I don’t understand why the area around the guard isn’t cordoned off. This is a military facility, not a tourist attraction. Why is this bad behavior by hoards of people allowed and tolerated? It mystifies me.

@sandragrissom1821 the pavement outside of Horse Guard's gates is public pavement. Policed by the Metropolitan Police. Inside the yard is a military barracks, Ministry of Defence property policed by the MOD police. The publics are granted access from the parade ground at the back through the courtyard and put through the gate. A horse can stand in the boxes, the back half is on the MOD land, and half of the horse front is on public pavement. It's a complicated situation. The tourists on the public pavement can walk up to the horse with nothing to stop them except the trooper. Hope that makes sense, that's my 4th attempt to get the wording right.

You can't block the horse in. The trooper and horse have to be able to move freely in the event of an emergency or incident, such as the horse getting spooked. Any type of barrier or cordon could cause serious injury to the horse, rider, and/or spectators.

There is a permissive footpath through Stable Yard to th Parade ,behind Horseguards. The public were given the right of access from 7am to 8pm daily.

I saw the Guard’s foot in the stirrups gently push some folks away from himself and his horse when they were too close. Good for him!! He also controlled somewhat who the horse nipped, nuzzled and actually was allowed to bite…love this Guard and his beautiful mount… stay safe, brave soldier… this is war!! 💜🙏❤️🙏

Blame Disney, he copied their uniforms for his stupid actors at his stupid Disneyland and as a result people constantly claim - and if you don't believe read some of the comments on social media - that the guards are simply nothing but actors (with another group claiming they should halve the military and hire actors instead - cheaper apparently - as they obviously don't have any work to do if they can sit around on horses all day). And if they are only actors then they are obviously there purely for the tourists who ought to be allowed to muck about with the horses and pull their reins this way or that way because - being the equivalent to Disney actors - they aren't really dangerous. Sounds nutty but that is how more than a few explain it away. Even better are their comments regarding the Swiss Guard in the Vatican or the Greek ceremonial guards - both are also fully trained soldiers - in Greece.

Hilarious that the guard pulls up the horse when he starts to go in for a nip on the kids. And the horse abides with the correction. But when he's aimed at the adults the guard allows the horse his head (most of the time). I get that we are in the era of the selfie. But do you really need a picture of the horse, guard and your own mug in the same picture? Really wish they could put up some barriers to keep the stupid people away. I would think that keeping people at bay would make the time standing guard would be much less stressful for the horses.
