You are 100 percent correct. I use to manage a 150 car fleet for a local Lincoln / Mercury dealer here in Tampa. We would buy the cars new under floorplan then pay depreciation on each car each month to ford motor credit. Once a car hit 10k miles we really had to watch the miles. Cars would loose 3 to 4 grand at 10k mark. We would turn the fleet about twice a year. Just like you do. From Halloween to Valentine's time would be slow. We would run about 135 cars. Still had service loaner cars and ins rentals for the body shop. 1994 we had a Mark 8 in the fleet. The mileage stopped. The car was down for a month. Parts were not available at the time. Then all the paperwork to disclose the odometer. We lost our butts at the auction. New the car was 32k sticker. Sold for 18k on a red light at auction. Even though it was warranty job. We ( the dealer) still took a hit. Love your videos. Brings back alot if day to day memories.

There's a rental company here in Iceland that got caught rolling down kilometres on their cars. Used a loophole in the system. When you buy a new car here, it doesn't have to get inspected until after four years. So they'd buy new cars, rent them for 2-3 years which would easily get you past 100k km, and then roll'em back and sell for top money with 30-40k km on the odometer. Then people down the line were getting snapped timing belts in a 3 year old vehicle way before the indicated mileage to change the belts, and once the fraud was uncovered, all cars that this company used to own lost the manufacturers warranty. And the worst part about this... nobody got arrested the rental company still operates to this day.

This goes deeper in the used car market. I wonder if that odometer blocker also blocks the ECU mileage record as they both keep track but separately. My theory never trust a low mileage older car only less you buying it from some old person but even then you never know. I think the odometer would be the only part I would support where if it breaks and you replace it it needs to be re programmed at the dealer if they start making them encrypted. Last time I read about it you can literally read the chips on a odometer in binary numbers and change the mileage back using a hex editor software. They should have this all encrypted and the vin is also encrypted in the odometer/ECU to make sure it wasn't switched out with a low mileage wrecked car. They leave it open to be manipulated.

I believe that in the UK, it is not illegal to alter a car’s odometer but it is illegal to offer a car for sale commercially when the odometer has been altered. This allows mileage alteration services to operate legally but puts all the responsibility on the dealer who then unwittingly buys a car with an altered odometer reading for resale. This is one of the reasons I got out of the trade, unless you know the vehicles owners from new, there is no way that you can trust the recorded mileage 100 percent.

Rob: I don't have the guts to identify the company I'm talking about or myself. $5k isn't worth the risk involved because this involves a lot of people -- many of whom are well-connected. With that said, there is a company right under your nose that's doing this on a grand scale never before seen. Here's how to catch them in the act: 1. Make a list of the top five rental companies you can think of. It's one of these. Trust me on this. 2. Rent an exotic from them and write down the VIN and mileage. I don't think it matters which vehicle you choose but your odds might be slightly better if you choose something higher value and/or closer to retirement. 3. Wait for the vehicles retirement. Be patient. 4. When it's retired, look at where it's being sold. It's going to be a dealership you've probably never heard of. You may already see your first clue... the mileage will be significantly lower. Don't get distracted if it isn't though. 5. Identify the owners of the dealership and the owners of the rental company. 6. Connect the dots. Research the other cars being sold. Prepare to be blown away. I'm being 100% serious here. This is not some melodramatic attention-whore comment.

Yes that is true. Every rental contract would have the same miles on it and would be very hard to explain. I don't really see why anybody would do this as the depreciation is tax deductible.

@@mexicanspec You would just lie and claim "fake" miles for the depreciation. People who would lie about miles one way would have no problem doing it another.

if i rented a car with a odometer block i would notice it instantly. I would assume that a large portion of the renters of these cars would notice it too. The car that got its tires changed was maybe because of drifting or donuts. It makes far more sense. Im not saying rental companies dont temper with their car, but i would asume they roll the meter back rather than blocking the odometer
