here is all kind of sports, Coffee shops, Restaurants, Malls, camps. the only missing is Bars, Discos, Movie theaters. But, you can do all that in privet with friends. and that's what we are doing.

cherwell Hi Cherwell, locals are friendly with expats and used to work and deal with them for a long time. I know some British and Americans who are working here for many years without any problems. Smoking is not an issue unlike alcohole & drugs tht are illegal. We are not that much different than Oman in term of society. You will love it here. Just try to make good friends and do not hesitate to live your life in Saudi normally. I wish you the best and good luck.

some people think Saudis are Extremely rich. well, Nope. if Saudi nationals are as they say 20 MM Man & wife + kids . then only 1,000 are extremely rich, 5000 rich, 5000 Mid rich, the remaining 19,989,000 are between middle class income, poor, very poor, and unemployed. No whatsoever compensation for the unemployed or the elderly except a few Saudi Riyals ($300). and it is very expensive for the none westerns. 80% rent homes, pay expensive utilities. we'd rather pay taxes to live a better life like in Canada, Germany or USA.

Saudi Arabia is great for making money and saving. Tons of it. Especially tax free. I have seen Americans save there and buy real estate in the US. Living there for 30 or 40 years easily. It's not so great for entertainment especially for a Westerners. Then again you can always drive to nearby countries and have fun there.

We aren't a recruiter but we work with some around the world and only recommend people to them after getting to know them and what they're looking for. I really want to teach in Saudi Arabia but I'm afraid of making a cultural mistake and getting murdered on the street... Like if a Saudi approaches me and asks what my religion is and I say I'm agnostic he might then and there start cursing my name, spitting on me, etc...

The likelihood of a Saudi or anyone else in Saudi for that matter asking you about your religion is extremely low to nonexistent. If you want to teach there, go for it!

Tell them you're Christian or Buddist or whatevers true for your culture. Even people who are atheist in Europe and America live in a culture which is heavily influenced by Christianity, in so many 'non religious' ways that often people don't realise.

I've actually retired from teaching now; I worked mainly in Spain, Thailand and Turkey. I now spend my time writing my memoirs and travelling abroad when money allows. I wish you continued success in your work.

When I worked there we always found Americans most unlikely to adapt to the the Saudi culture, whereas Brits tended to get around the rules...Americans demanded their ''rights'' which of course they had none. Interesting don't you think? Says a lot about our cultures.........

Speaking from Saudi Arabian (living in Jeddah) perspective, tattoos are 100% legal to have, but illegal to get one, no one will look at you weird or look down at you or think of you any less, if you caught some eyes at you, it might be because people are just curious.

What rough times? They have great salaries, lots of perks, live in 'compounds', lots of parties at weekends with home-brewed wines and beers! They also got to meet single foreign women, as well. No shortage of that.Thing is, many Whites think they're so f**king special and want White-Man's Privilege everywhere they go (which usually don't get in these parts of the World)!

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. I lived in Saudi Arabia for 4 years working as a software engineer for the Royal Saudi Air Force. The Saudis are good decent people but some of them are lazy. They use foreign labor to get work done. Some Saudis do work hard but it seems many are slackers. This is good for Americans who work over there. We were well paid and lived on great western style compounds. I never argued with the citizens about their culture or form of government. It's not my business. I was there to do a job and make money. At the time all earnings up to $96K were Federal income tax free. I still paid payroll taxes because I worked for an American company. Here's some advice: If you are filling out information about your religion to get a work visa in Saudi Arabia and you're not Muslim, just say you're Christian. They prefer that to being an atheist or any other religion besides Islam.

I'm not sure how to answer that. Some expats grow beards to fit in, other do it because they've always wanted to and it's acceptable, and then others don't. Does that help?

I had a lot of Saudi teachers who didn't grow their beard, plus so many people don't grow their beard(even though they are physical able to), yes! Having a beard is acceptable and ever so slightly preferable, but that doesn't mean if someone is beardless that he will be treated differently. From my own experience, I don't shave because the weather can get fairly hot(35c-43c) and shaving+ hot weather makes my skin irritate. If you have any questions feel free to ask :)

I was sucked into the idea of living and working in Saudia Arabia , I worked for Saudia Arabian airlines ( Saudia) . Boy where the benefits great , but not worth it in the long run. I got so depressed I had to start taking Prozac. It's a horrible country with horrible people who're horrible to any one who isn't a white foreign and I have witnessed my fair share of women beating in public , but you can't do anything as it allowed in Islam and you will be arrested of you interfere and God forbid you say anything offensive about the country or Islam online or physically. I know live in Dubai and so much happier :) Don't fool yourself …

Through my 23 years living in Saudi, I have NEVER EVER seen a "woman beating in public", I have heard stories about when the husband gets intoxicated by drugs or alcohol and beat his wife, but from my experience these stories are just fairy tales to encourage kids to stay away from drugs and such.

Forget Saudi, go Morocco or something lol- if you just need to save like crazy - fair dooz - or to study Islam, or just love desert picnics and swimming in the Red sea next to dolphins and rainbow fish! Probably don't want to settle there forever- but you never know - culture shock - really? It's all American culture there lol Sadly there IS racism there but isn't there everywhere? AND - if you are SILENT against racism - i.e you are a coward - don't go - you may well witness racism - do something about it - I did when there. Else you will become like that too. Islam is NOT responsible for their racism - it is small-minded tribalism and classism - they need to practice their Islam in this area - NO EXCUSES.
