presidential election will determine whether MY country will be able to go on to live in peace and prosperity, or whether we will all be betrayed and handed over to Putin in the midst of a brutal war. And yes, we have populist movements too, they got a big election-victory too in my country. The big difference though to the US is that we do not pretent to be a superpower, whatever happens in my country has negligible impact on the rest of the world and most importantly they will have to form a coalition government with 3 other parties which has already watered down their political program to a great extent. I am always flabbergasted by Americans who apparently believe they live on a island and non of what they do has any consequences. That might have seem that way for a long time, you were followed because you were worthy of being followed. When you elect Trump for a second term, everything is definitely in shambles and nobody will trust America ever again. America Great = America Alone.

An Australian perspective: the US has always been heavily predisposed to authoritarianism. You were late to WWII because you couldn't agree which side to join until Japan decided it for you. The Allies in Europe were fighting AGAINST US technology, intelligence, and supplies as many Americans were profiting from supplying Germany and Italy. There were many influential Americans who wanted the US to join the Germans. Politically engaged Aussies are also highly concerned by the idea of a second trump term. His influence was destabilising to our economy, and leaves us more vulnerable to attack (from China rather than Russia, which is even worse). And that was before his arrogant and deadly obstruction to dealing with covid plunged us into shutdowns and corporate extorsion.

The last bit, where Alex compares a second Trump presidency to Orban, Meloni, Le Pen is ridiculous. First, Le Pen has never been president of France. Second, Meloni has is not pro-Russian, anti-NATO, or anti-liberal democracy or anything of the sort. That leaves Orban, who is indeed most like Trump: autocratic, anti-freedom, pro-Russian, anti-NATO. The difference is that Hungary is a small, poor country that is highly dependent of EU funding, so Orban generally folds in exchange for a small bribe. The USA, on the other hand, is a massive, rich country that makes or breaks NATO. And that, rather than the mistaken belief that the USA is a aging city on a hill - most Europeans have long known it is not - is the reason why Europeans are worried. The upside of all of this, though, is that we will finally see European countries break free of their dependence on the USA, turning the EU into the shining city on a hill while the USA descends into anger and chaos.

I wonder if you know anything about NATO and how it works, but I'd be happy to explain a few things. For starters: it's not a Golf resort that will kick out members who haven't paid a membership fee (because there is none). And members are allies, not club members, and therefore not open to extortion. Will I be hearing from you?

Europe will have to strengthen their own nuclear deterrent if Trump wins in America. I think Japan, Australia, South Korea and other countries in South East Asia will also seek nuclear weapons to defend themselves.

Republicans can only lie because the truth is too bad. In Europe old statements are shown by Repblikeinen with what they say now is completely the opposite of what they said then. Were they lying now or then? Most of Trump's election staff are convicted criminals. We in Europe know more than most of the Trump supporters. Major international banks will not lend Trump a cent because he is a conman and his supporters think Trump is an honest businessman. Are Trump's supporters crazy or is the rest of the world crazy
