It's crazy that EXO was considered, at first, to be SM's first flop group. Growl was actually their breakout hit. Mama, (Your Highness/Majesty) was actually the song that introduced me to EXO and I fell in love with it and the group from the start. Look up the lyrics as they hit hard, especially nowadays. Forestella actually did a great cover of Mama on Immortal Songs. Not many can cover a track like Mama Tempo, all I can say is, WOW! The Acapella!! As for Obsession?.. Caliente!!! I believe they were the group to start 3rd gen in KPop, as well as first in having intricate backstory lore, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Their predebut song What is Love, with just Baekhyun and D.O singing is a good, old school, r&b track. I would have had it on replay back in 2011 if I knew about EXO. I only discovered them close to 5 yrs ago. The funny thing about Tempo is that if you focus your attention on the cube (red force)you could se hands and 9 people there, the theory is that the ones singing are the other version of EXO (clones of them, X-EXO) that’s why close to the ends you see them glitching (except for KyungSoo) and why ChanYeol eyes are blue (the machine commit some errors while cloning them, like the blue eyes of ChanYeol and the glitching) In Obsession we see both of them but for some reason after being in the cube they lost their powers while X-EXO (red force) has them, in this one the theory come that Chen (the one in the security room and with the chess) is actually playing chess with his counterpart (red suit), they’re the one choosing how the fight goes between both sides EXO vs X-EXO, here, EXO lost (that’s why they snapped their heads at the end) and the world burning is an indication of this universe being lost (EXO and the red force tend to appear as different characters in different universes, for example (in their song Wolf-wolves) (Love me right- football players) The red force has been seen as a robot (power mv) cube (tempo) androids (Lucky one). Their lore is really extensive and good, this would make you understand the videos even more, like the butterfly that you see in MAMA (is exol- the fandom name)

Well, EXO is the very first K-Pop group to debut complete with a concept and backstory. All their MVs and concert VCRs, including members' solo works, are interwoven into their lore. The public was not prepared for MAMA when it came out. It was so different from run-of-the-mill K-Pop songs. EXO was thought to be SM Entertainment's biggest mistake at that time. Yet look at them today! This is their 12th year in the entertainment industry, but EXO is still going strong! Many younger K-Pop idols look up to EXO as their role models and their inspiration to want to become an idol.

You should do "Cream Soda" which is the newest song. We been told they will have comeback this year again with six member cause Kai and Sehun are in the military now. In Obsession the 3 member missing are Lay (in China) and D.O & Xiumin that were indeed in the military. In Cream Soda (and in the album "exist") Kai sing but it wasn't part of the MV, they had other 2 pre-releases for the album "Let me in" & "Hear me out" were Kai was present though. Lay last participation was in the special album "Don't fight the feeling" that came out after obsession just before Chanyeol and Baekhyun had to join the military, while Suho and Chen were already doing their service and just after D.O and Xiumin were finished theirs. It was during cvid era so Lay's parts were film in China and cgi on the mv. The album has only 5 songs but Lay has some lines in each song. "Jekyll" is a B-side from obsession album that fit the concept of obsession but is very different at the same time. EXO was the first kpop group to have a lore. They are aliens with superpowers that came to earth to protect us and defend us from the evil of the red forces that try to destroy the tree of life and get EXO'S superpowers. In 2012 EXO was considered the 3rd best group. Heat year in January B.A.P debuted and they were considered the rookie monsters, EXO kind of compiled for second place with Vixx who debuted in May (EXO debuted in April) the other best group was BtoB who debuted just some days before EXO. Now all 4 groups have great vocalist but B.A.P had a very strong hip-hop base and amazing rappers and back then that was the preferable sound. After Mama, EXO went in hiatus for a year and returned with wolf that gave then their first win (very unique song roo) and then they did the repackage album with Growl that lunch them to stardom. I totally recommend each of those 2012 groups. B.A.P has movie like mvs (Skydive, One shot, their debut Warrior) Vixx are concept Kings, each mv is a masterpiece (Shangri-la, Fantasy, Scentist they are aesthetically pleasing) BtoB are vocal princes, they are great and super cute, they have the most respectful and beautiful relationship with their fans, I wish my fellow EXO-L were a bit more like Melodies cause they are so kind. For fans in Korea in 2012, this style would not have been out of nowhere. This song falls into an SM tradition called SMP (short for SM Performance). These are epic sounding songs with heavy beats, intense choreo and lyrics that focus on social commentary (which MAMA definitely does, MAMA means "your majesty" in case you hadn't heard yet). So earlier SM groups had songs that weren't exactly like this but similar (and often from the same producer Yoo Young-Jin) and fans would have known exactly what they were going for. (For other classic examples of this kind of early sound from SM groups, check out Warrior's Descent by H.O.T. and Rising Sun by TVXQ.) The boys did indeed record all the layers for the acapella section of Tempo themselves, it wasn't originally planned that way from what I remember. It came from them playing around in the studio so they went with it. EXO has incredible variety and range in their discography, you aint seen nothin yet :)

I found exo in 2023, obsession is one of the reasons i got into exo. Present groups surely have the hard and heavy beats(which is more noisy rather rythmic) but i wont lie what impressed me most about exo is their melodious vocals and not unneccessary noisy beats as most of the kpop groups doing it. SM really understands music diversity and experimentation and specially Exo's music is really different. It has rythm, R&B it has funk, pop, hiphop. And really goes well wih vocals and Rapping style. Their rappers dont rap in usual one tone or agressive sttles all the time. Rather Make the whole vibe of the song. I will suggest let me in, sweet lies, Playboy articial love type songs too. Exist and Obsession albums are a must to checkout

I'm falling in love with EXO because of the MAMA song. It's like a choir song 😂. You can get hints on it especially with the water in the mirror wiping to show a different memeber, or when they show the different worlds with the pheonix flying into the other world, whilst the dragon flys into their world. But coming from one of the Big 3 companies they were not spared of commentaries like its just bec they had a grand debut compared to other struggling groups they can be popular.. as if they didnt work hard as much as others which is just non sense. MAMA lyrics was insane for both versions. If not mistaken, I was crazy for EXO-M back then. As a Chinese who understands mandarin, I feel more touched and closer to them. "MaMa" You have to read the lyrics, it adapts more to today than to when it came out, it talks about how the world has changed and we don't communicate with each other only through zeros and ones and we generate necessary struggles and hatred (social networks) and they ask "Mama" which means her majesty (as something superior) in Korean to help them change the things that happen...

I was excited and then they dropped Mama and I loved it except I couldn't listen to the whole song without shitting my pants at Kai's part. It terrified me. Tempo is by far, my favorite. I love the accapello !!!! Obsession is them fighting against their clones from the red force. Two of the members are in the military while this song came out. That is why the fans voted for them to sing this song when they hold their concert coming up. Kia is in the military, that is why he wasn't in killing voice.

In obsession we are presented to exo-x, who's the bad version of exo, who's causing all the trouble, as you can see in tempo and obsession has much of red, and thats makes sense,red representes the red force,the master villain in exo Lore, who's also represented as a glass cube (in tempo you can see two members playing chess with transparent pieces, they're planning the war), and in the end someone appear holding a cube with a red background.

MAMA wasn't very popular when it first came out, it even had people saying that EXO was SMs first flop group because everyone thought the song and their group concept was weird (especially with the EXO-K and EXO-M units they had when they debuted) EXO didn't actually get popular until they released their song Growl which became super popular in South Korea (I will say though that it's one of my favorite k-pop songs i've heard and was one of the first few songs i heard from them)

EXO in total are just 9 members since the departure of 3 previous Chinese members. 8 Korean and one chinese. There were only six members remaining during Obsession MV since the other two were serving in military service and Lay, the only remaining Chinese member, is still in China and could not take part in the MV due to some political conflicts between South Korea and China and he is a honorable member of the Youth Party. After Obsession MV, EXO took about a year-long hiatus until returning in 2021 with the new album "Don't Fight the Feeling." There are just 7 members during this comeback, which includes the two previous members who have already complete their military service. The other two members who participated in the last Obsession MV could not participate in the comebacks because they enlisted in the military services. Luckily, Lay made an appearance in the MV even though he could not participate physically during behind the scenes with the other korean members.

haven't finish watching but i find it funny how yt reactors always say things like it's so 2012 when it is 2012 song or like it's so 2017 or whatever year when it's a song of that year like that's some legit fact because when i see the styles in MAMA, like the haircut etc...i remember seeing these styles even in 2008 or even 2005...at least in kpop...so idk what's so 2012 abt this...makes me think back of my favs' style/sound from those early 2nd gen...and think man, they must be really futuristic/advanced then. lol. and if you think Mama was so unique you need to dive into 1st-early 2nd gen sm boygroups because you're in for a surprise...i never thought that until i see a reactor saying Mama remind them of Shinhwa...and i thought...i didn't see it and rhought back of Shinhwa's earlier career when they're still in earlier years(and still in sm) and thought oh yeah now i see it. and i think dbsk too had songs with such vibe ..who knows, maybe H.O.T too? idk...i'm just a Shinhwa fan tbh...so yeah...but if i remember correctly, Mama wasn't the biggest hit afterall since it's not the most public friendly sound, but it's sm group, it won't be completely flop either...since big agencies come with premade mega fandoms afterall. but in Exo early days their biggest competitor was definitely BAP...neither a fan of both but i remember their popularity.

Fun fact! their producers were Americans. Love your technical reviews as producers. Watch out! you'll be in a rabbit hole really soon.. You'll become EXOL like I am. Obsession era 2 were in the military and 1 went back to China. Korea and China weren't really very friendly at that time... Mama was almost flopped and got picked up went big after Growl. Coz Mama was technically the debut song then they released Growl and everything went big. the rest is history.
