I loved this movie when it came out. It's so surreal and visceral yet at the same time almost mundane and wooden. Love all the actors in it. My brother introduced it to me with 'The Matrix' comparison, but that didn't seem apt at all to me. In 'The Matrix' there is a clearly defined 'Real World' and a clearly defined 'Virtual World' with specific rules, in 'eXistenZ' we are never told what is 'Real', and the virtual worlds are layered on top of each other in a psychosis inducing unreality. I love the way no one in the church reacts to the shooting, and then after the Asian man asks to be told, "Are we still in the game?" despite the characters faces not changing expression in the last shot I feel like their guns begin to waver unsteadily in a manner that suggests the characters have no idea. I thought the characters feeling unsettled by not being able to answer that question was the point of the film. Perceptual relativity taken to the point of insanity, 'Plato's Cave' except the shadows on the wall are indistinguishable from the world outside 'The Cave'. In the end it's left purposely ambiguous if that was the 'Real World' because they and we the viewer can't tell anymore. Also everyone in the end scene seems to be filling out their surveys on modern style touch-screen tablets.

I got to work on this one when it was shot in Toronto back in the late 90s. Very surreal, and I couldn't tell what the Hell it was about while shooting. It's basically a 'lost' film that's never really talked about when Cronenberg is discussed. I'll have to watch it again as I didn't think much of it at the time.

@cartooncritique66255 жыл бұрын
Slightly unrelated I know, but I find myself asking similar questions regarding the current trend in Hollywood of making "realistic" adaptations of previously animated shows and movies, video games, and comic books. Why take something that was originally fantastic and surreal both in appearance AND concept, and make it mundane? If I was going to live inside a VR World, I'd want to be like Macaulay Culkin in "Pagemaster". "Get Animated or Get The Fuck Out!" is my personal motto.

@WinnieTheGrizzly Personally, I don't care if it's fake or not. It's fun. THAT is what I want. I want a game like VR Chat with like, rpg and fps stuff as well. Like, a community where you can spend time meeting people before going on quests, and there could quest lines on both sides.

I think just to break the brains of people who like to think about reality and such. Which level are we actually at. I hate it. Really I love it. But I hate it
@XxTaiMTxX5 жыл бұрын
Because that's what artists do. We create worlds. What is the point of fighting a Dragon other than you did it? If there was no challenge or merit to doing so, there is no reason to slay it. What is the point of dating a hot demon chick if there was no struggle to attain it? You create a world where challenges are easy or have no purpose, the audience loses interest. If you create a world where you can date whatever kind of person you want without working for it... well then it's just a five minute masturbatory session you only come back to in order to masturbate. Real life is struggle. Winning. Losing. Overcoming obstacles. Failing to overcome obstacles. Working for the things you have so that you value having them more. What is the value in playing a VR game in which you can get everything you want? The novelty of it would wear off quickly. You'd desensitize yourself to it. The most interesting thing an artist can do is convince their audience that what they've made is real. The world I've built for you is real. It moves along with or without you. Things happen there even if you don't read about it. Even if you don't experience it yourself. If you don't take the quest to kill 50 rats, someone else does. If true VR were to ever actually happen... That's what the end result would be. Artists creating worlds for their audiences to get lost in. But, right now, the most we can manage is an immersive experience with a controller in hand.

Dick wrote the novel ''The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch'' and in it two competing drugs vye for the market, ''Can-D'' and ''Chew-Z''. Just thinking about it as I type, was Dick attempting to describe VR back in the 60's? The technology wasn't there but the drugs were. In his novel the drugs were for use by conscripted Martian colonists to escape their humdrum lives.

Thank you for your discussion on this movie! I do not think it gets enough discussion. I find it a part of Videodrome like Hot Fuzz is part of a "trilogy". Both films also have themes that seem prophetic later! A LOT is going on in this movie, and I love how much time and care was taken. I do wish more was done, but maybe he was rushed a bit, and Chronisms seem a bit on the nose "plugged in". Still, a lot got in. Might I suggest "The Thirteenth Floor"

I have to check the catalog now to see if he did the Thirteenth Floor and Strange Days. I'm pretty sure he covered Dark City. they all kind of came out at the same time and with the same sort of flavor/theme. (maybe less so with Strange Days, but it was a lot more interesting than most give a thought to.)
@deusdeaconReviews2 жыл бұрын
I haven't done either of those films, but strange days is on the list
@SerifSansSerif2 жыл бұрын
@@deusdeaconReviews Strange Days put me off with its opening scene that seemed like somehow I got porn by mistake (remember, those were still the days of VHS). I was surprised to catch it years later on TV, and was really taken aback by it. Though it doesn't have VR in it, the concept of living other people's memories hits upon the "player character" moments in this film, as well as those in Dark City. The thirteenth floor I definitely feel got more comparisons at the time to the matrix than existenz. It's hard to talk about it without revealing much of the mystery involved, but it was unique in how much more realistic it touches upon concepts of simulated realities (and in a way that gets discussed today), as well as it having far less fantastical scifi elements. It drags a bit but it's a decent film for what its got in it. For a movie i felt was lackuster at the time I viewed it, it's one that sticks in the back of my mind, which, to me at least, is a sign that it has something more to it. If you haven't seen it, i'd say give it a watch at least.

You know, I like the title even more now that I know the deeper meaning of it and it's spelling/capitalization. I originally assumed it was just a strange punctuation and was meant to be similar to the word, "Existence," as though the title itself is suggesting a blur between reality and the VR game's world, albeit in a blunt force trauma kind of way. I much prefer the actual reason, as it seems more subtle to me, making the questioning of whether or not one is in a supposed reality or in VR slightly more valid from the film's narrative standpoint. One detail I really liked was that the game world and reality were both seemingly blended in some fashion, and did so in ways I thought made the game and reality both seem more akin to a video game prototype, or beta if you will to use certain terminology. A great example of this to me is that certain details like, "The Country Store," and a person being called, "Gas," as opposed to an actual being's name make it seem like an early test of an unfinished game, so something like a location or even an NPC that the player shares interaction with as a placeholder, names for locations and NPCs being added at a later stage, an error to be corrected. In that sense, it makes both reality and the game itself in this film seem slightly more blurred to me, that is had they gone with the prototype angle. I haven't seen this film outside of various reviews and critical analyses of it, so if they did consider it a prototype of sorts, that would've been to its credit in my opinion. I think an eagerness to test it by it's creator in order to make improvements, only to become lost in the supposed realism of her own creation would've been an interesting addition, even though it seems it wouldn't be necessary to add such an element, as this movie seems really intriguing as it stands.
@andrejaeckle98285 жыл бұрын
"Existenz" isn't just meant to be similar to "existence", it's the German word for it. No need to overthink it that much, really.
@loneronin68135 жыл бұрын
@@andrejaeckle9828 Yeah my initial assumption was way off, as evidenced by the video explaining it, which is what I was trying to point out that my original assumption of a correlation was entirely wrong. I legit saw this movie when I was a kid. I did not even known it was a movie, I thought it was some mini thing from some sci fi show thing. Personally I think back then the idea of an "open world" was a bit to odd for people to think would be catchy, so a lot of the times when their is a game theme, either in a movie or show or what ever, they always had to make it have an ending. I mean granted now its not as bad, but it still is there. I feel the ending was in reality, mainly cause of the guy wondering if they were still in the game. Like showing us that the two main characters were fighting against the possibility that people will mix reality with virtual reality and end up hurting themselves or others. What I do not get us how the two key factors the game pod and the gun seems to be an amalgam. The gun, being made up of bones to make a weapon, and the pod itself made up into a singular creature. The pod itself makes me think its a bit more like a parasite, it leeches off you, in a sense using you as a power source while also being a part of the person, while feeding into the brain a new world. Just a lot of things to look into
