You can block obd2 access AND make it hard for the end user to find the vin. Plus, newer "blockers" will simply shave off 40% of the miles on the odometer. Who would report that if they are charged per mile, and would pay more for the error, and just say "ehhh, i guess i get it cheaper. sucks to be the rental company!" I really wish they would have simply used a dedicated line for mileage/tracking besides canbus (afaik they use canbus, but i could be wrong)

Hmmmm...this is interesting. Back in like November. Someone near my town was selling a white on red 2016 Acura NSX that had about about 2k miles for $125k. A friend of mine said he'd seen that car at his gym all the time and knew who it belonged to because of the license plate frame. It's been wrapped a bunch of different colors and said he highly doubts that car has 2k miles because the owner would talk about tracking it all the time and would constantly be wrapping it and modding it.

You are 100 percent correct. I use to manage a 150 car fleet for a local Lincoln / Mercury dealer here in Tampa. We would buy the cars new under floorplan then pay depreciation on each car each month to ford motor credit. Once a car hit 10k miles we really had to watch the miles. Cars would loose 3 to 4 grand at 10k mark. We would turn the fleet about twice a year. Just like you do. From Halloween to Valentine's time would be slow. We would run about 135 cars. Still had service loaner cars and ins rentals for the body shop. 1994 we had a Mark 8 in the fleet. The mileage stopped. The car was down for a month. Parts were not available at the time. Then all the paperwork to disclose the odometer. We lost our butts at the auction. New the car was 32k sticker. Sold for 18k on a red light at auction. Even though it was warranty job. We ( the dealer) still took a hit. Love your videos. Brings back alot if day to day memories.

I'm a Mercedes-Benz Tech and we have seen odometer blockers installed. We check all cars before they are traded in now. If you connect the Xentry and check the odometer reading actual value in the instrument cluster the miles/km will show up as "-----" and thats how you know a blocker is installed without actually taking it apart or driving the car. ( some blockers only register 1 out of every 6 miles driven, there are a few options available)

But since he knows it's going on, let others collect some evidence, put the scumbags on notice and maybe enjoy some perp walks. Let the Feds do the legwork and get convictions. This cleans up the industry, weeds out the jerks and insulates him from libel exposure. Win-win-win.

There's a rental company here in Iceland that got caught rolling down kilometres on their cars. Used a loophole in the system. When you buy a new car here, it doesn't have to get inspected until after four years. So they'd buy new cars, rent them for 2-3 years which would easily get you past 100k km, and then roll'em back and sell for top money with 30-40k km on the odometer. Then people down the line were getting snapped timing belts in a 3 year old vehicle way before the indicated mileage to change the belts, and once the fraud was uncovered, all cars that this company used to own lost the manufacturers warranty. And the worst part about this... nobody got arrested the rental company still operates to this day.

This goes deeper in the used car market. I wonder if that odometer blocker also blocks the ECU mileage record as they both keep track but separately. My theory never trust a low mileage older car only less you buying it from some old person but even then you never know. I think the odometer would be the only part I would support where if it breaks and you replace it it needs to be re programmed at the dealer if they start making them encrypted. Last time I read about it you can literally read the chips on a odometer in binary numbers and change the mileage back using a hex editor software. They should have this all encrypted and the vin is also encrypted in the odometer/ECU to make sure it wasn't switched out with a low mileage wrecked car. They leave it open to be manipulated.

I believe that in the UK, it is not illegal to alter a car’s odometer but it is illegal to offer a car for sale commercially when the odometer has been altered. This allows mileage alteration services to operate legally but puts all the responsibility on the dealer who then unwittingly buys a car with an altered odometer reading for resale. This is one of the reasons I got out of the trade, unless you know the vehicles owners from new, there is no way that you can trust the recorded mileage 100 percent.

Rob: I don't have the guts to identify the company I'm talking about or myself. $5k isn't worth the risk involved because this involves a lot of people -- many of whom are well-connected. With that said, there is a company right under your nose that's doing this on a grand scale never before seen. Here's how to catch them in the act: 1. Make a list of the top five rental companies you can think of. It's one of these. Trust me on this. 2. Rent an exotic from them and write down the VIN and mileage. I don't think it matters which vehicle you choose but your odds might be slightly better if you choose something higher value and/or closer to retirement. 3. Wait for the vehicles retirement. Be patient. 4. When it's retired, look at where it's being sold. It's going to be a dealership you've probably never heard of. You may already see your first clue... the mileage will be significantly lower. Don't get distracted if it isn't though. 5. Identify the owners of the dealership and the owners of the rental company. 6. Connect the dots. Research the other cars being sold. Prepare to be blown away. I'm being 100% serious here. This is not some melodramatic attention-whore comment.

A dealership in New Jersey, my sister friend left his car to get serviced, they gave him a loaner car and the Odometer doesn’t work, the trip reads 0 no matter what

The fact that he put vinyl under the letters to make them easier to remove makes me suspect the plan all the long was to get you to pay to 'fix' it.

You can control these mileage blockers with a combination of button presses on the steering wheel. For example on Mercedes you press and hold down the return key on the wheel when you turn on the ignition. I checked this when I bought my car incase the previous owner installed one of these devices.

There are many modules which record the mileage data separately from the odometer and you can check if it’s been tampered with OBD tool.

How many people, when buying a low mileage car, actually have that hooked up to verify the mileage? I know they should, but how many do?

you can move the logo to the right and tilt it up or down across the sign if anything.

Once again, when buying such car used take an obd2 reader with you that can scan milage. It is recorded by multiple different systems, I doubt all of them are disabled by the blocker

Quick question. I'm not a mechanic I'm just a guy in his bedroom at 5am. If the car comes out of the factory with let's say 19 inch rims and low profile tiers. And they put on 21 inch wheels aftermarket. Can they in theory go more miles than the odometer picks up?

Its actually a very fun deal. We get free rentals in the end, and $5000. Just make sure you wait a few weeks make sure the car goes out again before you rat them out, so they won't know who did it.

I really like this idea man!! U have been following to rules for so long and just seeing more and more companies jump loops to make an extra buck. You are such a nice guy man. Keep it up! I wish I rented cars. Cuz I'm about to go do this in Phoenix AZ. Lol

With my experience in the field of databases... I wish I could work out agreements to help investigate this kind of stuff with dealerships, oil change companies, etc.... It would be soooo easy to uncover things unbeknownst to these companies.

Thats called T.M.U. True mileage unknown. If they are doing this, they are doing other things also. I agree with what your saying. Nothing good comes from this. Once a thief , always a thief. Remember back in the day before internet. You could take a drill.and rollback the odometer. Several new car dealership got caught back in the day.

Yes that is true. Every rental contract would have the same miles on it and would be very hard to explain. I don't really see why anybody would do this as the depreciation is tax deductible.
@BigNameJamesStuff

@@mexicanspec You would just lie and claim "fake" miles for the depreciation. People who would lie about miles one way would have no problem doing it another.

if i rented a car with a odometer block i would notice it instantly. I would assume that a large portion of the renters of these cars would notice it too. The car that got its tires changed was maybe because of drifting or donuts. It makes far more sense. Im not saying rental companies dont temper with their car, but i would asume they roll the meter back rather than blocking the odometer
