I initially watched one of their other videos and thought Tony was even Ghanaian until he opened his mouth. Dude, you'll pass for a Ghanaian any time; you really really look Ghanaian and also look like Emit Smith at the same time. And Ayo and the kids.... what a lovely family. Bank of America has a partnership with Barclays Bank , Ghana commercial bank. You can also use Remitly money transfer and Boss money transfer by downloading those apps which you can use to send money to yourself and receive it at any bank. If you live in Atlanta, Ny, Nj and other cities, find Ghanaian shipping agents who can Shipp all your stuff for you. You can pay for the clearing cost to the agent in USA or you can go to the harbor yourself when the stuff gets to Ghana and pay the harbor charges to the shippers agent. But I highly recommend you pay shipping and port clearing fees to the agent in USA.

Its a big mistake to go abroad and try to replicate your life and comforts there. You might as well stay home. Absorb how the locals live. Africa has upper class well healed society too as well as middle class. Observe them if thats your level and you will get an idea of where and how to live based on your budget. But carrying toys etc from USA? Why? Let your kids go and play mix and mingle with locals so they learn the language and culture and hopefully put away tablet and game box !
@ExpatLifeGhana4 жыл бұрын
You've got that right @zev love! If you're going to go to Ghana, live that Ghanaian life!! When we were last there, all my kids could bring were a couple of small toys and a game. They ended up leaving them all with kids they met and had the most fun just playing. Still, as part of the transition, most kids will feel better and transition easier with a few items from home. Still, I love the point of what you are saying. Live that Ghana life, learn the language, and join the community... do NOT try to replicate an American life in Ghana (what's the point). Thanks for commenting ❤️️🇬🇭❤️️!

Start with a small ex japanese car import till you get your cashflow right...over the years those storage costs add up..$300 a month after five years is $18,000 spent on storage. I say do garage sale and put everything on ebay ...store a few heirlooms with family..and give away as much as u can. What you save on storage u can buy in Ghana, and use relocation as an opportunity to declutter your life and be minimalist.

@Zev love - We actually lost most everything in Hurricane Harvey (over 4 ft of water in our one story house)... so we've already been forced into minimalism, lol. Wow!!! This was a super detailed and organized presentation! I bet a lot of people are feeling overwhelmed after watching this lol😋. Loved the transitions/intros from your kids. Too cute! Just wanted to say that now people can appreciate how much Africans plan and contribute financially to the American economy when we migrate to the US/Canada/Europe. It's a big sacrifice. It's interesting to see the reverse experience with you. Serious question though: what happens if the borders are closed until October /November since you quit your jobs? Just worried that you guys are in limbo.
@ExpatLifeGhana4 жыл бұрын
Awww... @Vacuum Guys thanks for the compliment! We were trying to be thoughtful when presenting and keep it real about how much you need to budget for this so you don't get stressed or feel regret. We have literally been saving for this for YEARS and trimming our cost of living and expenses. The biggest hit now is the new forced quarantine. I hope that we are able to move sooner rather than later, but if this drags on into October or November 😢 we will just have to adjust, pick up some work, and keep the goal in mind. As an aside, the sacrifice and grit you need to move from Africa to the West is real! As an immigrant's kid, it is humbling to have seen my family's journey from nothing to something. It's a struggle and I cannot understate that. I had never thought about how this was a new perspective of going the other way... kind of like I'm reliving my dad's journey. I love that idea! Sell everything and save the storage fees ($2,880 - $3,600 a year) that tend to go up annually. Clothes, shoes, household goods can be replaced when you return --this will be one less headache to think about... Sell the vehicle and buy new when you get there.... For instance the drum you guys paid almost 800bucks would be almost 300bucks and weight is not a big deal with the door to door shipping agents. Typically, depending on the country, the duties and customs fee expires after X years (Dips import duty-free vehicles) and the POVs are in good shape. Also, don't forget about Embassy vehicle auctions; inexpensive but...you might find a gem.

Duties on cars depend on the engine capacity. Anything above 2.4 lit. attracts extra charge so most of the vehicles are around 2.0 lit. Kia and Hyundai SUV diesel are 1.9 lits. If you guys are looking at shipping a car, it is well-known that the cars in Texas are pretty much rust-proof. Humidity is high in Ghana as you well know, so things do rust quickly. You may want to upgrade struts, knowing how the roads are in Ghana. Look at SafeBondAfrica, Portside, AutoMasters (vehicle duty calculator), West Coast shipping websites. Best Used Cars to Buy If You Live in a Tropical Climate - www.yourmechanic.com/article/the-best-used-cars-to-buy-if-you-live-in-a-tropical-climate (2015 article but may still apply) Check the classifieds section of the Accra Expat website for diplomats leaving town and offloading their cars. Some of them have duty already paid and they service their cars at Mechanical Lloyd, Toyota, etc. So you will have records. Some of the cars are customized for the tropics. Do your price comparisons with shipping a car of your own from the US. Depending on how soon they are leaving town, you have room to haggle prices down. Look into TravelJohn products. Quality hardware tools are a must if you are tinkerers. Obviously, your electronics should work on 240V or you purchase a step up transformer. You guys have already spent enough time over there, so this information you are already aware of. In the long run, I'm sure someone will set up a shop to cater to Americans in GH. There are daily flights to GH from the USA, so just getting an agreement with Delta to ship these stuff on a daily/weekly basis is a possibility. The turnover just has to be enough to be worth it. As the numbers increase, these gaps will be filled. Note: Blue Skies ships their fresh fruit in the cargo hold of commercial flights heading to Europe every evening and the product is on hotel menus, shop shelves the next morning in the UK and other parts of Europe. The British investor said their turnover was $120 million/year. The interview is on KZbin. The following farms will sort you out if you are in the Greater Accra area: Hendy Farms, Malom Foods. They have Instagram pages, Google should sort you out when you run a search.

Thank you for this most valuable information. The import duty tax is extremely high for a place whose manufacturing capabilities are underdeveloped. Bottom line... It's robbery. I'll keep my 25k in my pocket. I love the idea of repatriating to the continent but not being taken advantage of.
@ExpatLifeGhana4 жыл бұрын
Yeah @Fabian... listen, if you want to bring your American Life to Ghana... it is gonna cost you, big time. BUT, if you are able to live a Ghana life and leave most of your stuff behind, you can skip all the import taxation and enjoy Ghana (without extortion). Thanks for the ❤️️ on this video, we appreciate it 👍😊

Have y’all heard of Atlantic Shipping co.? I don’t know where you’re shipping from in the USA but the shipping company I just mentioned ships from Fall River, MA straight across the Atlantic Ocean to Cape Verde. Maybe a connector ship could be used from Cape Verde to the other countries in West Africa? Could this suggestion be an alternative and more cost effective?

Also..you can send essentials through Ghanaian shipping companies that cost approximately $200 per barrel or Uhaul wardrobe size box..They ship it straight to your doorstep in Ghana...Just like how FedEx or UPS does it here...$200 ONLY...Nothing more...Your budget is way too expensive..Your barrel prices is ridiculously too high...Search for Ghanaian shipping agents here...Talk to Ghanaians please..

Great video. Very thorough. You really need to have someone dependable to help you on the U.S. side. I'd do it, if I didn't have to do everything myself. You all answered all the questions I had asked in another video. I don't understand the need for a VISA and a passport. Everything cost, so if you have enough loot, you can move.

Taxi drivers are not like the ones in the US! I’ve found many of them rely on the customer for directions. Do not come to Ghana expecting to hop an Uber and just be dropped off where you ask. Make maps for yourself where you frequent or are staying notating streets and landmarks. Also, ask the locals for the street names and area names as they are sometimes different from what’s on Google maps.
@ExpatLifeGhana3 жыл бұрын
@etty hill - In Tema some streets don't really have names so it is even crazier there and thanks for the comment 😊!

I will advise you use shipping agents who will pick your items from the USA and deliver your items at your door steps in Ghana they are called door to door shipping this is cheaper because they handle the duties for you.this is how ship stuff to Ghana 🇬🇭

. I was recently in Ghana during the week of Independence Day 2022 I instantly fell in love so much so that I am planning to return next year for independence 2023 and plan to stay two weeks. I felt so much at home and more safe than in the US that I decided that Ghana will be my home in the near future. My plan is to be in Ghana by my 40th birthday which is in 2027. How much would say is a good amount to have saved up between now and 2027? I don’t have any children and a friend of mine who’s there will be a roommate so we will spliting the cost. Of bills, rent, food etc. I don’t have children. Thanks for your advice!

Don't do wire transfers, get a schwab checking account and simply withdraw cash from the ATM, Schwab doesn't charge a foreign ATM fee and they refund you the local bank ATM fee too at the end of each month. Otherwise just use your AMEX gold for purchases where CC's are accepted and carry a back up visa card.

Excellent video, so detailed. It's unfortunate that the shipping options for exporting vehicle is doable, its the import charges on the other end which seems to double that of exporting vehicle. Depending on which vlogger you listen too, getting around is very necessary especially when looking for living arrangements or just exploring the continent. I'm at a stalemate right about now!
@ExpatLifeGhana4 жыл бұрын
You've got that right @Randal Cummins shipping isn't the issue, it's clearing the vehicle on the other end and then having someone who can repair it properly! We shopped NEW cars in Ghana (as they are an option as well) and they come with a maintenance plan. You can purchase a NEW car for $25-30K USD there. And there are some financing options available as well. Think about that too. If you are shipping a used car from the US that you bought for $12-15K (used) and then adding the shipping plus clearing ($7000) you're at $19-22K for a USED car. And you could buy new in GH and resell it if/when you leave as a one owner vehicle. These are all things to consider and we have gone back and forth on this one too. Thanks for commenting ❤️️🇬🇭❤️️!
@babsdabre10564 жыл бұрын
The high duty on importation of vehicles is basically to encourage the buying those sold or produced in the country.

Absolutely @Babs Dabre - And if you can, that is a great option PLUS it means having more options for repair and parts. Great point!

We should have an under ground railroad type system of importing goods. If someone is coming from the states they could bring an item in their luggage and deliver it to whoever in Ghana has requested it. Maybe use Facebook to communicate the need and negotiate a reasonable fee for bringing it and the point of sale should be face to face
